Colorado Receives Verbals from Washington S Ma'ne Manaea & DT Zaheer Webb

The Colorado Buffaloes have received their fourteenth and fifteenth verbal commitments of the 2012 class in OG/NG Zaheer Webb and S/WR Ma'ne Manaea. Both Webb and Manaea play at Lakes High School in Washington. Manaea, a 5'11" 185 pound athlete, has started at Lakes since he was a sophomore. He missed most of his junior season with a concussion but returns as the team's starting safety and receiver. He caught three touchdown passes in a game already this season. On defense, he isn't the biggest guy on the field but is known for his ability to make big plays and hits. The coaching staff also considers Manaea the emotional leader of the team. Rivals.com ranks Manaea as the 15th best prospect in the state of Washington. Manaea projects as a safety at the college level. Manaea will take his official visit to CU on Oct. 22. The News Tribune Ranked Manaea as the top Defensive Player in 3A this season.

Zaheer Webb, a huge 6'3 330 pound lineman, was named to the Seattle Times Preseason All State team as a defensive tackle. Our SBNation Seattle site had an interview with Webb which you can read here as they previewed the top Washington high school players for 2011.

Lakes HS is full of powerhouse players this year, most notably 6'10" 310 pound Zach Banner who is getting recruited by everyone. He visited Michigan last week and is going to visit Oklahoma this season.

Welcome aboard Ma'ne and Zaheer.

NotesFrom the News Tribune:

TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYER
Lakes’ missed having Ma'ne Manaea’s versatility and instincts on the field when a concussion sidelined him halfway through the 2010 season. The safety isn’t the most imposing – he stands 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds – but he’s a big-time hitter with the confidence to match.

Welcome to the Buffs

Really enjoy being able to talk recruiting before January

OK

Glad to see us get more numbers in here… But can’t we sell a few 4 or 5 star recruits who can come in here and start right away?

A blue chip freshman could start for CU next year at: Just about any O-Line spot, RB, WR, TE, DT, OLB, CB and S.

With so little depth and lack of talent at those positions going into 2012 I would think our staff could sell a couple big time recruits on starting all 4 years before they go pro.

No

Going to need to win some games before we get the attention of those kind of players. There is still a lot of peer pressure and these kids don’t want to explain to friends and family why they are going to a team that hasn’t won more than 5 games in the each of the last 5 years when they have an opportunity to play for a team competing for top 10 rankings every week.

Not necessarily

Kid’s and their parents do understand what a rebuilding program is. It is seen as an opportunity to play sooner. If the coaches can get them to believe in their ability to become great, the kids will come. Or they can go to a USC, Oregon or Texas and sit on the bench for 3-4 years before they get a shot.

There are MANY examples of coaching staff’s pulling that off. Ron Zook recruited kids like crazy to Illinois after they were awful.

It IS possible. We just need the right kind of sales effort coming from our coaches.

I’m not trying to be greedy. But that would be HUGE if we could get just a few big recruits in this class!
