Buffaloes NT Javier Edwards signs with Houstin Texans as undrafted free agent

Edwards goes to his hometown Texans.

There were rumors Javier Edwards would be drafted in the 7th round, but perhaps fortunately, that didn’t happen. As first reported by Ralphie Report’s Jeff Hauser, Edwards signed as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans.

Edwards is a Houston native and the opportunity to play in his hometown near his family is a dream come true. Before playing at Colorado, where he made a huge difference as a run stopper and team comedian, he was a mountain with legs at Blinn College just outside Houston. It’s always great to see a CU player get drafted, but in cases like Edwards, it’s often a better opportunity for players to sign with their preferred team instead of having a team decide for them via the draft.

Houston plays in a 3-4 defensive scheme with Brandon Dunn at nose tackle. Dunn is solid as a run stuffing space eater, but Houston’s depth on the defensive line is shaky behind him and J.J. Watt. They could have drafted more interior lineman, but they only drafted Charles Omenihu, a 3-4 defensive end from Texas. That means that Edwards could have an inside track to seeing time as 3-4 nose tackle as soon as this year. If that happens, Big Sexy deserves all the hometown love he can get.

Congrats, Javier!
