Tonight: 30 for 30 - The Gospel According to Mac

Tune into ESPN tonight at 7:00 p.m. MT.

Tonight the Colorado Buffaloes and former coach Bill McCartney are the focus of the newest ESPN 30 for 30 documentary at 7:00 p.m. MT. National attention on the Buffaloes football program hasn't come very often lately and it remains to be seen whether this film will be taken more positively or negatively. Either way it's a must watch for Buffs fans.

Here's the film's official synopsis.

Football is a religion to many people. But few know the depths of both faiths as well as Bill McCartney, the former football coach at Colorado and the founder of Promise Keepers, a Christian men's ministry. "The Gospel According to Mac" tells the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction story of Coach Mac's controversial national championship run, and the two seasons that followed with multiple arrests and strife between his mostly African-American players and the Boulder police. McCartney's own daughter became pregnant by the team's quarterback before seeing that same quarterback struck by cancer. The saga culminated in consecutive Orange Bowl matchups against Notre Dame. Bill McCartney's passionate and often polarizing beliefs have made him many enemies and many admirers, but it's difficult to deny that he embodies the essential issues facing football in America to this day.

While you're waiting for it to start here are two good additional takes on the story.

Former Buffs QB Charles Johnson talks Coach Mac "30 for 30" | Mile High Sports

Sadly for Johnson, he’s not sure that the message "remember how great things were" is enough to resonate with today’s audiences. He does, however, think the documentary can play one very important role in helping bring CU back to prominence.

Director of CU Buffs 30 for 30: ‘I think the average person will be rooting for Colorado’

Jim Podhoretz, the director of ESPN’s 30 for 30 film The Gospel According To Mac, joined BSN Denver’s Jake Shapiro and Golden Buffalo Student Media’s Andrew Haubner on Radio 1190. The documentary tells the story of legendary Colorado Head Coach Bill McCartney, and the program from 1982 until 1994.
