Mike MacIntyre has been named head coach at CU.

Reports are coming quickly that the Colorado Buffaloes have found their man to take over the head coaching position. San Jose State's Mike MacIntyre will be heading east to Boulder after turning around the Spartans program.

Thus ends our embarrassing search to replace Jon Embree, a bungled exercise that earned national attention and ridicule. MacIntyre is a hire that should be applauded for Colorado. It can easily be argued that MacIntyre is a much better fit for this program and he is certainly a much smaller flight risk than Butch Jones would have been.

We'll have much more on this soon. What does everyone think? Happy that it's all over?

When I got out of Church* this Sunday morning, I learned that the rumors of Dan Mullen coming to Boulder to interview for our head coaching job might be true. Or not.

*read: bed

The Mississippi State blog, 'For Whom The Cowbell Tolls has a very thorough write-up of the rumors that came to a head last night on twitter, their sources, their possible validity, and what the folks in Starkville think.

All of the smoke seems to have come from a statement on the radio here in Denver, essentially claiming that Mullen would be participating in an interview with Colorado

aaaaaand that's it. There hasn't really been any corroboration of the original source information, just other people effectively saying "yes, I saw that tweet. It was a good-lookin' one, too."

The time has come to find out if Jones will be the next head coach of the Buffs.

What should we expect in the Butch Jones soap opera today? An end. Finally, an end to all this nonsense and he said, she said. Jones has understandably taken a lot of flack for his delay in making a decision and it all came to a head last night with separate announcements from both the Denver Post and Cincinnati Enquirer that Jones had agreed to take the position. Shortly thereafter, both University spokesmen and Jones himself denied that such a decision had happened. Buffs fans everywhere went from elated (or at least relieved) to disappointed and frustrated with the entire process.

Colorado has been pursuing Cincinnati football coach Butch Jones almost from the moment it fired Jon Embree 11 days ago. Wednesday afternoon, a source close to the negotiations told The Denver Post that Jones would become the next Buffs' coach, with only final details needing to be worked out.

Jones, meanwhile, told media in Cincinnati late Wednesday after arriving from Charlotte, N.C., that he hadn't yet made a decision and will announce Thursday what he will do.

This whole episode just served to further illuminate the day and age that we are in, where even the newspapers, who used to not even consider running a story without an ironclad source, are racing to get their stories published first. The Enquirer has a great recap of how the events unfolded and took hold of the media in both states and beyond.

While Cincinnati coach Butch Jones was eating dinner at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Charlotte Wednesday night, the Denver Post reported that Jones had accepted the Colorado coaching position. The report quickly spread through the media. Within 20 minutes of the report breaking, Jones was on his phone stating the report was "absolutely false."

One thing we do know, we'll know how this is going to play out and we will know it soon. Contrary to what some unnamed "Twitter personalities" are reporting, I don't think that this deal has fallen apart yet. I still believe that the deal was close enough to be complete that the Post and Enquirer felt that they could run with it and I believe we will find out today. If in fact Jones was that close to becoming the next Colorado coach and the media attention and hubbub did scare him off then good riddance, that's not the kind of guy we need leading this program, but I still hope he ends up in Boulder leading this program back to success.

As the Butch Jones decision stretches longer with no end in sight, it's time to start thinking about the next man up.

We have now reached well over 36 hours since the Colorado Buffaloes presumably offered Cincinnati Head Coach Butch Jones the same position in Boulder. Since then, Jones has participated in a press conference about the Bearcats bowl destination where he refused to even discuss the circumstances. Outside of that single appearance, all we have seen is "sources this" and "sources that" from media types in both Colorado and Ohio but have yet to see any information of substance.

It's obvious that this is a decision that is troubling Jones and his family and that is both good and bad. The fact that no decision has been made makes it clear that he is seriously considering making the move and taking the job. He seems to be a man of integrity who wants to make the right choice and that has to be something respect.

On the other hand, the University of Colorado is stuck in a holding pattern while dominos across the college football landscape begin to fall. Just yesterday, it was announced that Bret Bielema is headed to Arkansas, Gus Malzahn is taking over at Auburn and Steve Addazio is the next man up at Boston College. Today there are rumors of Mike Gundy receiving an offer at Tennessee and Willie Taggart interviewing with both Wisconsin and South Florida. None of those jobs in particular were necessarily direct threats for the Buffs, but the college football coaching community is extremely interconnected and these moves effect everyone.

The other big elephant in the room is the California Golden Bears. While they are being very tight-lipped about the process, it seems that Chris Peterson may be their number one choice, but if he decides to stay in Boise, their next candidates could directly conflict with Colorado's. The Buffaloes will most likely turn to Fresno State Head Coach Tim DeRuyter, who from all reports would be genuinely interested in the position, or San Jose State's Head Coach Mike MacIntyre if Jones stays in Ohio. Both names could also be contacted be California (especially MacIntyre).

Whether he decides to head to Boulder or not, let's hope we hear from Jones soon. It's time to get moving towards the future of this program.

His final choice should come today, but we may not know until this evening.

After spending more than nine hours in Boulder yesterday, Cincinnati Head Coach Butch Jones has narrowed his options down to accepting the offer to coach the Buffaloes or staying in Ohio with a reworked contract. Reports from the Purdue Rivals site say that Purdue is no longer in the mix and has moved on to Kent State Coach Darrell Hazell.

Many assumed that Jones would make his decision before a scheduled 11 a.m. MT press conference to discuss the Bearcats Belk Bowl match-up, but it now appears that he will try and pull the press conference off without addressing the job situation.

I'm glad he is taking his time to make a choice that he will be happy with, but it should be a rather uncomfortable situation for everyone at the press conference.
