Tyler Hansen

Is he the one?? Well he is for now but . . .

Star-divide

After watching the game Saturday I didn't think Hansen played too well, he wasn't terrible either but he wasn't the leader I was hoping to see. A few things I noticed was that his accuracy just wasn't there but what bothered me even more was his lack of poise in the pocket. I know the o-line struggled but I wasn't surprised by that at all (new o-line coach, new center(s), replacing a first round draft pick, etc) but I would have liked to see Hansen be more composed. He looked shaky trying to progress through reads and he was holding on to the ball WAY too long. 7 sacks is just ridiculous, again I know the o-line didn't offer much help but I would have like to see a lot more poise and confidence out of the senior signal caller.

Looking into the future I like the progress that Hirschman has made and I like that Schrock seems to be a great find. Also I'm excited about Wood and Dillon, I think this position will become stronger going forward but I was curious to see if anyone agrees with me that they hoping for more out of Hansen. thoughts?

I've been on a self-imposed hiatus from RR

due to being diagnosed with clinical dissapointment-itis after the first game but I guess I have something to say about Tyler: He’s the best we have this season and there is nothing to be gained by starting a QB controversy. I don’t think Hirschman or Shrock or whoever could’ve done any better with that awful o-line play we had against Hawaii and the last thing Hansen needs is to be looking over his shoulder all season (again). I was glad to see that he seemed to have some chemistry with P-Rich because as has been noted on this site Richardson wasn’t a huge factor last year when Hansen was playing QB, just with Cody.

One of my main complaints about the previous staffs handling of Hansen was that the gameplan seemed designed for Cody when they were massively different players. Unfortunately I still have similar issues with how he’s being used. Yes, I know we want to run a pro-style offense but when you have a QB that is a good runner you need to take advantage of that. There wasn’t one designed run for him and only one bootleg play that I can remember the entire game. Tyler will never be a QB that sits back in the pocket and picks apart defenses. He’s good when he’s out of the pocket running around, give him a chance to succeed! (or at least give the defense something to think about)

If you had told me before the game that Hansen would throw for more yards Moniz I would of probably bet my life savings on the Buffs to win, yet Moniz was the one busting the long runs and keeping our defense off balance.

Now I’m just venting about the game in general… I knew we weren’t gonna be great this year, I certainly wasn’t one of the people predicting 7 or 8 wins, but I expected to see a different Buffs team out there last Saturday than what we’ve seen the last few years. Instead I saw the EXACT same thing: Same anemic offense, same sketchy play calling, same stupid penalties, same poor o-line play, same bad special teams (kickoffs and coverage I mean, O’Neal was good and Oliver made his kick), same defense that did it’s best to keep us in the game but eventually started giving up big plays, and same old road loss. I know we have all the same players but I honestly thought the coaches could make a difference. I’m disappointed, not mad, I’ll give this staff time, but I really hope we see a different Buffs team against Cal.

This

Your last paragraph nailed my feelings exactly. The more things change, the more they stay the same, and damn did we look the same.

Ditto

Actually fell asleep during the second quarter. Down 17-0 and looking like the same exact team from last year, only with a better pass rush, I feel asleep watching this team play their first game – one that I have looked forward to for more than eight months! I have certainly tempered by expectations after the opener and hope that we can at least match the five wins from last year under HWSNBN.

Didn't write this to stir up a controversy

I’m just generally frustrated like you mentioned in your last paragraph. Sucks to see us make no offensive progress and not even skill wise but in regards to play calling, consistency and execution. We lack all three of those but coming into this year I was hoping Hansen could maybe step it up and make up for some of those short comings. The CU offense might be tough to watch for the next few weeks so here’s hooping that we stumble upon an offensive identity and our o-line can come together and start producing. Also I am still excited for the qb battle next year with Wood, Hirschman Dillon and Schrock.

Also did anyone hear Embo’s presser yesterday? Classic Embree calling out the fans because we haven’t sold out the Cal game. He then added how when he was an assistant the year Salaam won the Heisman how we were 9-1 and still couldn’t sell out the stadium and said maybe that’s just the culture around here. Too bad that’s true but maybe Embree and company can change all that.

oh yeah, I didn't mean to say you were

just in general.

Yeah, it’s pretty suprising how many seats are left for the Cal game, I thought this would be a sell-out (or really close to it).

I am inclined to give Hansen a break

I know he is a senior, but this is a new offense and O-coordinator and QB coach, so I am sure there will be some growing pains this season as Hansen gets intuned with what he can and can’t do in this offense. Also he is coming back from having his spleen removed, so I am sure there was some jitters about getting hit which I think wore off by the 2nd half last week.

One thing I really noticed in the Hawaii game

is that Tyler telegraphs his passes. He stares down his receivers BADLY. A little pump fake here or there would really help his production.

Hansen not scrambling

While watching last weeks game i noticed Hansen did not scramble when the pocket broke down. I remember from years past that he is a very good runner. Made we wonder if the coaching staff instructed him to stay in the pocket and not take off too early. I say let him play his game. Two threats at running are bstter than one. Would open up the pass also if the defence has to account for a running QB. Just my thoughts.

exactly

I think it has been drilled into his head so much the last few years that he needs to hang tough in the pocket instead of running that now he doesn’t run even when it is absolutely the right thing to do! It’s a shame because I think it hurts his overall productivity.

I think Tyler showed us after the Cal game.....

that he is definitely “the one” for the Buffs in 2011.

by HBbuff on Sep 11, 2011 9:33 AM MDT reply actions

He obviously had a hell of a game....

Statistically. however, i keep thinking back to what could have been if he hadn’t missed all of those throws to P Rich, which should have been made. Agreed, he’s the best we have, but he still can’t make the elite throws. If that 3rd down pass to P Rich in OT had been a fade/lob ball instead of the straight pass he threw it would have been a TD. P Rich easily beat his man (and was visibly upset after the play). We need him to make the throws that re available if we want to win.

I admit it is very hard to complain aboutnhis stats though

you're very right

I’ve always been a “Tyler fan” and like you said it’s hard to be critical about a record-breaking passing day, but let’s face it, a good percentage of his yards we’re from P-rich running after the catch and he missed easily 5-7 (maybe more, I’d have to watch the game again and I’m NOT going to) wide open receivers throughout the game and any one of them could of been a play that made the difference between a win and a loss.

Looking just at his stats you would have to say that he had an “amazing” game. Actually watching it I would call it “good.”

Really hard for me to complain about Tyler's performance on Saturday.....

Ask P Rich if he thought any of Tyler’s throws were “elite.” The one crossing pattern that went for a long TD hit P rich perfectly in stride…..he didn’t have to slow down one bit and the result was a TD. I admit that he missed a couple of receivers in the first half, but geez, he played a damn good game.

by HBbuff on Sep 12, 2011 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions

I never said he didn't play a good game.

I said that he doesn’t consistently make the elite throws. I’ll just ask that you watch one play as it’s a microcosom of what I am talking about: go back and watch the 3rd down pass in overtime. The ball had to have air under it given the defender was inbetween our receiver and the quarterback. Any QB of a top 25 team would easily recognize that situation.

Again, he had a great game. I’m just looking for him (or our QB in general) to play at the next level, because I believe our program deserves that kind of talent.
