Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Steven Montez was named to the Walter Camp Award preseason watch list, per an announcement by the Walter Camp Foundation on Friday.

Fifty players made the watch list for award the best overall player in college football to start the 2018 season. There are 38 offensive and 12 defensive players on the list — five of them are from the Pac-12 with Washington QB Jake Browning, Husky RB Myles Gaskin, Stanford RB Bryce Love, Arizona QB Khalil Tate, and Montez.

This is the second appearance for Montez on a preseason watch list, the other being the Maxwell Award that recognizes the nation’s best quarterback. Montez accounted for 3,324 yards of total offense along with 22 total touchdowns to nine interceptions last season. He set CU’s record for the most games with over 400 yards of total offense in a season with three.

Colorado’s only winner of the Walter Camp Award was running back Rashaan Salaam during his illustrious season in 1994. In 2002, Chris Brown was one of 10 semifinalists for the award that was given to Penn State’s Larry Johnson.

The 2018 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 129 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 6. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s 52nd annual national awards banquet on Jan. 12, 2019 in New Haven, Conn.
