Gameday Buff Bites Round 2 - Colorado Buffaloes vs. Kansas Jayhawks

Buff Bites round one was posted earlier this morning here

Colorado_mediumWoelk: Buff assistants must be given rein to do job - Boulder Daily Camera

Neill Woelk wants Dan Hawkins to let his assistants coach and give them free rein with this team. This clearly stems from the quarterback situation when offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau said that Tyler Hansen would be the team's starter for the rest of the season and Hawkins said you will probably see both quarterbacks.

I bring this up today only because current CU coach Dan Hawkins appears to have reacheda similar juncture. He has recruited well. He has assembled a staff of assistants he insists are well qualified to do their jobs. Now it's time to let them coach. It's time for offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Eric Kiesau to decide who will play quarterback -- and stay at quarterback. It's time for defensive specialists Ron Collins and Greg Brown to determine how the defense will play -- and keep it that way. And it's time for Hawk to trust his judgment.

I have seen most score predictions thinking this will be a close game, Patrick Ridgell on the other hand thinks Kansas in a blow out:

Key matchup: CU secondary vs. Kansas receivers. It’ll help if Reesing doesn’t have too long to scramble. Prediction: Remember, this is Hansen’s third career start. The Buffs didn’t do well in the other two, and Kansas is a good, veteran team. Kansas 35, CU 10

Colorado_mediumHansen ready to stake his claim as Buffs' top QB - Boulder Daily Camera

Hawkins said he doesn`t want Hansen to feel like he has a hook hinging over his shoulder, and he will be patient through mistakes the young signal-caller might make, just as he was with his son as the Buffs started 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Whether the coach is able to stick to that statement will be one of the great interests today. To his credit, Hansen said it is up to him to make his coaches believe in him by executing at a high level and leading the offense to points.

Neill Woelk having a little fun at the expense of Dan Hawkins...

Jeff Bzdelik did not vow to win 20 games this season. Jeff Bzdelik's son will not be playing point guard for the Buffs. So far, so good. Unnecessary melodrama has been avoided.
