When Mel Tucker said that he wanted to recruit “massive” linemen in a conference call with the season ticket holders, there is some concern that current linemen, who were instructed to stay right around 300 or under by the former staff, wouldn’t fit that vision (I would bet that Drew Wilson can add some weight). There is no doubt that Austin Johnson fits in the new, destructive version of the Colorado Buffaloes.
Austin Johnson, the 6’4, 280 pound guard from Highlands Ranch High School, is a mauler. He is one of two in-state guards that the Buffs are signing, the other being Jake Wiley. Johnson, or Big Salsa as he will be known from now on, prefers to steamroll the helpless linemen line up across from him. Big Salsa finishes his blocks with the violence that creates doubts in the back of his opponents’ head. He moves well and will need to add a little weight in college, but his violent punch and long arms ensure success moving forward.
