AP Top 25: Colorado Buffaloes ranked 23rd

The Buffs are on the rise.

NCAA Basketball: Pac-12 Conference Tournament-California vs Colorado Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Buffaloes started the season just outside the Top 25, but they moved to #25 a season-opening win over Arizona State. Now after beating San Diego on Saturday night, the Buffs have risen to #23 in the polls.

The Buffs didn’t do much to move up, but they rose because of other team’s shortcomings. Florida (ranked 15th last week) lost to UConn, Saint Mary’s (18) lost to Winthrop, Washington (20) lost to Tennessee and LSU (23) lost to VCU. The irony here, however, is that Tennessee and VCU both pulled off a Top 25 upset, rose into the Top 25 and vaulted past CU.

Washington fell to 25th, so the Pac-12 continues to have four teams ranked. In addition to the Buffs and Huskies, Oregon is ranked 11th and Arizona is 14th. I would argue Arizona is only that high because of recruiting hype and program recognition, but CU will prove themselves soon enough.

The full Top 25 goes as follows:

  1. Duke Blue Devils (2nd last week)
  2. Louisville Cardinals (4)
  3. Michigan State Spartans (3)
  4. Kansas Jayhawks (5)
