Chip wins Mascot National Championship

It’s the third title for Colorado’s beloved mascot

While Colorado fans eagerly await the newest edition to the Ralphie family, another Buffaloes mascot was turning heads in Orlando, Florida this weekend. CU’s beloved mascot Chip The Buffalo won the Division IA Mascot National Championship at the 2020 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships Saturday afternoon.

It was Chip’s first title since 2010 and his third overall. His score of 88.28 points out of a possible 100 was more than a point ahead of the runner-up finisher, Auburn’s “Aubie the Tiger” (87.22). Washington’s “Harry the Husky” (83.12) and Penn State’s “Nittany Lion” (81.32) rounded out the top four finishers. Thanks to a pre-event video submission, which accounted for 50 percent each mascot’s points, Chip was ranked 2nd heading into Saturday’s competition. The other half of his points were earned during a 90-second skit to music in which he was judged on the following criteria: Crowd appeal/interaction, creativity, animation/enthusiasm, prop usage and overall impression.

From all of us at, congrats Chip on winning another Natty! Now get that well deserved rest.
