Buffaloes Push Bruins to the Brink, Fall in Another 2OT Heartbreaker

Colorado gave UCLA everything they had but couldn't seal the deal on homecoming Saturday.

The Colorado Buffaloes overcame a 17-0 deficit in the first quarter to send Brett Hundley and UCLA to extra time but couldn't overcome the one time Heisman contender as they fell 40-37 in double overtime.

The game started out with a very similar script to the previous week's blowout to USC with an opening drive three and out for the Buffaloes and a 92-yard touchdown run by UCLA running back Paul Perkins after an opening play offensive holding. Three more offensive drives that went no where for Colorado later and the Buffs were already down 17-0 a little bit more than half way through the first quarter. The Bruin offense seemed to be having it's way with the Colorado defense in the opening quarter and it looked like we were going to be in for another long day in Boulder.

In the second quarter the defense tightened up, aided by some poor Brett Hundley passes, and the Buffaloes were able to get the ground game going behind a nice combination of Tony Jones, Phillip Lindsay and Michael Adkins. After an Adkins touchdown run with 3:02 to go in the first half made it 24-14 the Buffaloes were able to get the ball right back thanks to a great strip sack from Derek McCartney. The half ended in disaster after Sefo and the offense thought that D.D. Goodson had stepped out of bounds but the officials ruled forward progress and the Buffs were unable to adjust while the clock ran out due to a false start from the four-yard line.

The defense continued their stellar play in the second half, holding the Bruins to just a single touchdown, while the offense was able to get in gear with two touchdown passes to Bryce Bobo. After holding UCLA time after time in the fourth quarter Sefo threw what seemed to be a killer interception, missing a wide open Shay Fields at midfield, the defense held serve to give Colorado one more opportunity to tie the game and they didn't disappoint.

In overtime the Buffaloes and Bruins traded field goals but Colorado couldn't punch it in in overtime number two while the Bruins were able to get in the end zone with two Brett Hundley runs.

Sefo Liufau finished with 27 completions for 246 yards and two touchdowns while the Buffaloes finished with 233 yards on the ground. Brett Hundley finished with 200 yards passing and 110 yards on the ground to go with his two touchdowns.

In the end it's another Buffaloes loss where they showed a ton of improvement but still didn't end up with a W in the win column. Colorado has looked like a significantly improved team in every game this season except for USC but they're still looking to get over that proverbial hump.
