Colorado football hires Kwahn Drake as defensive line coach

The Buffs hired a fast-rising coach on the defensive side of the ball.

Jim Jeffcoat is out of Boulder. The man was a great guy, a good coach, and helped CU rise out of the pure depths into relevance. But it was time for both parties to move on, and move on they did.

So, the Buffs had a DL coach opening. With the 10th assistant spot filled by CB coach Ashley Ambrose, it was the only opening left. MacIntyre’s track record for finding defensive coaching talent is well-recognized. His hires last year (ShaDon Brown, Ross Els, and DJ Eliot at DC) were an overall plus and Brown may be my favorite assistant coach on staff. And now it’s filled by one of my favorite hires that Coach MacIntyre has made in Kwahn Drake.

Drake is young, having started coaching at 2014 at Tulane University on the DL and moved to Memphis in 2016 as an offensive analyst. He moved to Eastern Illinois University just last year as Co-DC and DL coach for the Panthers. At under 30, he is a rising star in the ranks. He is technical, a good recruiter, and fun as hell:

Drake and Ashley Ambrose, both of Coach MacIntyre’s last hires, have strong ties to the New Orleans area. Given CU’s historical success there, it would make sense if the Buffs target that area harder.

Welcome, Kwahn!
