Buy or Sell: Kansas State Week
In honor of the "who knows what the heck will happen" game this weekend, Woodrow and I will be putting our stamp of approval or disapproval on certain subjects ranging from the game this weekend to random topics that we probably shouldn't touch but will anyway. I must thank the guys from PTI as we snag their game of "Buy or Sell." We invite you to participate if you have an opinion.

Chatting It Up With Bring On The Cats
TB: Offensively, Colorado is weakest stopping the run. Unfortunately, this is also K-State's offensive weakness. Still, the Cats need to at least try to establish a running game. Last week was their best effort in this area to date, but it was also against Texas A&M's thoroughly inept defensive unit. We need to see another 10 or so designed carries for Josh Freeman, and Logan Dold needs to continue his crafty north-south running.
That said, even though CU's strength defensively appears to be stopping the pass, I think we can have some success tossing the ball. The Buffs are averaging less than two sacks per game, and Freeman has only been sacked thrice on the season. He should have time to throw, and if we can establish something resembling a running game, the play-action could be available. The key for the Cats, as always, will be offensive balance.
Defensively, it looks like our effort against A&M last week allowed the Aggies to slide past CU and out of the Big 12's offensive cellar. Rodney Stewart still scares me, as does just about any FBS running back against our defense, but with the struggles of Cody Hawkins and the offensive line, I think we can put pressure on the quarterback. The last few weeks we have been running what appears to be either a 4-3 or 4-2-5 defensive alignment; I think we need to stack the box in an attempt to take away the run, because Josh Moore and Blair Irvin should be able to handle man coverage on the outside. I'll have to defer to the TRR guys here, but I don't think CU has any outstanding receivers on the outside. At least, none who are among the Big 12 leaders in receiving. Of course, Josh Moore got burned by Mike Goodson last week at A&M, so my confidence in him may not be entirely justified.

"The Big 12 is in Trouble" Buff Bites
Last week it was Todd Reesing, this week it is Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman. The Buffs are the big O-fer against these two quarterbacks going win-less in the five contests.
Again, if a Big 12 team wants to put their star quarterback at risk like Texas does, the Buffs need to hit Freeman hard every time he crosses the line of scrimmage. Last week Freeman added another dimension to his game, rushing 18 times for 95 yards and 4 touchdowns. Is Texas A&M that bad or is Josh Freeman that good?
I have a dream that one day the Buffs will have a quarterback in the top tier of the Big 12, I have a dream!
The Big 12 has a problem right now. On the surface it seems good but when it is all said and done, the Big 12 is just too good to be rewarded. What if Texas is upset this weekend by Missouri and Oklahoma State loses to OU. Texas Tech will certainly fall sometime, they always do. The Big 12 is now like the SEC and are, in essence, eliminating themselves. Penn State is a good team but who will test them? USC will probably run the table and without a conference championship game, these two schools may meet each other in the National Championship. It would be an absolute mockery of the game if any team other than the SEC and Big 12 is playing in the title game.
A pretty good synopsis of the Colorado Buffaloes season through the mid point by ESPN blogger, Tim Griffin. As I commented on in a previous round table, Cha'pelle Brown has been as solid as they come so far this year and has exceeded expectations. A couple weeks ago I gave the offensive MVP to Rodney Stewart but Josh Smith has definitely supplanted him as the #1 player on this offense and this Buff team. Josh Smith has been the difference between wins and losses this year. It's like Tim said, win three of the next four, things are rosy in Colorado.
Mack Brown does his best to try and get moved to the #2 spot to avoid the curse of #1 this year (OU and USC both lost at the #1 spot). Could Mizzou rebound and beat Texas?
The Longmont Times tries to defend the Kansas State Wildcat defense, saying that they are improving. The stats don't lie. The Wildcats have given up over 500 yards to there last four opponents.
Have all of you checked out the Recruiting Section on the right side of the page? Hopefully you are finding it useful as there has been some good news that past couple of days about 4 star recruits Edward Nuckols and Bryce McNeal as well as James Johnson.
It looks like the jig is up on Kansas as they are now 19.5 point underdogs to Oklahoma this weekend. I feel for Denverjhawk when I write this but the line has jumped 2 points since it opened yesterday. I didn't think the #15 team in the nation could lose by 19 points.

Follow the Leader
If you look on our old site, you will see that Buffs fans chose quarterback Cody Hawkins as the player who will most dictate the success of the Colorado Buffaloes this year. Cody has been receiving high remarks from training camp this year, coming in stronger and having a year of experience under his belt. In the first scrimmage this year, Cody put up great numbers going 17-26 for 268 yards and 5 total touchdowns (3 passing, 2 rushing) and in the second scrimmage, he was strong again completing 17 passes out of 25 for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception. Entering his second year, there will be an expected improvement for Hawkins that will be needed to take the Buffs from a 6 win team in 2007 to a 7 - 8 win team with a very difficult schedule in 2008. What kind of improvement you ask, well luckily for us, the Big 12 has been deemed the best quarterback conference in college football this year so we can take a look at some of the best the Big 12 has to offer and see where Cody needs to improve. There are 7 quarterbacks in the Big 12 who we looked at that had played at least two years - Chase Daniels, Josh Freeman, Colt McCoy, Todd Reesing, Graham Harrell, Stephen McGee and Zach Robinson. Although some of these quarterbacks had limited action in their freshman/1st year, they all had extensive playing time in their 2nd year. Other than McGee, these quarterbacks are seen as some of the top players in the Big 12, if not the country. You can view the stats of all the quarterbacks mentioned above here. Below are the average statistics of these quarterbacks and where Cody needs to go in his sophomore year compared to the other QB's in the Big 12. Like I said before, this is a strong comparison sample.

By all accounts, Cody had a great year when you compare his freshman year with the other quarterbacks' freshman year in the Big 12. Most of the top quarterbacks listed didn't get extensive work, though, in their first year of eligibility so Cody has a leg up there. But looking at the chart and comparing Cody's freshman year to the 7 Big 12 quarterbacks 2nd year, the word consistency jumps off the page at me. Cody will have to become a more mature and consistent passer. The interception:touchdown ratio needs to get down to the 1:2.5 to 1:3 range. The Buffs had too many turnovers last year coming up -4 in the all important plus/minus stat. His completion percentage is also well below the average by about 7%. It's definitely not all negative for Cody either. His touchdown passes are very comparable as well as his passing yardage.
As the Buffs begin to open up the offense, I believe you will see Cody's numbers begin to flourish. Teams were able to game plan against a rather vanilla offense last year where the Buffs couldn't match the talent levels of most of the teams they played. The Buffs now have a wrinkle in their offense as Coach Hawkins begins to implement his Boise State style of play, throwing in a no-huddle and almost exclusively going out of the shotgun which is more of the offense Cody played in high school. Second and probably the most important reason that Cody will improve his statistics to join the upper echelon quarterbacks in the league is the talent he is now surrounded with. The Buffs have great WR's in Josh Smith and Scotty McKnight whom both provide something different in the Buffs' attack. If Patrick Williams turns to corner this year, you have three solid WR's with experience plus an experienced tight end in Riar Geer.
Cody also has a more versatile backfield. Last year, Hugh Charles could dazzle but he never was the dependable workhorse that the Buffs needed, often drawing criticism from the coaches. Demetrius Sumler and Darrell Scott will be instant improvements over last year while Rodney Stewart will be the surprise of the bunch. I can't wait for those outside of Boulder to see this kid run. For you Kansas State fans, he is about 5'7" and wears #43 if that rings a bell and he is exactly that type of player. Right now they are saying Stewart is ahead of both Polk and Scott.
The talent the Buffs have right now is definitely exciting. If Cody Hawkins can improve his numbers to be in line with the quarterbacks that came before him, we could be looking at a special year in Boulder.
