Way to finish the class up with a bang, Mel Tucker. After holding on to him throughout the late signing day period, fending off all sorts of schools, the Colorado Buffaloes have officially added the crown jewel to the 2020 recruiting class. His name is Ashaad Clayton and he is an absolute star.
What can I say about Clayton that most Buff fans don’t already know? Let’s start with the headline on his resume. Ashaad is the best running back in Louisiana this year, which usually means that he is headed to LSU. Due to an injury delaying his recruitment and LSU’s newfound national prominence, it didn’t end up that way, to everyone’s benefit. Clayton plays for Warren Easton High School in New Orleans, a traditional powerhouse that has produced a lot of D1 talent for a long time. Near the end, the battle was between the Buffaloes and the Florida Gators for Clayton’s talents, but his long list of suitors also included Kansas, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, and plenty more.
Here’s what I wrote down when he committed:
I would offer him, too. The man just ruins defenders. He is big, physical, and aggressive. He gets upfield in a hurry and then gets fast. In the open field, he is a menace. Ashaad is just a solid all-around back, and once he gets free, he is taking it to the house. Just a great pickup and my favorite of this class. He will play soon.
All of that is true today. Except he also just had the playoff run of the century afterwords. Double-digit touchdowns, triple-digit yards everyday, Clayton outproduced a lot of running backs’ seasons in four games. In the end, he will bring his brute force style of running to Boulder.
