Mel Tucker hasn’t made a lot of flashy hires yet, retaining coaches and hiring behind-the-scenes guys for the coordinator positions. His first outside position coach hire, an OL coach (as it should be), is a big name hire that should excite all of Buff nation.
Chris Kapilovic is (reportedly) your new OL coach for the Colorado Buffaloes. Most recently, he was the OC/OL coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels with Larry Fedora. Mack Brown wanted to switch to an Air Raid offense, so he hired Texas Tech’s OL coach, Brandon Jones (on my dream staff list). That left Kapilovic available, and Tucker (again, reportedly) snatched him up.
If I had known Kapilovic was an option, he easily would have been #1 on my list. There are very few more qualified candidates that CU could have grabbed. Kapilovic has coached and recruited at a high level for a long time. He was a P5 OC as recently as last year, and while he wasn’t great, he wasn’t terrible. Here is a list of his all time recruits. Some very solid names on there, and it doesn’t include 1st round pick Jonathan Cooper. Getting him to Boulder, as just an assistant coach, is a huge coup. He is a proven finder and developer of talent, and with the young bucks currently in Boulder, he should be able to mold a respectable group. This also speaks to the new offensive scheme and mindset Mel Tucker appears to have in mind. He want to be bigger, more physical, and power run based. Kapilovic can help deliver that in spades.
