New Uniforms

I do not know how I missed this, but Adam Munsterteiger's Twitter page background looks like a concept of new uniforms? I did some research and found, well nothing new. Has anyone seen or at least heard rumors of new uniforms?

It would be cool if silver could be integrated a bit more. I do love the current jerseys and am a fan of the "traditional" look, but with the current recruiting landscape, multiple uniforms may bring in some recruits.

Buffs Round Out the Coaching Staff, Hire Special Teams Coordinator

So, I thought this was official a while ago and it was just that no one cared, but I guess not. At any rate, here is the final piece of our coaching staff, special teams coordinator Toby Neinas. Now, if that name sounds familiar, then this hire probably gives you the squicks the same way it does me. You see, Toby Neinas is the son of Chuck Neinas, described in the article as a "longtime football power broker." I guess that's one way to describe him. To me, he's more like one of those "political consultants" that seem to pop up every couple of years on a campaign regardless of how many giant failures he's been involved with in the past. Seriously- why anyone gives a damn what Lanny Davis* has to say about anything, ever, is completely lost on me.

Now maybe this is all a big coincidence. Maybe MacIntyre interviewed him and thought he was the best man for the job (regardless of the spotty resume). The bottom line is, Chuck Neinas was responsible for Mike Bohn's hire at San Diego State (where Toby Neinas was then hired as a coach!). Chuck Neinas was responsible for Mike Bohn's hire at CU. Chuck Neinas was responsible for Dan Hawkins' hire at CU. Hell- Chuck Neinas was responsible for Mike Bohn's hire at the College Football Association. Chuck's job is basically doing what should be the responsibility of an athletic director, except Chuck gets large 5 figure "consulting" fees for a few weeks' work. So forgive me if I'm a little cynical.

Good Piece On the New CU Women's Lacrosse Coaches

As many know, I'm a huge lacrosse fan, so this is nice for me. Now it can be nice for you. One interesting note that I've speculated on, but now it's sort of close to official:

The Buffs will join the four other Pac-12 women's lacrosse programs (Southern Cal, Stanford, Oregon and California) in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, which also includes the University of Denver. The Pac-12 will sanction women's lacrosse once a sixth team is added

This is really nice. I've also mentioned that this is why we won't be adding a men's program (or hockey) any time soon. I'm sure Larry Scott would seriously frown upon adding a program that isn't sanctioned by the Pac 12 while we lack swinning and diving, water polo, men's volleyball... oh yeah- and baseball. More Pac 12 sports= more content for the Pac 12 Network without paying for additional rights fees. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Network buy some MPSF games in anticipation of being a full Pac 12 sport (in fact, I would be surprised if they didn't. Of course, I still won't be able to watch them. Thanks, DirecTV.

Colorado Men's Lacrosse Ranked Fourth

Speaking of lacrosse, your Red Hot Buffs are ranked #4 in the most recent MCLA poll coming off of wins against Boise State and Oregon this weekend. Unfortunately, Colorado State is ranked #1. CSU also won the national championship last year.

I Hate Those Stupid Big Heads

Let's just get this out of the way right now- I am a crotchety old man. This likely comes as no surprise. I have been a crotchety old man for quite some time, even before I was old. I don't like holidays at all, I think widely practiced ceremonial nonsense like brides and grooms shoving cake in each others' faces is stupid (and a waste of perfectly good cake!), and I've never seen a costumed mascot who I didn't want to punch. And yes- I hate those stupid big head pictures that college students love so very much.

George Dohrmann wrote a really strong piece for Sports Illustrated about the rise of the big heads, but one particular quote struck me:

"The way it is now, it is more something people hold up to get on TV," Mongan says. "Like whatever broadcaster is calling the game, you hold up his head and the camera goes to you. Or, if your player scores, you hold up his head ... It is a little flattering that so many people copied us, but the true root of it now is different. I didn't see that happening."

This is precisely why I hate the damn things. This extends beyond the heads onto people who paint their faces, people who hold up signs, people who dress up in costumes... all of the things that serve little purpose other than drawing attention away from the game and onto any individual clown who can spell out a clever phrase using an E, an S, a P, and an N.

Obviously I'm not really the core demographic for these kinds of shenanigans. I'm not really a "constantly standing and screaming and chanting" type of fan. I'm more of a "sit nervously worrying and watching intently and then cheering when something awesome happens" type of fan. A student section full of me's would not be in the running for anyone's best student section (but it would always be full!). I'm a curmudgeon, I get that. But what if student-me is sitting behind a sign waving dude in a green man suit and a cape? Ugh. I first noticed the phenomenon when watching pro wrestling, when roughly half of the crowd had some dumb sign and the other half couldn't see a goddamn thing.

So in closing, the Big Heads have jumped the shark. They are not for distracting shooters any more. So let us dispense with such childish things, and retire the Big Heads. Now let's all flame me... in the comments!

CU Announces $170 Million Facilities Upgrade

DiStefano, Athletic Director Mike Bohn and new head football coach Mike MacIntyre unveiled a $170 million, multi-year proposal to upgrade CU-Boulder’s football facilities before the Intercollegiate Athletics subcommittee of the CU Board of Regents at the board’s monthly meeting here Wednesday in Colorado Springs.

The first element will consist of a new academic center that will boost student-athletes’ already substantial progress in the classroom. The new facility will provide focus for student-athletes by moving study areas to a new complex beneath the east stands, away from the distractions of the Dal Ward Athletic Center. Additionally, as part of the project’s first element, the north side of Folsom Field’s east stands will be supported against the shifting ground beneath it, improving safety for fans and visitors.

The second element will significantly expand Dal Ward to consolidate football operations, bring coaches and student-athletes from a number of sports together, and provide more physical resources for all in one unified space.

The third element of the plan establishes a permanent indoor practice facility adjacent to outdoor practice fields north of Boulder Creek, creating a year-round practice complex, easing traffic congestion off of Arapahoe Avenue with new streets and transportation enhancements, and forming a new plaza-like entrance to campus from the north.

The final element of the football athletics redevelopment project includes redevelopment of the Folsom Field west-side stands.

Breaking Down The Mills Shake Video

By now you've all seen The Mills Shake video. If not, then go click that clicky I just posted (ed note: embedded below - JW). Seriously, don't be a jerk, we'll wait...

...Okay, now that that's out of the way, let's start off with what this isn't. It absolutely isn't the Harlem Shake. Nor are any of these videos, really. There actually is a dance called the Harlem Shake, but that's been replaced with "bounce around flailing like an asshole. The Harlem Shake has been replaced with the Jordan Loveridge. That said, ours is a pretty good version of that, so let's look at what it is:

0:06-0:19: Ben Mills is... I actually have no idea what he's doing. just kind of bouncing around. At first I thought of Jar Jar Binks, but Jar Jar is much looser. Mills looks more like a mannequin who's in the midst of being brought to life by virtue of electroshocks. And Josh Scott tries (and fails) to not laugh.

0:20-0:23: The first thing you'll notice (in the lower right of the screen) is that Eli Stalzer is obviously the best dancer on the team, as well he should be as a music major. Pretty much everyone else seems to be starting an emo mosh pit (let's pretend to hit each other but not actually touch).

0:24-0:27: This is where Stalzer's shirt comes off, and he pegs Beau Gamble in the head with it. Eli is our Dennis Reynolds, our Magic Mike. He's never met a shirt he didn't want to pop off. Let's call him Electric Eli...actually, let's never ever call him that.

0:28-0:29: This is all about Andre Roberson dressed as a ...cupcake? I think it's a cupcake. This might seem odd from the normally mild mannered and quiet Roberson, until you remember his awesome penguin hat. Also of note: Chip is the only one who gets close to performing the actual Harlem Shake.

Pac-12 Punchability Scale

So during the game against Oregon, I posed a hypothetical question:

EJ Singler- punchable? or MOST punchable?

This is not the first time I have wondered this question. It actually flashes through my head during pretty much every game, which says nothing positive about me to be sure. So now that we've run through one full cycle of the Pac 12 schedule, let's examine that. Who is the most punchable person on each team, and what is the conference hierarchy of punchability? The most punchable person on any team is usually an annoying white guy with a douchey haircut who starts inexplicably dropping buckets from all over. Therefore I invented the Heslip Punchability Scale, which is arbitrarily awarded by me. So from worst to first...

12: Sabatino Chen, Colorado G

Sabatino isn't very punchable. From his glorious hair to his adorable nicknames (Super NinChendo Sega Chenesis, ChenSanity). Also he's from Colorado, so he's by definition the least punchable on the list. He's not white, but according to the paint chips I picked up at Home Depot, he's pretty deep on the Whiteness scale. Why would other teams find him punchable? Well, he's annoying as hell, what with the constant energy and back cuts and defense, which he plays pretty well despite being a middling athlete. He's kind of like a caputchin slapping you in the face. He also can drop some shots- ask Arizona (but not the refs in the Arizona game). 2 Heslips

11: Ahmad Starks, Oregon State G

It's hard to find a punchable player from Oregon State, mostly because they suck and it's hard to want to punch them when you just want to point and laugh. But they've got a lot of talent, so for that most Beavers fans would probably pick coach Craig Robinson as most punchable. Ahmad Starks isn't very punchable. He's pretty little, so it's kind of like wanting to punch Willow, or Honey Boo Boo (wait... nvm). That said, this. THERE'S YOUR PUNCHABILITY. 4 Heslips

10: Eric Wise, USC G

Eric Wise isn't particularly punchable, but he did do most of the work against CU, so I guess that counts. Also, USC as a whole is pretty punchable. They have a gorgeous building half full (at best) of people who are waiting to go 7-6 in football so they can puff their chests and stab stupid swords into the ground. Wise also decided that the school at which he starred wasn't good enough (UC-Irvine) so he abandoned them to move up into the real of the very definition of the nouveau riche. 8 Heslips

9: Brock Motum, Washington State F

This is another team that just isn't very punchable because they're just so sad. But Motum is punchable because he's a great player but also looks like Alfred E. Neuman, If you're getting destroyed by the guy saying "what, me worry?" then yeah, that's a face I'd love to punch. 11 Heslips

8 Aziz N'Diaye, Washington C

N'Diaye would be much more punchable if he wasn't so large. Mostly, he's a Voltron of elbows and knives and socks full of ball bearings who can't score particularly well. He's just a physically incoherent and uncomfortable monster who leaves everyone in his wake injured and uglier. The only way to punch him would be to get some form of basketball Iron Man Suit (Mark IX suit or better, preferably) and hope for the best. 15 Heslips

7: David Kravish, Cal F

Kravish isn't particularly punchable. He's not very good at offense (0-7 vs. Pepperdine), but will occasionally grab a BUNCH of rebounds, all while having the face of a guy pinching a loaf and alternatively letting it go. 17 Heslips

6: Kaleb Tarczewski, Arizona F

I hate Kaleb Tarczewski. Mostly because I can't spell his name so I just call him Eye Chart. It ruins being a part of a message board during games. He's wasn't particularly good in the pretend win against Colorado, but I still hate him. 23 Heslips

5: Aaron Bright, Stanford G

Aaron Bright is like a miniature version on Aaron Craft. Except he isn't good at anything and just kind of exists on defense. He isn't even a good 3 point shooter. So he just... um.. is there. Acting annoying as hell like a mosquito who buzzes around ruining your picnic and then lands in your ear and calls you racist for 2 hours... um, I'm not quite sure what that means. Someone needs to kick him in the shin. Barring that- 30 Heslips

4: Jordan Bachynski, Arizona State, C

I easily could've gone with Carrick Felix here, but Jordan Bachsksdgegry wins on the basis of his eye chart potential, his overwhelming slow whiteness, and the fact that he destroyed us in the paint. A 16-7-9 (blocks) line will make you punchable regardless. 45 Heslips

3: Travis Wear, Ucla F

Let's just start this off by saying that there was a joke circulating among Mater Dei parents when the twins transferred from UNC that the reason they left is because their dad wasn't allowed to be an assistant coach. So there's that, among sympathetic fans. And Mater Dei is not sympathetic. Add to that, he can't really really jump, or move around without looking like he has a hernia. And still, man can he get off. He gets rebounds the same way that Chubbs did in Teen Wolf- by standing flat footed and bearhugging the ball when it falls to him. Travis Wear is Chubbs (god- Michael J Fox was so very punchable in that if you're a Dragons fan). And he seems to thrive in killing the Buffaloes offensively- see 23 points this year on the same 15 foot jumper, and 14 on 6-10 shooting last year. Plus he's pretty slow so you could probably run away pretty easily. 60 Heslips

2: EJ Singler, Oregon F

Oregon is basically a team full of punchable players, by virtue of the fact that they play for Oregon in the absurd Matthew Knight Arena on a court that looks like a toilet half an hour after a 3 AM Taco Bell run (pun intended). He's slow, he's white, he can get hot on offense despite not being particularly good at anything, his brother played for Duke (scientifically proven to be the most punchable program in the history of college basketball) and oh yeah, this.Is there anyone you more want to punch in the conference? No, no there is not. (or is there?) And by this virtue, he is awarded 85 Heslips

1: Jason Washburn, Utah C

Seriously- who the hell is Jason Washburn? He's just a big dumb lumbering idiot who screams and flails around about everything no matter how innocuous, like he's trying to be the Pac 12's Marshall Henderson. Loveridge is basically an anthropomorphised version of Skip Bayless's peronality. But good lord did his 13-11 kill us. That makes him so very very punchable. I considered Dallin Bachysnki, for eye chart factors, but no- I want to punch Jason Washburn so very badly. 90 Heslips

(update: as mbomar04, who was one of the 4 CU fans at the Utah game points out, "Washburn is the most punchable. Stood in front of CU fans and kept saying 'our house.'" So there's definitely a strong case to be made here)

UPDATE: I've refreshed the Heslip scale, like all great statisticians like me and Nate Silver do. As such, Jason Washburn is now the most punchable player in the Pac 12. Congratulations! DICK

CU and Nebraska to Renew Football Rivalry

The Buffaloes and Huskers will reunite for a four-game series from 2018 through 2024, with the first meeting in Lincoln on Sept. 8, 2018; CU will host the following year (Sept. 7, 2019). Then after a three-year break, Colorado will play host to the Huskers on Sept. 9, 2023, with Nebraska the home team the next year (Sept. 7, 2024).

This is great News!

Phil's Bites!

This is my version of Buff Bites. Since I'm not Ash, I decided to get super creative with the title. My other option was Buff Phil, and that's just stupid. Anyway- here are some things.

CU At The Game has some really great interviews with players and parents about the recruiting process. The latest is with Shane Dillon. Shane comes off as really level headed and confident, and seems to enjoy being a part of CU as a whole, not just for football. Although that might seem obvious based on where we are as a football program, it still makes me happy. When I read about things like fancy player lounges with roof top decks and pool tables et cetera (Oregon), it kind of makes me cringe. College is great, and being a part of a community like Boulder is great. We shouldn't need or want to put our athletes in a bubble and not have them enjoy everything that Boulder has to offer. 2 other comments caught my eye, whether important or not:

That strikes hard, because Embree did that a LOT. "Player X will be great in three years... blah blah blah." Whatever, go read all of the interviews, they're fantastic, and you're a jerk if you don't.

Anthony Perkins: Secondary Coach, Indiana State Sycamores

Good News! After spending the year as a technical intern last year with the Buffs, Perkins has already found himself a coaching gig. He will be the "Assistant Coach, Defensive Secondary" for the Indiana State Sycamores for the upcoming season. It's great to see another Buff making and impact elsewhere and maybe one day we might see him roaming the sidelines of Folsom as a secondary coach.

Buffs Football Schedule Released

My thoughts on the schedule:

-I hate starting our year with the csu game. In fact, I hate playing that game in general. It's a lose-lose for us, and a win-win for them. At least the rams won't have any idea what we will look like this year, much like we didn't against them last year.

-2 bye weeks is nice. That should be helpful considering we're still going to be super young.

-Every game is a Saturday, even the season-ender @Utah. Hopefully that will help us get in a rhythm with the schedule.

My thoughts on the schedule:

-2 bye weeks is nice. That should be helpful considering we're still going to be super young.

-Every game is a Saturday, even the season-ender @Utah. Hopefully that will help us get in a rhythm with the schedule.

-I see 1, maybe 2 wins if we are the same team that we were last year. Mac's got his work cut out for him. Good luck Coach MacIntyre and the Buffs!

Or even the former roommate of anybody's father's brother's nephew's cousin but the quiet surrounding the football program is deafening. Are there are rumors at all floating about? I want something to get excited about with regards to football. I realize that even if Coach Mac does eventually deliver the first year will probably feel like the last 7 (oh the horror). I'm in need of some positivity regarding the program. Somebody throw us a bone please.

Senior Banquet

We're coming off a terrible season, and all of these guys have experienced disappointing careers, win-wise, but they've worked their asses off for our program, and deserve our respect and gratitude.

Doug Rippy- 5th year senior. Doug was responsible for us recruiting Rodney Stewart. He's suffered through an injury plagued career, but was excellent last year before he got hurt. He never seemed fully recovered from that injury.

Ray Polk- 5th year senior. Ray came in as a 4 star recruit in the same class that yielded Darrell Scott as a 5 star recruit. Made the decision on his own to redshirt and switch to defense. He also had an injury plagued career and fought to play through many of them. He was also a truly sober voice through all of the turmoil he faced.

Ryan Dannewitz- 5th year senior. Ryan was an offensive line stalwart, consistently the first guy off the bench at both tackle spots and right guard. He was in place to join the staff as either a graduate assistant or intern next year.

Will Pericak- 5th year senior. Will came to CU from Boulder High as a TE/ LB, but started 4 years as a defensive tackle. Made some, um, questionable decisions in his personal life (who hasn't in college?), but represented the Buffs well in he classroom and on the field.

Dustin Ebner- 5th year senior. Dustin worked his way up from a walk on to earn a scholarship and was productive when called upon.

Eric Richter- 5th year senior. Eric was a JC transfer that yo-yoed between the offensive and defensive lines. The strongest man in our program, he provided valuable depth this year on the offensive line.

Jon Major- 5th year senior. Jon suffered through an injury plagued career and never fulfilled his promise. But he was consistent and did everything his coaches asked of him, while also doing a great job of being a leader for his younger teammates.

Nick Kasa- senior. Nick came to Colorado as a top ranked recruit, but struggled through injuries and never fulfilled his promise as a defensive end. He eventually found his role as a tight end and showed a lot of promise by the end of his tenure.

These guys all did their best for the program, and deserve all the respect in the world. I neglected their NFL potential for a reason- it doesn't matter. Because these guys are world class Buffs, regardless of the coach. I am extremely grateful for their contributions, and I thank them for that.

Fall guy

Speculating, but if this coaching search continues to not go well, and if it looks like we are going to have to settle for a coach with no more to recommend him than the guy we just fired, CU is going to need a fall guy, and that means Bohn. It doesn't matter what successes he has had to date - mixed record at any rate - he's the only one out there who's firing would mend a lot of fences. He's toxic. I can't think of any more serious reason for a coach NOT to come to Colorado than the fact that Bohn gave Embree less than two years to turn around a program that was already on it's last leg. Sure Embree is getting a buyout, but this is a stain on his record. And the next coach that would come in and get fired in two years would get an even nicer buyout, but would still have a stain on his record. If CU throws Bohn to the wolves, everyone can blame him for the mess, wipe the slate clean, 'rehabilitate' the Mac crowd, and tell the next coach - with credibility - that he will have more than 2 years to work this thing out. Much as Bohn must have calculated that the canning of Embree would be a quick and cheap solution to the perception of the state of CU football, a quick tossing of Bohn would go miles toward wiping the slate clean. I'm not too sure that Bohn is going to survive this mess that he created.

The circus has to end

Barnett got in trouble because he wasn't smart enough to deal with a situation that wasn't his doing. I don't know if we'll even know why Hawkins imploded. It appears that he was just handed a good system at Boise and when it came to implementing his own he failed miserably. Embree was given a shell of a program and not enough time, though in the time he had there was no on field improvement. Perhaps it would have come over the course of the next year but we'll never find out and it is in the past now. I do believe Embree was possibly pushed on Bohn as well and given the time period and the set of facts in play during that time he capitulated. Now we've been spurned by our apparent top choice to replace Embree, and possibly played as a bargaining chip, Bohn is looking like a fool with his handling of the program the last 7 years. (wow has it been that long?) Colorado needs to hire DeRuyter or MacIntyre ASAP and then fire Bohn. This is disgraceful and he needs to be held accountable.
