Practice 8/8/11 Recap
After three straight D wins the offense gets a W. Rodney stewart was the best player on the field and had 2 long touchdowns. One was thing of beauty when his intended hole never developed he cut back 5 yards along the line and broke a seam. He was able to finish the play and earn the TD with his speed.
Tyler looked great. Sounds like he has been working on his cadence. He was able to draw the D offside 3 times. He had 2 runs for first downs and had a beautiful throw on a free play to P rich for 70 yds. If you like big hits your going to love this team.
They really got on it today. The O line allowed a lot of pressure at first but gave Hirshcman and Tyler plenty of time towards the end. As mentioned the D was getting pressure. They had a couple of sacks and Big hit Rip batted down a ball on the O's goaline.
Parker Orms injured himself again. He dressed in full pads and must have gotten hurt before I got there. I heard him talking on the sideline and the staffs initial guess is a sprain to the same knee he injured last year.
Special teams were up and down. There was a roughing the punter on one play that continued a drive. Oliver made about a 35 yarder. Grossnickle got pulled for asking for a special ball during a live drill. He shanked a ball from the endzone for about 25 yards. He ran the rest of practice.
I'll add more later. I'm headed to the West end for Phil's wings and a bourbon.

Today was the first day in pads. You could tell the players were excited to hit and the coaches had to hold them back a bit.
QB’s: Hansen and Hirschman really struggled in the 11 ons. More so with Hirschman, he looks good in drills but struggled in live action. Schrock seems to be ahead of Dorman
RB: Bieniemy really gets after his RB’s. He constantly gets on Speedy to, “stop dancing” and to “get upfield.” I think EB’s favorite phrase is, “you have got to be sh****** me.” No one appears to be ahead for the #2 spot. D.D. will probably be #4 tho. The funny thing is all our RB’s look pretty much exactly the same. All short 5’7 guys. Harrington still looks good at FB. He can catch the ball and get upfield.
WR’s: Richardson is a beast. He can run, catch, jump. He can do it all, but he is still really thin so hopefully he holds up. Toney looked better pass catching today. Canty reminds me of that Banks guy from KSU. But, him and Vincent were in Kennedy’s dog house today. McCulloch was running in the top 5 WR’s imo
TE: DaVaughn is a horse out there. He can catch the ball but he got absolutely beasted on by Kasa during blocking drills.
OL: They still seem to have trouble in pass pro during 11 ons. We should hope to God we don’t have to use much of our 2nd team OL
DL: As I said earlier Kasa looks much improved. He destroyed Thornton. Obi still looks amazing out there. He was a force to be reckoned with on goal line situations. Chidera isn’t just a pass rusher, he can stop the rush now too. Nembot looks like a gentle giant. Ideally he needs a redshirt year. Tui was working extra with Richter
LB’s: Webb really flies around out there. He seems to be a playmaker like Terrel Smith. Rippy is looking good with Major. That’s my guess for starting LB’s as of right now. Daigh made a nice play in pass coverage with the 2nd teamers. He is big, but physically not quite there yet. Still needs some bulk
CB’s: Still musical chairs with the CB’s. Henderson had an outstanding INT to finish of the 11 ons. He’ll play a lot. Josh Moten actually impressed me a today. He was physical and was fighting a lot with Toney over the ball. Vigo looks like it’s all there, but he hasn’t put it all together yet. Deji acts like a leader of the D. Him barking out orders to seniors was kinda funny. No one has really put together a string of good practices here. Orms was still resting his “calf” but he got up for a bit and took off his wrap and ice.
S: Terrel is still flying around making plays. Polk is a leader on the D with Perkins. He points out guesses on Offensive plays and shouts out orders. Hopefully that’s an indication that Safety has become more instinctual for him, because it is certainly all there physically.
K: Castor appears to be #1 K. What Oliver lacks in leg he makes up in form. His balls really go end over end every time
P: Uhhh… maybe I shouldn’t comment on this one for my sake

Additional Thoughts
In watching Tyler I did have one concern. He held on to the ball far too long on a couple of plays. Coaches called him out a couple of times.
WR – Clemons has been getting some heat for not coming down with balls, he had a better showing today.
RB – Tony Jones, from what I have read, had his best practice. He had a couple of nice runs and a made a play after a catching a screen pass. Speedy did catch some flack, as mentioned by Allbuffs, for dancing too much. This was a problem for speedy last year but from watching today he seems to be making progress. His longest run today came off of a quick cut and burst up a hole with no studder steps. EB should be the biggest contributor to Speedy’s game for sure.
TE – where the heck is Slavin? After having a monster spring game I would expect more pub about him. I’ve read a lot of recaps from practices thus far and he gets no mention. There wasn’t much of a change today but it’s still early.
Ryan Miller was very vocal today. He’s a senior and he’s taken the reins for sure. He had a great practice but still needs to work on getting a little lower on some blocks.
Special teams – This might be the most troubling aspect of our team thus far, right behind CB. There is absolutely no consistency. What worries me most is the unit as a whole is receiving no one on one tutelage. Brookhart has his hands full as the passing game coordinator which leaves little to no time for coaching the kickers. This would be fine in most instances but our kickers suck.
West End Tavern – Behind Boulders lack of special teams and unidentifiable corner backs there appears to be a void in establishments that serve good wings. West End’s sauce was great but they were definitely not smoked. Don’t even get me started on Harpo’s wings, driest meat in town. This by far has to be my biggest worry going into the season. Until this gets fixed I will have to import my wings from Denver’s Moe’s BBQ on Broadway or my neighborhood favorite Big Hoss BBQ wings. They did have a great bourbon/whiskey selection. The Stranahan’s on the rocks was splendid.

Thanks for the writeup
I’ve been concerned about what you mentioned since the day the staff was finalized. Brookhart is passing game coordinator, tight ends coach, AND special teams coach (I heard he bartends at night too!) yet we have two D-line coaches?? That’s too much to do, especially since that is one of the main weaknesses of the team. If and when there is any attrition with the staff we should really bring in someone like Rouen to coach special teams, I think having an actual kicker do it would make a big difference.
Having a bad d-line is the fastest way to losing. see “Hawkins era”

having bad special teams doesn't help much either, see "Hawkins era"
hey, whatever works, I’m just saying it’s a concern for me right now.
The D-line had better be friggin awesome this year though with all the coaching they’re getting!
I was just thinking this morning
If our pass rush doesn’t lead the nation in sacks and we don’t get 5 recruits from Houston, I will remain extremely critical of Kanavis McGhee. We have him duplicating the position of 2 of our more accomplished position coaches, while our brand new to coordinating offensive coordinator is doubling up, and our defensive coordinator is doubling up, both at positions desperately needing to be coached up. And, like you say- Brookhart is all over the map, also with a unit that was abysmal recently. It makes no sense.
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
I really should walk-on at CU
I kicked one year in High School and got 1st team All-State… I turned down D1 schools who wanted me to kick to go play LB for a year at a D2 school. Only to get my ACL ripped like a new inmate in prison!
I started kicking for a local semi pro team last year… Kickoffs are usually 70 yards. 55 yard range on FG’s. Solid from within 45. I know I’m no pro, but I literally think I could beat what CU has been trotting out there lately.
Maybe I could negotiate with Embo a way to skip the whole school thing and show up for a practice or two during the week and play in games while I continue to sell insurance for a living?

Other linemen?
I know Ryan Miller is a stud but what about the rest of the guys? How is Ethan Adkins looking? He is a long time starter I would like to know how he is looking? Thanks
More on the O line
Contrary to Allbuffs observations of the O line I think the 1st team did ok. Enough to get Speedy 97 yards on one play. They allowed a little pressure towards the beginning of practice but if I remember right that was mostly the second team. Adkins looked solid, Bakhtiari did a decent job but had fall start and ran some laps, and Asiata play was encouraging.
BG Brooks had this in his article on cubuffs.com
Embree said the offensive line did a good job of asserting itself and is beginning “to start taking on the identity we need . . . the offense ran the ball.” Senior guard Ryan Miller agreed: “I thought we did a great job today in the run game. The pass (game) could have been a little better, just speaking for myself. But especially when we were backed up, it’s a good feeling to go 97 (yards) . . . that’s a huge momentum change.”
Miller said Monday’s lengthy, ultra-physical practice wasn’t about the coaching staff wanting to make a first-day-in-pads statement: “No, I think it’s what they intend to do for the rest of the season. I know we’re so set on defining who we are and what we are . . . that practice today, that’s what we’re about. It was a good practice; we got after each other . . . I’m really glad we don’t have another practice this afternoon.”

Another plus mentioned in BG’s article is the fact that if CU can have success with the run Hansen can have his way with play action pass and with bootlegs to the end, which he can be very productive with. Without going into too much detail Hansen had some success holding on to the ball and running after the offense had success with Speedy.
Getting back to special teams, Embree invited former CU punter Tom Rouen to camp for his input. This would have never happened last year. I like Embree getting input on an aspect of his team that’s probably not his strong point.
Check out the article.

Shoulder to Shoulder
Hmm...
From what I remember, the O-Line was asserting itself in the run game the past 2 years in practice, then in games we have 5 false starts, 3 holding penalties, 8 QB hurries, etc. etc. etc.
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I’ll continue to be 100% skeptical of 100% of everything until I see us on Sept. 3rd, unless someone can convince me why what they see in camp this year is guaranteed to consistently translate to different results on game day.

BOOOOOO
New regime. You have to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Then again, that’s how I keep getting my heart broken every year.
Lastly – I moved to CA a few months back (GREAT news for me for obvious reasons) anyone know how I can change my username? Would love to switch to Buff-in-CA
I believe you can send an email to support@sbnation.com and they should be able to take care of it for you

SB Nation Denver
I think these guys
will be much more disciplined. For obvious reasons! I’m betting on less mental mistakes on game day.

Grossnickle Really Pissed Off Embree Yesterday
After a play ion which Grossnickle asked for a special ball in live drills, shanked the punt for 20 yds, Embree’s qoute was “I don’t want to see 15 for the rest of the day”. Brookhart asked why and Embreee said he didn’t like his demenaour and his asking for his own ball was BS.

Based on your self proclaimed qualifications ( moron who goes back to bed at 10AM)
You could have a career at my place of work…..
Haha
I really like everything I read on Embo. I really didn’t like Grossnickles shanks and choking last year. He just doesn’t seem like he should be on the team for some reason. Don’t we have some other option at P? Like some guy that came here from Rice?

funny, I heard a different story at the field
Grossnickle was called on to punt at one point in practice. He didn’t see a ball already on the field, so he brought one with him. Nothing special about it. For some reason, that po’d Embree that he came on the practice field with a ball.
I didn’t hear this “he asked for a special ball” anywhere but here, just saying you might have misunderstood. I agree that whatever he did really made Embree mad, but there are no “special” balls, everything is Nike-issued and identical.
The story I heard is that Embree made him run because he didn’t hustle off the field fast enough. Sounds plausible to me; just treating him like any other player.
Nope I was about 10 yards frim the whole occurence
He made him run because he wanted to use a particular ball. I know there all the same but punters can be picky. Embree did also make a comment on his demeanor after he shammed the punt.

Naming a PK
early is a good move. I feel sorry for Castor and his one snap last year, but we need to start penciling in starters. A true Freshman PK is scary, but he does have good credentials coming in. Find that happy place Will.
