Husker’s RB Quentin Castille Dismissed From Team

Nebraska RB Quentin Castille has been dismissed from the team due to violating team rules. Check out this nice take from Corn Nation, who realize that Castille was a pretty big part of this offense unlike many Husker fans who have claimed the "next guy" in line was better anyway. Helu was going to be a nice compliment to Roy Helu Jr. From Corn Nation: Earlier today, running back Quentin Castille was dismissed from the Nebraska football team for a "clear violation of team rules", and whatever that means, doesn't matter now. I'm sure many Husker fans will have that same attitude towards the situation - that it doesn't matter and that another back will step up and take Castille's place. Human beings, especially football fans in August, are good at rationalization, if nothing else. And perhaps that's not a bad attitude to have - after all, that's what's going to have to happen if the Huskers are going to proceed to their goal of winning the Big 12 North and having a shot at the Big 12 title. Sad fact is, Castille will be hard to replace. He came of age in last year's Gator Bowl against Clemson and showed that he could be a starter. This season he would have been a great complement to Roy Helu Jr, providing a bigger, more powerful back to Helu's breakaway speed.

Woelk: CU must decide if 'competitive' is actual goal

Strong article from Neill Woelk and well, it's hard to argue with any of it. In an athletic department that is stuck in neutral if not reverse, will a leader within the University right the ship or as Neill says, "if being competitive isn't the goal, CU's administration should make that clear." But if CU officials -- and fans and donors and students -- do indeed want Colorado to actually compete in the Big 12, the administration must also be willing to make some concessions to make the playing field level wherever possible. That means admissions, facilities, and simply eliminating unnecessary on-campus barriers that don't exist at CU's peer institutions. It takes strong, bold leadership to create such an atmosphere. But if being competitive isn't the goal, CU's administration should make that clear. Colorado should never hide behind the faade of claiming to be a productive member of one of the nation's premier conferences if that isn't actually the case. Instead, CU administrators should consider another conference. In the Big 12, the majority of schools do indeed see being competitive as a positive experience rather than a burden. Two thumbs up to Neill on this one...unfortunately, it will probably fall on deaf ears.

Ringo: Nick Kasa Partially Tears MCL

Kyle Ringo of the BDC reports that freshman DE Nick Kasa has a partially torn MCL which may require surgey and could lead to a redshirt year. Best case scenario is probably 6 weeks and worse case is the probably wasting a year of Kasa's eligibility if he doesn't return until mid Big 12 play. If he can't play by the Texas game, I would hope they redshirt him considering he probably wouldn't pay dividends right away. Kasa, the 6'7" defensive end from Colorado, was expected to compete for playing time as a true freshman and provide a pass rush that has been missing the pass few years. Tough news as once again a top recruit who is expected to contribute in the early season is injured.

Nick Kasa Injures Leg in Monday's Practice

The severity is not known yet but whenever the coach wishes not to discuss the severity of the injury and the word rehab is used, it doesn't sound good. Kasa’s leg was heavily wrapped in the evening practice session and CU coach Dan Hawkins refused to discuss the specific nature of Kasa’s injury. Hawkins said the injury is not season ending, but Kasa’s availability will depend on how his rehabilitation goes.

"Tell Dan (Hawkins) if we were playing tomorrow, it would be silly of me to call a pass play the way our quarterbacks are playing," Fairchild said Saturday after CSU's first extended preseason scrimmage. The message was clear. "It was the absolute worst practice in my 30 years of coaching that I've seen at quarterback," Fairchild said, noting that development is behind last year's pace.

CSU coach Steve Fairchild being extra critical of his quarterbacks after yesterday's scrimmage even though the QB's went a combined 17-of-24 for 269 yards, four touchdowns and just one interception.
