Buffaloes linebacker Derek McCartney out for the season

A torn ACL has knocked out one of Colorado's best defenders.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

One of the best stories of Saturday's 45-28 loss to Michigan was Derek McCartney's touchdown after picking up a Wilton Speight fumble forced by Chidobe Awuzie. The score put the Buffaloes up 14-0 and had the Buffaloes fans who had made the trip in a state of euphoria. Making the touchdown even more special was his grandfather Bill McCartney's attendance at the game as Colorado's honorary captain (opposite Tom Brady).

McCartney learned after the game that he won't have the opportunity this season to make an even better play as a torn ACL will knock him out for the rest of the year. Based on the amount of playing time he's had this season he should be able to apply for, and receive, a medical redshirt.

It's awful news for McCartney and trouble for a rapidly improving Buffaloes defense. N.J. Falo, fresh off of a three-game suspension, will look to fill the void at linebacker.

Get well, Derek!
