Last Chance U LB commits to Colorado Buffaloes

The versatile linebacker will have 3 to play 2

Mel Tucker is very obviously not happy with the beef on the defense. Other than JuCo DL Jeremiah Doss and Janaz Jordan, Tucker and DL coach Jimmy Brumbaugh also added Janta’vious Jonhson from Auburn as a grad transfer and are still pursuing depth along the front line. Ross Els and Tucker have already grabbed two junior college linebackers as well in Quinn Perry and Jashua Allen. Now, Mel Tucker added a pass rusher that should play right away in Jamar Montgomery.

Montgomery will be signing in February, but he has to finish up some credits at the now infamous Independence Community College. He will be transferring in May and has two years of eligibility left. Jamar measured in at a solid 6’1.5 and 235 pounds on his official visit to the University of Colorado (h/t Adam Munsterteiger of 247 Sports) and has offers from New Mexico and Utah State, with Oregon sniffing around.

Montgomery is a late find for Tucker that appears to have his recruiting dampened by the need for an extra semester at ICC. The LB, who will surely make an appearance on the next season of Last Chance U, has played everywhere in the front seven before settling at OLB. His tape shows a solid player all-around. He uses his hands, fills his gaps, and sticks to his assignments. Montgomery has easy athleticism and is a fluid athlete in space. Going off of Mel Tucker’s previous stops at Georgia and Alabama, Montgomery is a flexible piece that Tucker can stick on the edge to watch for read option plays and also cover tight ends. Regardless, it’s clear that the front seven will be physically different in 2019.

Welcome, Jamar!
