Two days after linebacker Nate Landman was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, another Colorado Buffaloes player received preseason recognition.
Junior running back Alex Fontenot was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list Wednesday, presented annually to the nation’s top running back. A native of Richmond, Texas, Fontenot is coming off an 11-game sophomore campaign that saw him rush for 874 yards (seventh in the Pac-12) and five touchdowns, three of which came in the season-opener against rival Colorado State.
He’s the first Buffaloes tailback on the watch list since Phillip Lindsay in 2016 and ’17. Rashaan Salaam is the only Buffaloes player to win the Doak Walker Award, capturing it, in addition to the Walter Camp Award and Heisman Trophy following his historic 1994 season.
Fontenot, along with sophomore Jaren Mangham (441 rush yards, 3 touchdowns in 2019) will anchor a deep Buffaloes backfield this fall. Both running backs were recently named to 247Sports.com’s Top 10 returning Pac-12 running backs list for the 2020 season.
