2023 NBA Draft: Colorado Buffaloes G Ethan Wright goes undrafted

The Buffs did not have anyone selected in this year’s draft.

All 58 picks of the NBA have come and gone, but Colorado Buffaloes guard Ethan Wright was not among the players selected.

Wright was a star at Princeton before heading over to Colorado, averaging around 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists per game his junior year. Sadly, the Ivy League didn’t play during the 2020-21 season and he had to move on right before his old team made an improbably Sweet Sixteen run in this year’s tournament.

Wright chose Boulder but initially had a hard time fitting into the Colorado roster. He struggled in the minutes he played, sporadic they were, and looked like a player who had been tasked with doing a lot of things at Princeton, but couldn’t get into a rhythm once he was asked to just spot-up.

Thanks to a slew of injuries, he got the chance to shine. With his crafty ball handling, smart drives and passes, and yes, accurate three-point shooting, he was suddenly the glue holding together the depleted Buffs in the NIT. It was a tremendous finish to his final year of college ball that made us wish we had more of him, especially now that the Buffs need someone with his shooting, on-ball ability and veteran presence.

NBA teams usually love this kind of late-bloomer. Not too long ago we had Derrick White and George King get drafted as fifth-year seniors. Even this draft had it’s fair share of college vets drafted from Jaime Jaquez to Andre Jackson to Jalen Wilson. Wright doesn’t quite have the athleticism, the length or the overall skill as those guys, but he’s a good basketball player who we didn’t appreciate enough in Boulder.

There’s a chance Wright takes his talents overseas. I could easily see him contributing right away for a club like Amager BK. But it’s more likely he’s one of the many athletes who goes professional in something other than sports. He’s a Colorado grad, after all, and has already begun to spread his entrepreneurial wings.
