SB Nation NCAA Conference Re-Draft - 6 Rounds Complete, Prepare To Be Angry

Haven't heard about the SB Nation Conference Re-draft project? Click here.

We are now through six rounds of the SB Nation Conference Re-draft project, and yes the Buffs are still on the board. I was going to hold off on an update until we got selected but as you can see, who knows when that will be. This should give everyone a good idea of where we stand right now in the eyes of the rest of the country. It's not pretty. Some of the teams that have been selected before CU just absolutely astound me. Maryland? Cal? Cuse? Arkansas? Ugh.

-- Twelve Pack: Texas, Georgia, U.C.L.A., Wisconsin, Washington, Duke
-- Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: Florida, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Miami (Fla.), Auburn, Kansas
-- Team Speed Kills: Alabama, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Arizona, California
-- Conference TMZ: Ohio State, Florida State, Louisville, Michigan State, West Virginia, Maryland
-- The House of a Thousand Sanctions: USC, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Syracuse, Kentucky
-- The Cult Of Les Miles: LSU, Michigan, North Carolina, Stanford, Arkansas, Iowa

Ignoring the Colorado slight for now, who do you think has the strongest conference so far? Where would Colorado fit best if we are finally selected in the seventh round?

Duke and UW? WTF

KU, absurb, Storngest conference I would say is TSK, Bama, OU, Neb all could win their conferences, not sure why you would pick USC over Oregon, also ND at 8, please, HOS is a crap conference except for Oregon.

TSK's

last picks aren’t as strong as HOS though. I’ll agree Bama OU and Neb are pretty strong all on the football front and football does rule. However, USC ND and Oregon aren’t bad not to mention they pull in insane amounts of money. Also Syracuse and Kentucky on the Basketball side is a dominant 2 to start the conference

I'm pretty sure its based on more than just recent football success

USC has a far better tradition of college football than Oregon and has stronger academics, name recognition and fan base. Oregon has had a nice little run the past few years but if I had to bet on which program is likely to have more longer term football success I think its USC hands down.

I actually think the best three in nor particular order are TSK, HoS and RCR

Interesting comparison between USC and Oregon

USC the #2 TV market, Oregon the #27. USC ranked #23 in academics, Oregon #111. USC has 93rd NCAA titles, Oregon has 18. USC is ranked #3 all time football program, Oregon #43. USC has the #1 bowl winning percentage, Oregon #43. USC has a $3B endowment, Oregon $400M. As for current marketability, when ESPN/Fox made their priority TV picks for football this year, they chose USC 11 times and Oregon 5. Just about any way you cut it USC comes out on top by a nice margin. Hell they even beat them in co-eds with USC ranked #2 and Oregon #11. http://www.popcrunch.com/hottest-student-bodies-the-50-best-colleges-ranked-by-looks-1-10/

Not exactly shocked CU hasnt been picked yet

A few schools are surprising but when you think about an entire sports offering of a school, Colorado certainly hasnt done itself any favors the last six years. The Buffs have only been to one bowl game and no ncaa tournaments since 2006.

TSK has the best football conference. I also like HoS

House of a Thousand Sanctions has the strongest

probably followed by the Sisterhood of the Traveling pants….

There were absolutely horrible selections in there

Thank you

I’m glad you like the conference. Trust me, Colorado would be a VERY awesome addition. But sadly, I don’t see them being a factor until the 9th round. Which isn’t exactly a glowing review… I just can’t point to either football or basketball and value them at this current time.

A good place to tailgate? Travel? No doubt. Hopefully CU gets back on the map soon in both power sports.

I can't knock ya for not taking Colorado

Question is…is it time to take schools like Big East Basketball programs? Or do you stick to the lower tier big level conferences with a more balanced athletic program? I would probably look for South Carolina OK St and Clemson.

BYU is an interesting choice.

Especially now that they are independent.

I'm surprised they are still up

The school has a solid football tradition better than decent basketball, good academic reputation and one of the best/largest fan bases out there. Sure they are into a lot of stuff that most of us don’t subscribe to but I think they are a better choice than at least 16 teams that have already been selected.

i think mizzou will be on there

I don't mean this in a trolling way (ominous I know)

But this exercise is to find out which athletics’ departments are most valued, and outside of football [specifically the 15 year run from 1990-2005] where has Colorado excelled athletically? I’ve heard good things about the ski & snowboard program, but besides them I’m oblivious. It could be that I’m simply not educated or follow those particular sports, or is my ignorance of other Colorado sports grounded more in the fact none are particularly noteworthy?

by chowder on Jun 30, 2011 4:07 PM MDT reply actions

well, you're kind of right

like Bob said up above I’m not really surprised we haven’t been picked yet either. Despite what the official criteria may be football obviously rules and our football reputation has taken a meteoric plunge recently. All of the schools picked that have worse football programs than we do have much stronger men’s basketball programs.

To answer your question though, we do have 24 national championships (which I’m sure is more that lots of the schools picked already) but 18 are in skiing (there is no such thing as NCAA snowboarding! how dare you!) and 5 in cross country, so obviously no one cares about those. Other than that our sports aren’t very good. Women’s b-ball used to be pretty good but not anymore, and hopefully our best times are ahead in men’s basketball.

We definitely should be picked eventually if they are truly factoring in things that the USC guy mentioned above. We’re in a big TV market and are one of the most televised teams over the last 20 years, our academics are good, our co-eds are ranked fairly highly (I think?), and despite our recent struggles we’re still 16th all-time in football wins.

It's more free form than that.

It’s how would you set up your conference. It could have been best athletics, like you mention above, but it also could have been best party schools, best road trip locations, etc…

For example, I wouldn’t want Texas Tech in my conference in any round, because I wouldn’t ever want to travel to Lubbock. I’ve been there, not to keen on going back.

then we should get picked soon

cause we certainly check all those boxes (good college town, party school, etc.)

I’m glad you mentioned Texas Tech because that is a school I was keeping my eye out for. If they get picked ahead of us (or at all) this whole excercise loses all it’s credibility because then it is obviously only about recent success in football. They have 1 national championship ever, their city sucks, their academics suck, but yeah, they’ve been pretty decent at football the last 5 or 10 years (and despite that never even played in a Big 12 championship game).

No doubt

I second that feeling regarding Lubbock, TT is also one of the ugliest schools ever designed, looks like it was a former prison, I would be depressed if I went to school there.
