Funny is the word Colorado football coach Jon Embree used to describe the first meeting of Pac-12 football coaches earlier this month in Arizona at what used to be the Fiesta Frolic, an annual gathering for college coaches sponsored by the Fiesta Bowl.

Colorado_medium When in doubt, Colorado Buffs schedule up in Pac-12 - NCAA Football - Sporting News - Who has the toughest schedule in the Pac-12? The Buffaloes do of course.

A quick look at how Colorado's 2011 nonconference schedule evolved: Before the Buffs moved from the Big 12 to the Pac-12, they were still owed a home game from California as part of a home-and-home series. Instead of getting rid of that game because of the new conference affiliation, CU asked the Pac-12 if the Cal game could be counted as a non-con game. In other words, a league game that doesn't count against the league record.

The Ohio State game came about because the Buffs scheduled a game at Hawaii, which gave Colorado the ability to add an extra, exempt game. Instead of adding a rent-a-win, the Buffs added a game at Ohio State with no return game. The Buffs will get $2 million (from Ohio State and television contracts) to play the game.

Embree and the Buffs are more of an unknown. Recruits might like the history of success in Boulder or the fact that there is a plethora of NFL coaching experience on Embree`s staff, but until the Buffs actually begin taking snaps on game days under those coaches, some mysteries remain.

"That issue has reared its head a couple times, but not as much as you might think," Embree said. "There are some guys who are jersey chasers. They just want to go be on the team and then you`ve got guys who want to go make something happen and be a part of something special. Those are the kids you kind of get a feel for as you go through this process. They`re waiting to see how many offers they get and then go to the highest ranked school at the end. What they don`t understand is college football is cyclical. Where was Wisconsin three years ago?"

6. Colorado (6). As last-place teams go, the Buffaloes should be solid: They'll win a few games at home and, with a senior quarterback (Tyler Hansen), might steal one on the road. They could finish a spot or two higher, but this placement seems most reasonable.
