RR Radio S1E6 - Getting To Know The Washington State Cougars
This week we are joined by Kyle Rancourt from the Washington State site CougCenter.com. Kyle gives us a great breakdown of the Cougars and what to expect on Saturday. Prior to that we discuss our trip to Columbus and the Ohio State game as well as Jon Embree's fun habit of telling us how "not good" his players are.
This was my favorite episode so far, dig in and let us know what you think.
Season 1 Episode 6:
- Recapping the journey to Columbus
- A quick look back at CU-OSU
- Jon Embree's "coach speak"
- Big games in the Pac-12
- Digging into the Washington St. Cougars with Kyle from CougCenter

Welcome to the club!
Paul Wulff told us how bad his players were, too. He was right, but it also got annoying.
Take aways
1) I don’t mind Embree calling out second string players. He mad a reference about not understanding why some guys are comfortable as back ups. If I’m the coach that burns me too. I think the Fickell critique was a more creative way of saying the same thing.
In all fairness Embree did highlight the fact that Fickell saw some good talent on the team which was part of the tactic in going public about their conversation.
2) look for a lot of sacks on Saturday for the Buffs
3) Kyle loves video games
4) Love the show guys
Shoulder to Shoulder
Oh man, you know me pretty much better than anyone if that's your only take away
I’m completely serious. I literally turned off my Xbox 5 minutes before this podcast took place.

They tailgate in the parking structures at Arizona State
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
I guess if a lot of them are close to the stadium then it makes sense.
Do they do it in ours?

I have seen some tailgates on the top of the engineering parking garage...

Top I understand
I was more surprised that they were on every level.

yeah, I used to tailgate on top of 436
I don’t know about OSU but at ASU getting some shade might be part of it!
maybe it's because cops are less likely to patrol the parking garages

The tailgate on top of the parking garage at CU used to be epic
But last I heard they shut it down a few years ago — somebody threw bottles over the side or something dumb like that.

I think the cougs had a hard season like you have right now.
2009 had lots of injuries. I think it is the most injuries in one season for the cougs. I think Kyle can elaborate about that fateful season.

Bob did a good job articulating something that's irked me for a while as well
Embree will tell anyone with a microphone that the talent level is low. He started it before the season when he said, “we aren’t going to have the best players, but we’ll have the best team.” What’s the point in saying that? And he just keeps saying it. Every player can recognize when the guy in front of him is bigger/ stronger/ faster/ whatever and do his best to adjust. And the coaches can point that out in the film room, but not to the press. Maybe the reason some of the players have gotten comfortable as backups is because they’ve already internalized the fact theat they’re shitty.
To be fair, he did say that some of the guys don’t have enough confidence in themselves to recognize their potential, but I don’t see how statements like “We have some good players. We do. Do we have a bunch of them? No.” are helping anyone

Agreed
It’s not like this is a make-or-break season for him. It’s his first year. If he was on the hot seat I could somewhat understand him doing his best to manage fan expectations. But fans know this is a rebuilding year. Stop demoralizing us by telling us how bad we are.

one more thing, that I didn't even realize until Bob brought up the language he uses
I actually end up MORE depressed after his press conferences than after the games. Early in the Hawkins era, I would get pissed off after the games, but then Hawk would come in all giddy and full of fire talking about just “cinching things up” and I’d feel a little better. But Embree just comes in and tells us, “yep, our players suck.” Part of that is demeanor. I doubt you’d ever use the word giddy to describe Embree (and that’s not a bad thing necessarily, they’re just different personalities), but it’s certainly not the whole thing.

Just a thought
And we all know how far that usually gets me, so take this with a grain of salt, but maybe after 5 years of self-proclaimed “Hawk Love” trying to win games with zero winning seasons, Embree wanted to set the tone early to the press and therefore to recruits that this coach is different from the past one, down to the core beliefs.
I, for one, love it. Not like he’s calling people out by name. Though he and EB & Co. likely do that in film study.

yeah, I don't really see that
I imagine that recruits really only care about how they feel about the current coach, not how different he is from a guy with whom they had no relationship. The only way I see it as a recruiting tool is if he’s trying to imply, “you’ll get early playing time because our current players suck.”
And really, more than for the players, it annoys me as a fan. It’s not exactly inspiring me to buy tickets by saying, yeah we suck, but hopefully we’ll suck less next week, and if everything goes perfectly we might even win. After the tOSU game I was on the phone with my buddies bitching and then deciding where to go for drinks after the Stanford game. After Embree’s press conference, I was looking at my tickets and thinking, “maybe we should just bag it and go to Alcatraz or something.”
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
that's a good idea
I’ve got all day Friday on my own, so I need something to do.

Chalk it up to being a rookie HC
Going to be a lot of growing pains on and off the field until Embree matures into the position which for everyone involved is hopefully sooner rather than later. As far as the comments as a motivational tool, I can’t say since I haven’t been in the locker room. Maybe it works for some and doesn’t for others. I know it doesn’t make me feel any better as a fan but then again neither does the product on the field.
Just rolled into town this afternoon
Looks like a great weather weekend. Stooped by Folsom and the team was going thru their walk through.
We're starting the tailgate at 11:30

watching the Buff Stampede w/ Embree and Charles Johnson. Shot at Zolo Grill
CJ is doing his best to talk up the food, “man, I don’t think these ribs are gonna last long.” “Don’t the empanadas look great?” Embree just sits there and says, “that’s all you.” Dude, SELL some enthusiasm. That’s the point of shooting on location at area restaurants. Hawkins raved about the pancakes at Original Pnake House. He wore a damn space suit and talked about how “awesome” the CU museum is, for Christ’s sake. Embree doesn’t need to go that far, but he should at least look happy to be there. He knows that part of his compensation package comes from these gigs, right?
Ugh, I don’t want to sound down on the guy- I’m not. But it’s obviously something he needs to work on. Out here in LA, a lot of people talk about the frustration in the difference in the enthusiasm gap between Pete Carroll and Lane Kiffin. This is similar.

Think this is especially true in a place like Boulder
engaging the city with the football team should be a priority for the athletic department
