Thursday CU Buff Bites - Football, Volleyball, Soccer, We've Got it All
What's the point of having D-I sports if you don't cover them? Volleyball Won, Soccer Lost, and Cross Country looks good. Oh, and FOOTBALL!
SB Nation College Football BlogPoll Top 25 Rankings - You saw Jon's Top 25 Ballot yesterday, here's the ranking compiled by SBNation. The Yahoo College Football blogger pegged CU at #17.
University Of Colorado - The Denver Post - One line from the press conference that I missed: Hawkins called the 5 run plays in a row:
Colorado junior tailback Rodney Stewart carried the ball five consecutive times to begin the Buffs’ first possession of the second quarter Saturday in the 24-3 victory over Colorado State. CU coach Dan Hawkins said that was his call."I don’t try to tread on coach (Eric) Kiesau’s territory (as offensive coordinator) a whole bunch," Hawkins said. "But I was pretty adamant on the headset. I think our backs and offensive line need an opportunity to feel it. And I think they were feeling it at that point.
Hawkins most pleased with defense - The Denver Post
Of all the things that went right for Colorado in Saturday's 24-3 win over Colorado State, coach Dan Hawkins was happiest with the defense. It gave up only 245 yards and never allowed CSU inside the red zone. The closest the Rams came was the Colorado 20 where the Buffaloes blocked a field goal.
McKnight, Schroeder receive Athlete of the Week Award - CUBuffs.com
Football captain Scotty McKnight (senior) and volleyball player Kerra Schroeder (sophomore) were both named CU Athlete of the Week for the week of September 3rd-9th. This is McKnight's second Athlete of the Week award during his career at CU, while Schroeder earns it for the first time.
Tedford Happy With Performance, Ready For Bigger Challenge - Bearinsider.com - Cal Coach Jeff Tedford's comments sound familiar... they were sloppy on offense, the competition goes up this week, etc:
Undoubtedly, the size, speed and competitiveness will be ramped up next week, with the Buffaloes coming off a surprisingly-easy 24-3 win over nemesis Colorado State, a team the Buffs always seem to struggle against. "I've already talked to the team about that in this morning's meeting," said Cal head coach Jeff Tedford. "I made it clear."Many expected the running game to flourish against smaller Aggies, yet the Bears' results were mixed on the ground, with Vereen averaging 4.8 yards per carry and backup Isi Sofele averaging 5.9 yards per carry on nine rushes. "We had a couple times where we got hit in the backfield which you never like to see, but that's not just on the offensive line," said Tedford.

The Ralphie Report Staff Weekly Discussion - Let's Talk Football
Now that we have a "staff" other than Bob and I with the fantastic additions of Ash and David (and Ryan) we are going to be doing a weekly discussion about the Buffs, college football and whatever randomness I decide to discuss.
Feel free to throw your answers to the same questions into the comments below.
Buffs Questions:
1) We saw our first season opener with Tyler Hansen as the starting quarterback. Rate his performance from 1-10 and give me the single best and worst thing that he did in the game.
Bob: 6.5. I think Tyler would rank himself there as well after watching film. He went 17 of 25 but I count three throws where if he sets his feet, the Buffs have big plays and potentially widen the margin of victory. Against Colorado State, you can get away with that. Against Cal, you have to make plays that you can control. As for the best thing he did, I really liked the way he moves in the pocket when he needs to. Some people say he should stay in the pocket more instead of running but I love what he does when he is outside the pocket. Rarely does a bad thing happen when he gets outside and presses the line of scrimmage. The fact that a defense has to account for Hansen's ability to make plays with his feet is huge. He has to play huge against Cal for the Buffs to pull off the upset.
Ash: I'll give him a 4, it seemed like he had ants in his pants. Running back on the long sack(s) was the worst thing, whereas the TD pass to Patterson was the best.
David: 6.5. He led his team to a victory, but his accuracy was off at times. He looked a little hurried when he didn't have to be, while also holding onto the ball too long at other points. That said, he spread the ball around and found the open receivers.
Worst thing: Deep pass to Richardson. That was just plain awful.
Best thing: Finding the wide open Patterson and McKnight for those TDs. We've had receivers get open in past years, but the QBs have had trouble finding them. This was nice to see.Jon: 6. If we can somehow get Tyler to continue to improve on his footwork in the pocket, I think we will see a vast improvement in his accuracy. That being said, he played a great game in a high pressure situation.
Fan Breaks Down Cal's Defense
Here's a nice little preview of what we can expect to see from Cal on Defense. This is a fanpost over on California Golden Blogs that was bumped to the front page. It makes a portion of my Game Preview useless, but I'm just fine with that.
Revisiting Predictions
bumped to front page from fanpost section - Bob Bell
So I mentioned in the prediction thread that I thought it would be interested to see what changed after week one. So, um, here's mine. (caveat- it really isn't that interesting)
1) The Buffs play five games on the road this year – @ Cal, @ Missouri, @ Oklahoma, @ Kansas and @ Nebraska. Any chance the Buffs break the road losing streak this year?
OLD: Yes. 3 of those are very winnable, and who knows what will happen by the end of the year with the last NU game for the near future.
NEW: yep, still believe it. Kansas looks spectacularly winnable. Oklahoma was lousy (not calling that a win- just sayin'), Missouri was mediocre. Cal looked better than I expected.
2) Who will be the Buffs leading receiver in 2010? WR Toney Clemons, WR Scotty McKnight, WR Travon Patterson or WR Paul Richardson?
OLD: catches- McKnight. receiving yards- Clemons. Total yards- maybe Patterson
NEW: same/ same? I don't know. The vertical passing game was nonexistent. / Solid Patterson.

A.J. Green To Miss Four Games, First Game Back Will Be Against The Buffaloes
News has just broke that Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver A.J. Green will be forced to miss the first four games of the 2010 season. Because the Bulldogs play fellow SEC member South Caroina this weekend, his first game back after suspension will be in Boulder when Georgia plays the Buffs.
University of Georgia wide receiver A. J. Green must miss four games before being eligible to play again, the NCAA ruled late this afternoon.
Green was found to have violated the NCAA agent benefits rules by selling his Independence Bowl game jersey to an individual who meets the NCAA definition of an agent.
Tough break for the Buffs, but it will still be his first game to play this season. Georgia is appealing the suspension.

So, yes, Cal played FCS UC-Davis last week so these stats are very much skewed. Another reason for the skewed offensive numbers: Colorado ran only 60 plays from scrimmage against CSU. On the flip side, California snapped the ball 75 times. Consider that when evaluating the offensive numbers. It will be interesting the see if CU speeds things up this week against Cal or if they prefer not to get into a play for play shootout with the Bears on the road.
A few things stick out that I always like to see the Buffs make some progress on: tackles for loss, sacks and turnover margin. Colorado's 8 tackles for loss last weekend against Colorado State was impressive. Even more eye opening was holding the Rams to 49 yards rushing when clearly that was supposed to be a strength of the team. Reading the great Cal site on SBNation.com, California Golden Blogs, they are slightly concerned about the offensive and defensive lines. For one, they feel the Bears should have sacked UC-Davis more than two times and second, they believe their running game with RB Shane Vereen should have had more big plays against an inferior opponent.
Also, CGB has made it clear that one way to slow down the Cal offense from years past is to hit QB Kevin Riley early and often. They feel when he is pressured, he has a tendency to lose his composure. So once again we go back to the matchup of the game: Jalil Brown/Jimmy Smith vs. Marvin Jones/Keenan Allen. If the two Buff corners can defend on the perimeter and allow aggressive play from the front seven, I like the Buffs chances to hang in the game.

Wednesday CU Buff Bites - Football Week 1 Wasn't By the Numbers
The Big 12 as the League of the Running Back? CU's new WR's combined for 54 yards? Week 1 wasn't always by the numbers, but it got the job done.
Instant Impact - The Longmont Times-Call
Statistically, the University of Colorado’s trio of new receivers didn’t do a whole lot in Saturday’s 24-3 win over Colorado State. Toney Clemons, Travon Patterson and Paul Richardson combined for just five catches for 54 yards. But, the impact of the three speedsters can’t be measured in those numbers. These numbers are more telling: six for 78 and 4.4. The speed of the new receivers opened up the field on Saturday, helping senior slot receiver Scotty McKnight catch six passes for 78 yards. That speed also spread the field and helped the Buffs’ running game average 4.4 yards per rushing attempt.
Hawkins said that one of the numbers that jumped out at him from Saturday’s game was that the Buffs ran just 60 offensive plays. "Typically, when you have 60 plays, you don’t win usually," he said. "Normally, when we win you’re probably going to have in the mid-70s. I was kind of shocked about that when I looked at it." Saturday was the 12th time in the Hawkins era that CU ran 60 plays or less. They are now 3-9 in those games. The other wins came against CSU in 2007 (60 plays) and against Iowa State in 2006 (57 plays).
Quotes from Yesterday's Dan Hawkins Press Conference - CUBuffs.com - The link goes to the video, and I've jotted down some quotes here:
On Cal's statistically suspect Pass Defense in 2009: They're different defensively than they were last year, they've got some talent back there... [exploit] isn't the right word at all, there's things we've got to fix on our endCal team speed vs. Cal team speed: Their D-Line is very explosive, they've got great team speed. All their skill guys can run, that'll definitely be a big step up.
On rotating 8 D-linemen: You'd always like to have five, but having the competition pushes some guys and it means that you can't slack off.
"What do you need to clean up with the Run game?": It might be a shade here or a hat inside or outside here, or the guy putting eyes on the backer sooner, or picking up on your combination block here, just the nuances of running the ball
On the Rugby punt: The intent there is that when you move the pocket like that, you're giving their punt return team something else to think about... and I think that kick is a more natural stroke for him, I think he kicks it better like that... Though I've been telling him; "you have 53 yards of open field to kick it to, if you don't kick it very far, even mobile Dan Hawkins can get to it," i told him "you've got to spread it around more..." But he'll get better.
On Pericak: You might think that, "Oh, he didn't get as many sacks as I though he would," but he takes on a tremendous number of double teams. He and Cunningham fit those plays perfectly. Not a lot of flash, but... the kind of guy who's there every play
On the 7,000 CU Fans going to the Cal game in Berkeley: That definitely helps us, having that voice in the crowd, that helps our guys.
"He [Justin Torres] might be our smoothest zone-runner, I mean he sees every cut; he hits every cut almost perfect every time, he has really nice vision and he can do it without changing a lot of direction"
Fun with Numbers - CU At the Game
After the first weekend of college football, the numbers are always skewed.Of course, this makes them all the more interesting … Hawaii, which lost to USC, 49-36, in the opener, leads the nation with a total of 459 yards passing (the 588 total yards offense is almost double what Colorado put up on Colorado State). That number should come down this week, as the Warriors travel across the continent to face Army, which just happens to be second in the nation (after week one, anyway) in pass defense (having surrendered only 31 yards passing in a 31-27 win over Eastern Michigan). We’ll check in on the Buffs’ third opponent again in a week or so …
The Buffs’ opponent this weekend, Cal, leads the nation in total defense, having given up only 31 yards of offense to Cal-Davis. The Golden Bears are 3rd in rushing defense, and 6th in pass defense, but it was just the Cal-Davis Aggies, after all. Cal also is tied for the nation’s lead in sacks allowed, having given up zero to the Aggies in the 52-3 thumping.
The Buffs are first in the Big 12 in scoring defense, and tied for 11th nationally, after giving up only a field goal to Colorado State; Colorado is also tied for the Big 12 lead in sacks, with three (good enough for a tie for 16th nationally); and The Buffs are 2nd in the conference in rush defense (49 yards surrendered), behind only Texas A&M (31 yards). (At the end of the third quarter, the Buffs had given up only 20 yards of rushing to the Rams) …
Tough Challenge Ahead - The Longmont Times-Call
"It is a lot tougher challenge," CU junior quarterback Tyler Hansen said. Although unranked, Cal is used to winning. The Bears have been to a bowl game in seven straight seasons and have never finished with a losing record in coach Jeff Tedford’s eight years at the school. That’s quite a difference from facing a CSU team that has now lost 10 straight games.
CUatthegame Blogger makes a deal with the football gods, and the Big 12 is off and running: after the jump.
