Discussion Board: Recruiting Part III

Here is an updated list of players who have visited (or will visit) CU who remain uncommitted. Please add your knowledge in the comments below and I will continue to update this list.

Last Updated: 7:50 PM, January 29

Players are listed by highest Rivals/Scout/ESPN rating

DE Luke Kaumatule **** Honolulu, HI Rivals Scout Will visit 1/27. Multiple offers. Will choose between: Colorado, Stanford, UCLA, Washington. Favorite: Stanford. He has been a Stanford commit since 9/2/11.

OLB Seth Jacobs **** Arroyo Grande, California Rivals Scout Visited 1/20. Multiple offers. Will choose between: Colorado, Oklahoma State, Arkansas. Favorite: Unknown. He claimed he enjoyed his Colorado trip.

DE Ewing Simmons *** Stockton, California Rivals Will visit 1/20. Will choose from: Multiple Pac 12 offers (unknown). Favorite: Unknown. Enjoyed his trip to Boulder.

WR/CB Jonavaughn Williams *** San Juan Capistrano, California Rivals Visited 12/3. Will choose between: Colorado, Oregon State, San Diego State. Favorite: Colorado. Everything I have read points towards a CU commitment. However, Oregon State just offered and San Diego State seems to be hanging around. Teammate of CU prospect Keith Parker.

Chris Solomon *** West Covina, California Rivals Scout Will visit 1/13. Will choose between: Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, Nevada. Favorite: Unknown.

OG Isaiah Folasa ** Corona, CA Visited 1/20.

WR Jason Gaines, El Cajon, CA Visited 1/20. Currently does not hold an offer from CU.

FB Keith Parker San Juan Capistrano, California Rivals Visited 12/3. Unrated. Still does not hold a scholarship offer from any school. Continue to keep an eye on this guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw a CU offer eventually, if not, he could be a “preferred walk-on.” Teammate of CU prospect Jonavaughn Williams.

Thanks for the update

I saw that Solomon had CU as high on his list, I have a feeling that he will commit to CU

My hope is JCP, Rippy , Crawley, Kaumatule, Solomon and Williams round out this class…

Crawley and Rippy would be really good player to get

For some reason I think Rippy is one of those silent commits Embree talked about, but things also change. Crawley is very important to get.

I think Crawley visited Kansas and Wilson might have went with him. Not sure though Regardless, I hope we finish out strong.

still haven't decided

I’ve got a Ucla fan buddy who might want to go to that game, and USC not being televised makes that more intriguing, but that Stanford game, coupled with my recent away game history:

52-7 @ Cal

gives me pause. You? David was thinking of going, too

Only places I know of The Lab and McKays. Lab is ok but overpriced for what your getting (sterile environment and mediocre tap selection). Never been to McKays but I think the LA alumni association is doing a pregame event there from 5-7.

The bottom line over the last couple weeks is we have lost a ton of momentum.

We are losing recruits to rival schools left and right, our “top target” has been kicked out of school, Crawley is enamored by Kansas, and quite frankly I’m getting very worried. I’m glad the recruits visiting this weekend got to see an epic basketball game. However, we must secure a couple of these 4 star guys (I still count Dillon as one). I know recruiting sites are not perfect estimates of potential but being the recruiting junky I am, I greatly value their opinion. We need a big commitment. Bad.

by BigXIITDOG on Jan 22, 2012 9:49 PM MST reply actions

Don't get me wrong

I see potential in a lot of the recruits we have committed to us. I just am tried of seeing our team settle for “sleeper” recruits. I know beggars can’t be choosers with 3 wins but…GAHHHH I’m just frustrated.

even though Crawley might be the only 4* listed for CU on Rivals

I’m still not sure I fully understand why Dillon was “demoted” to a 3 star prospect not long after committing to CU. He was selected as one of the Elite 11 quarterback prospects over the summer, only to be almost immediately demoted. Let’s hope the same doesn’t happen to Crawley now that he’s chosen to be a Buff :-(

by Boulder-96 on Jan 22, 2012 11:41 PM MST up reply actions

on a side note

Greg Brown has to get some better pictures of himself on Rivals. The second mug shot on his bio looks like it was taken after a stumbling back to the office from a 3 martini lunch.

I am excited for Crawley

Looks like we got some athletic and talented guys coming in. hopefully Rippy too. Henderson and Crawley in the defensive backfield for a couple years…could be really good. hopefully he comes here, works hard and shows his talent

It took all of us working together to fail

by dune1980r on Jan 23, 2012 12:34 AM MST up reply actions

those are different entities

Rivals had him at a 4 star and then dropped him down. Scout never had him higher than 3. Elite 11 is an ESPN camp, and has nothing to do with the star system. All that matter is how you perform for the week at the camp. Cody Hawkins was an Elite 11 as well.

Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 23, 2012 8:05 AM MST up reply actions

While Dillon did perform well in the camp

and FWIW, I read from somewhere else that the Elite 11 in Cody’s year is kind of different from recent years. And he was not chosen purely based on himself

by cnbuff410 on Jan 23, 2012 2:59 PM MST up reply actions

huh? So what?

My point is, Elite 11 has nothing to do with finding the best 11 QB prospects in the country. It’s about naming the best 11 who go through those camps. Adam Pittser was an Elite 11 last year. Yes, THE Adam Pittser, now of Wyoming, who also boasted offers from Illinois State, Ball State, and Western Michigan.

Kyle Ringo on Deysean Rippy
I was told by a source two weeks ago that CU wasn’t going to continue to recruit Rippy because he wasn’t serious enough about his grades. He has academic issues that need his attention and he was continuing to take recruiting visits. CU coaches didn’t like that much and backed off him. Maybe they will work it out, but I doubt it at this point

Shoulder to Shoulder

by Buff'em Up on Jan 23, 2012 12:11 PM MST reply actions

Does that mean they pulled the offer?

Although it kind of annoys me that Ringo would report this, honestly that seems to be an internal issue with the program and Rippy. I have to question why a source would leak that, sounds like someone in the department has an issue with it, these guys have all been through the recruiting process, I am sure they understand that part of the excitement of being a high profile recruit is getting to go on campus visits and that the last semester of high school is mainly blown off anyways for the most part. I know I blew my last semester off and I had already been accepted to college and knew I would graduate, so I didn’t really care at that point. I assume Rippy and alot of these guys are all in the same boat.

well, like you said, you had already been accepted and then took it easy last semester

Rippy hasn’t. I’m assuming his “issues” could prevent him from getting into CU and if the coaches told him he needed to finish strong and instead he’s just screwing around instead I could understand why they’d be upset. Very unfortunate though, I wanted him obviously.

ESPN Posting

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/preps/post/_/id/14353/time-is-of-the-essence-for-jacobs

If you read the post, he knocks the Buffs a little bit. But then in the same article, his HS coach says UCLA doesn’t have that good of a shot (they must have 65 scholarships this year) and the writer mentioned that it’s important to play in the PAC12. Sounds like CU to me.

by CUJCC on Jan 23, 2012 4:45 PM MST up reply actions

To be clear:

When you say “he knocks the Buffs” you mean the writer of the article, not Jacobs.

Having said that, after reading the article this smells to me of a “let’s play coy and then surprise everyone on announcement day by staying with the hometown team” written all over it. I very much hope I’m wrong, but I’m not expecting to see him put the CU hat on…

by Buff-in-CA on Jan 23, 2012 5:52 PM MST up reply actions

You are correct.

I was talking about the writer. He made CU sound like the Citadel. Although your theory could come true, UCLA can’t have many if any scholarships left.

Interesting story from Drew Goodman today on the radio

He was talking about CU continuing to recruit Yuri even after Twittergate. He agreed with Embree’s decision to pursue Yuri for the same reasons we have all mention, the kid deserves a 2nd chance, what 17 year old doesn’t have a filthy mouth. He went a little further in defending CU by explaining how Embree and co. actually backed off the recruitment of a coveted prospect because of character and grade issues.

I can only speculate that if you connect the dots Drew was eluding to the situation with Deaysean Rippy. Earlier this week, as stated in this thread, Kyle Ringo reported -

They might be talking about separate individuals but I think this speaks volumes about what Embree will and will not permit at CU. He’s not going to bring just anyone into the program. He’s going to try and do it the right way, with the type of kids he feels comfortable with.

This makes me happy.

I’m not saying that Rippy will be coming. Far from it. There are problems on both ends (mostly CU’s). I’m just not willing to write him off until he signs on the dotted line. At this point, CU needs him, and he wants to be here. So there might be some space in there to come together.

Probably Rippy

JCF is a goner. Kaumatule is scheduled to visit CU this coming weekend. Even though he may not have passed Stanfod admissions, why we he commit now? I still think we may be in the running for Jacobs, but the timing isn’t right. Kozan isn’t going to happen.

Sounds like he was sold on CU for quite some time.

"This is a rebuilding type of year and they just need players," Crawley said Thursday. "I fell in love with the school as soon as I went out there for a visit. I love the coaches and the atmosphere and everything. They came on a home visit and met my parents and that was it right there."

I've got a question.

Bleacher Report says we might land Folasa because two weeks ago UCLA told him he probably wouldn’t qualify academically. I have never thought of UCLA as having higher standards for admission then us. True or not?

by Phil Fraser on Jan 26, 2012 7:08 PM MST up reply actions

no, a confluence of failures made it impossible

No one to go with, so I tried to find a good single. Found a pair, 4 rows behind the CU bench. But I couldn’t split them, so I would’ve ended up paying $75 for just me. So I figured I just go down and scalp one after work. Then I spilled a mango lassi all down my pants, so I had to come home and change after work. Figured I could still make it if there wasn’t traffic. There was traffic. Blah. That’s OK, I really shouldn’t be spending the money anyway.

I wouldn’t mind missing out on him now, honestly (depending on who else we can get). We’re suddenly flush with DBs, with only a couple of spots left to fill. Luke K. is off the board- got admitted to Stanford, so he’s solid there.

Are we finished?

I can’t seem to figure whether or not we’re finished. I’ve read that a class cannot have more than 25 signees and even though CN and DM don’t count towards this class, it would seem as though we’re full. However, there are some interesting names still floating out there (Jacobs, Rippy, Simmons, Solomon, Fosala, Timmons), all of whom have expressed some interest, but I don’t even know if there’s any room if they did choose to come to CU…is this a foregone conclusion…

by CU2000 on Jan 30, 2012 12:10 PM MST reply actions

As per The Wiki

Looks like you can sign 28 from 2/1/12-5/31/12, but only have 25 new schollys per year. Weird. Guess if everyone gets in you have to have some gray shirt and count towards the following year? Or you tell some poor kid that you were just kidding, he has to go to school somewhere else. OUCH. I had no clue this is what we were doing.

you serious?

I thought that just meant he already turned in his paperwork but it isn’t really “official” official until signing day. Lots of schools list people that have already signed LOIs.

by nebraskasux on Jan 30, 2012 7:01 PM MST up reply actions

yeah- since he enrolled mid year, we can count him back toward last year (like a greyshirt)

Before signing day, a player signs a financial aid agreement instead of a standard LOI, which allows him to receive his scholarship money early. It’s semantics, really, but it counts. Connor Wood, too.

the only one on our list

When I heard that Embree wanted to sign 28, I figured it would be 25 plus Wood, Norgard, and Kelley. But Wood and Kelley aren’t on the list.

So either Embree’s counting on some nonqualifiers, or things are about to get a little shady.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 30, 2012 7:42 PM MST up reply actions

I wonder if McCartney's

grandkid would grayshirt. Or maybe didn’t one or more of the recruits get injured last year? Greyshirting could allow them to heal up a little more…

Ugh… I’m really hoping CU doesn’t get any bad press if we have to reneg on a player enrolling in fall. That would suck and put a damper on what looks like an otherwise fantastic class.

by BuffulanceMan on Jan 31, 2012 6:21 AM MST up reply actions

Kyle Ringo says Embree's staff still couod sign 3 more commits if everything falls into place
there is a recruit who visited and committed to another program but CU coaches believe they flipped him and he will sign with them on signing day
The guy they are waiting on is linebacker Seth Jacobs. They also believe they might get the guy I mentioned above and they have another kid visiting this weekend. If they get all three, I’m not sure how they get everyone in. Seems like they are counting on some guys to not qualify academically and some guys to grayshirt
Embree will explain it all on Wednesday. It’s already a huge class and the foundation of the program for the next four or five years.

Seems like if anyone has the visting lists for last weekend and this weekend it might be easy to guess as to who they might be talking about.

6’6" 278 lb Offensive Tackle, Ed Caldwell from Highlands Ranch, has also agreed to defer 2 scholoarships (I don’t know where) to walk on at CU.

This class could be huge.
