Colorado Buffaloes Football: Steven Montez adds to preseason watch list honors

Unitas and Campbell awards are the latest for CU’s quarterback.

Steven Montez picked up preseason watch list honors for both the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose awards on Wednesday. The new honors bring him to a total of four preseason lists after the Colorado Buffaloes quarterback was named to the Walter Camp and Maxwell in July.

Named after the NFL legend, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award has been presented annually since 1987 to the nation’s top college quarterback. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class. Criteria to be considered for the award include character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define NFL Hall of fame running back Earl Campbell. The criteria consists of Integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

What make the Campbell award special to Montez is a nominee must be born in the state of Texas, and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college. Montez, a native of El Paso, TX, attended Del Valle High School where his younger brother, Raymond, is currently entering his senior year.

The 2018 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award will be presented on December 7 at the Embassy Suites Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel & The Grand. The finalists will be brought to Tyler, TX for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 9, 2019.
