Discussion Board: Recruiting
Instead of flipping back and forth between threads to talk about recruiting, I thought it might be easier to have an all-in-one message board.
I will keep this list updated as more information becomes available. Thank you Buff'em Up and Jon for starting these conversations (and for providing a prospect list to work with).
As of 11:30 PM Sunday, here is what we know (also thank you to Rivals, Scout and ESPN):

Look for Jonavaughn Williams to be first commit from this weekend
He has a CU in home visit this Tuesday night. Both him and his father came away very impressed with CU. He has 2 visits left, SDSU and Oregon St, but says he is only tempted to visit SDSU.

Hopefully true!

It seems like we have some advantages
I think players like to hear that they will get a shot as freshman to play. I think that Embree seems to be very forthright and people trust what he has to say. It also seems like he will play someone as a freshman if they really show they are ready to play as a freshman (see Henderson). Recruits know they can show their abilities and they wont be automatically redshirted unless they just aren’t ready.
I also like the fact that some of our coaching staff have been on NFL teams and have evaluated and taught NFL players. Hopefully that gives them insight when evaluating younger players and they can identify the things that make players great and build on those. You know that recruits have to like that they can learn skills from guys that know what it takes to move onto the next level. Although there are plenty of coaches around who have been involved in the NFL that don’t have success in college (Neuheisel).
I just can’t wait to hear more news.

Cliff Harris?
Dismissed from Oregon. Considering our youth at the cb position, worth bringing in? A 2013 cb lineup of Greg Henderson, Cliff Harris and Yuri Wright sounds pretty mean.
Watched the video where he was pulled over...
Pretty funny and sad…. Sounds like he wasn’t all that when he did see the field anyway, something about 2 bad plays to every 1 good play. Don’t need those problems here, so no thanks.

Also RB Chris Brown committed to Oregon State
I read somewhere (CU at the Game…maybe?) that we were really going after this guy-his offer list was huge. Too bad. http://rivals.yahoo.com/colorado/football/recruiting/player-Chris-Brown-120287
I know it is an isolated incident

OSU has had successful 'system running-backs' in the recent past though
Who knows? They could’ve told him that he’ll win a maxwell if he plays RB there
Who knows? Maybe they’re right
Oh man and look who is coming to town first of the year
TE JALEN COPE-FITZPATRICK **** http://colorado.scout.com/a.z?s=148&p=8&c=1&nid=4837791 He is a soft verbal to USC tho…
I could see him
starting year 1. Embree would turn this guy into an NFL draft pick w/ Wood or Dillion tossing him the rock. 6-5 as a TE is exactly what we need, and already 250 to boot. I can see this happening.

He has a tough decision to make
Should he go to USC as a backup for 2-3 years (current starter is a Frosh) or come to CU and start right away?
Play for a team that will guarantee good records or take a risk on an upstart program?

Colby Cyburt has said that he will visit (OL, Mission Viejo CA)
we just offered Psalm Wooching from HI as a fullback. Still wish we had offered a couple of other FBs.
Yuri Wright is all over the place. I would call him to Michigan right now, but hopefully he really really likes Tony Jones. I also think we’re in on Rippy, hard. As far as I know, Nico Siragusa is still pretty open, but as far as I know, Kelley and Taylor McNamera are taking visits just to cover their bases. I’d be pleasantly surprised to add either.
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
So. Much. Recruiting news.
Just wish some more commits would follow. Hopefully when I wake up tomorrow Jonavaughn Williams will have committed. We still have to fill at least 10 more scholarships and I would prefer that we don’t have to fill them with random, last-minute offerings.
Current ranking
Scout ranks our recruiting class 8th in the Pac-12, 44th overall
Rivals: 9th in the Pac-12, not in the Top 50 overall…

About the Upland trio
I found this highlight film of their game against Norco who has Scott Starr playing for them (USC MLB).
This Powell #46 kid is a beast! Many pancakes in this game. Actually looks good at DE and smashes the QB! Lots of tackles in the backfield. Having a dominant FB on a team is a huge tool! These coaches know what Brandon Drumm meant in 2001!
Abron #21 – TD runs look good. On the 2nd one, Powell lays out 2 guys. Doesn’t blow me away with speed or quickness.
Mosley #3 – Starts off with a KR TD. Has a big hit from his SS spot. Burns a CB for a TD. I wonder whether he’ll be defense or offense in College. Kind of like him as a Safety
Lawler is legit. He isn’t coming to visit, but we’ll be seeing more of him if he chooses Cal.
In conclusion, this is a good group and it looks like a great school to get some hooks into! I’d love to get Powell!

Agreed on that
The takeaway from watching the highlight clips is that Jagne will play next year as a true freshman. How much, not sure. The highlight reel showed that this athlete possesses some great qualities. He has some SWAGGER!

Another year of growth will help with recruiting
November left me hanging and I’m excited for next year but I really think we’ll be pushing to get more than six win. Of course six wins and some crap bowl game would be outstanding.
Yuri Wright's Facebook status Sunday according to ESPN:
"Pretty boring night last night out here in colorado headed home in a couple of hours can’t wait to get back…"
Take what you want out of this but my guess: Not Good.
Well if he was just looking for a party time we don't need him
Frankly I killed more than a few brain cells in Boulder but if his status revolves around how bored he is and has nothing to do with visiting with the team and coaches, we probably don’t need him.
He is a kid and sometimes I have to remind myself of that when reading about recruits
But I just checked his Facebook page and it looks like he prides himself in trying to look and act thuggish and I don’t think that fits in with what Embree has in mind.
I hate to read into this situation too much
because we don’t know what happened or what was said beyond a Facebook status. I don’t want a partying thug either, I just think it might be a little rash jumping to that conclusion.
All I know is, it sounds like the Colorado/Yuri “fit” may not be there for one reason for another. And if that is the case, we don’t want to force a “doomed from the start recruitment marriage” either (for lack of better terms).
However if he was looking for a party and Embree didn't provide
BRAVO to Embree. Our recruiting must stay clean, unlike in the Barnett era (sorry to the Barnett lovers out there, I’m just not a fan).
His Facebook post was one thing, but you should see his Twitter post!
Same basic message, just more graphic.

what did he say? I don't really do all the social media stuff

"Yeah last night was the worst night man ni***s aint do s**t and that was my last night here"
GIVE UP- At some point, hanging in there just makes you look like an even bigger loser.
hmm
not saying we should pull his offer or that I don’t want him just because of that but the kid obviously has some major maturity issues. you don’t say stuff like that publicly after a team has you out for a visit (even if you had a “bad time”). I honestly hope somebody showed embree this stuff.
Not that I want to defend him
but his twitter feed is locked; in that he has to agree to let you follow him. Not that the internet makes much distinction between semi-public and public…
Not that it changes what he said, it’s really too bad

Really, i seem to have access....
Seems public to me, but then again i don’t really know the nuances of Twitter.

Twitter showed his profile as locked
And to view his tweets (shudder) I had to request it and someone with access to his profile (presumably him) had to approve it.
when did you follow him?
He might have just locked it. I still don’t understand the point of having a private twitter. If you’re someone worth following (ie, known to the public in some capacity), then anything you say will get out eventually if it’s provocative enough. If you’re just some no one like me, why would I bother to protect pictures of what I had for lunch? No one gives a shit.
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
Yea, i was thinking i might have been “grandfathered” in. Maybe if you lock it, it only locks to new people trying to follow. might as well be email at that point?
Nothing new, just more douches trying to convince him to commit to ND or UM….
GIVE UP- At some point, hanging in there just makes you look like an even bigger loser.
yea, if you lock it, it grandfathers in everyone already following
if you think his twitter’s a mess- check out his facebook. Good Lord. No wonder Richardson changes his facebook and twitter every few months.

I wouldn't go that far, necessarily
do you have a twitter? That’s pretty par for the course for a lot of guys, past, current, and future.
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
The silence is deafening
on any possible sanctions on Oregon. Has anyone heard anything on their possible violations and that investigation. During this recruiting period, I would think recruits would be wanting to know the answer to that question. As far as Wright, sounds like a possible Cancer in the locker room. Could he really be that stupid to post that for the public? Yes he could.
by Roaring Fork Buff on Dec 12, 2011 4:05 PM MST reply actions
Food for thought
Maybe the coaching staff is softening up on some recruits after they learn more about their character and attitude. Embre has stated that he is searching for recruits that fits his mold of player. Sounds like they made sure that one recruit had a terrible experience for his last night. Could have been on purpose?
haha
no
that’s one hell of a conspiracy theory. intentionally try to make sure a prospect has a bad time (pretty much our highest rated prospect at that) in order to find out about his character?
Does anyone subscribe
to Scout Buffalo Sports News? Wright “recaps his visit to Colorado”. Just curious what he said. It states he just had a home visit from Notre Dame etc from headlines. Assume he’s gone, just wondering.

Bottom line, show up and play high DI caliber ball, or don’t show up. Oh and while your here please try not to commit any criminal offenses. If we can get those three checked off this list with this kid, or any of our recruits I will be happy.
There was something about RB Ryan Lewis
being offered. If he signed that would be four RBs (not counting Norgard). We seem to be looking at some under the radar type of guys, but I don’t doubt that coach Embree and staff have a good eye for talent. Hopefully we can get some more defensive players by signing day.

If you are a four or five star kid
you can call the shots. This year our best chance at those elite players was to get the instate guys. At this point that hasn’t happened. For that top kid, the promise of early playing time is diminished. They figure they will be playing sooner than later, no matter where they go. We must hope that our staff is a good judge of talent and character, no matter how many stars. I think we saw that with some of the Freshman that stepped up this year and performed. Next year we will have an incredibly young team, led by a quarterback with little or no experience. This is a 3-4 year project.
by Roaring Fork Buff on Dec 13, 2011 8:13 PM MST reply actions
not sure how true that is
Kids favor what they favor, be it competing for championships, early playing time, location, even academics.
Early on, Hawkins nailed some top recruits. Those mostly didn’t work out, but he got them. You’ve got to sell them on what they want and then fulfill what you’re selling.
Frankly, I saw very few true frosh actually perform to the level to which we needed them. Henderson of course, Oliver, Darragh… and then what? A lot of the rest of the freshmen were just needed bodies, and a few performed OK in their limited looks (McCullogh, Daigh, maybe Parker). That’s about it.
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
Washington,
the Freshman Safety, for the most part played really well from what I saw.
Wouldn't mind seeing us bank some schollys
I don’t really know the rules, but i hate the idea of just getting warm badies to fill out the class. Just the feeling i’m statrting to get. Since next yearsmclass will be small, it would be nice to spread it out a bit.
GIVE UP- At some point, hanging in there just makes you look like an even bigger loser.
we'll still have scholarships to give
I think even adding 28 will still leave a 10 player void or so. Of course, I think a few of the current guys deserve scholarships (Ford, Gorman, maybe even Schrock). But I don’t think we need to leave anything on the table. I also agree that we don’t need to add bodies just to add bodies. That’s what we’re left with for the last couple Hawk classes.
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
Off Topic - Classy Move
No Surprise
This guy pulled similar nonsense when leaving Rice for Tulsa. He spent the year saying how great it was to be coaching Rice and how he planned to stay for a while… then he bolted to Tulsa saying it was the job he always wanted… then he bolted for Pitt… and then on to ASU. Good luck ASU fans, he hasn’t been anywhere long enough to build a team. He has always thrived on winning games with the previous coach’s recruits.

I noticed it, but let it go.
I do think that if we can think of around six freshman that performed with our brutal schedule this year, that’s pretty good. We have an easier non-conference schedule, but doubling our win total with our young team is a great goal.

Hawaii has been good to us, including last year with Parker and Asiata. This year nothing so far, what is happening? Cabral’s name now is added to UH’s coaching candidate list. both rivals and scout have him listed now. good pickup, has a pretty nice offer sheet
Ummm, how about some dbs, lbs and ols?
Or are we just going to send the house on every play? We only have one DB recruit but he is a real soft commit and my money is that he winds up somewhere else on NSD, unfortunately. Were the coaches watching a different secondary? We also learned this year that you can’t have too many big uglies either but we’ve only received one OL commitment so far. I’m all for talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but I’m kinda over the 30 smurfs at running back.
Just to be clear...
I think this class is shaping up great but think the focus should now be DBs, LBs and OL.
They feel good about Yuri Wright and Crawley
but I agree their inability or ability to pick up DB’s will make or break this class.
Shoulder to Shoulder
some if these guys on the dl are bigger than we are accustomed to
these are the types of people we need to get
It took all of us working together to fail
What did Wright have to say
about his visit to Notre Dame? Are we still in the mix?

Any update on....
Wright, Crawley, Rippy or McNamara? Haven’t heard much as of late (other than Rippy trying to build his Twitter following).
A lot of it is
Last year there were a number of highly ranked classes (ASU and WSU come to mind) that only got that way because they oversigned up to, like… 35 kids (or something).
That is what I figured
A lot to like about this class but still a bit underwhelming. That said it can’t be an easy sell CU at this point. Get Wright and Crawley and I’ll be much happier.
Also. Chow going to Ha-Vai-Ii. Anyone committed to the Utes worth looking at?
Seriously...
If they sniff the Top 50, this is a win for the coaches. We haven’t been a Bowl Game since before Obama was president and haven’t won one since the Ipod was still the size of a brick, so selling this program to 18 year olds isn’t all that easy. I just wished we had canned Dan 1 year earlier.

I think it has a lot to do with numbers
but the quality of recruits we are pulling in is consistently above average. We are averaging 3 stars, which if we can maintain with a 28 commit class will be impressive.

Ohio State recruiting
So with the bowl ban for Ohio State you can see that recruiting has taken a serious hit… They only have 8 4-star recuits and 1 5-star…… That will teach em!!
GIVE UP- At some point, hanging in there just makes you look like an even bigger loser.
Most of the guys being recruited this cycle won't see the field next year anyway
Bowl ban doesn’t mean sh*t to them
My sarcastic point exactly.
NCAA’s completely useless “punishment”
GIVE UP- At some point, hanging in there just makes you look like an even bigger loser.
I think vacated wins is the most hilariously stupid "punishment" I've ever heard of
Dear son,
you skipped school yesterday. For that, the trip we took to the movies last week is now vacated. Pretend you did not see it.
Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.

Wright, Crawley
and Rippy too, since it’s Christmas. (Siragusa and Powell ?)

Turmoil continues at UCLA
Check out Bruins Nation. Any UCLA recruits to poach?

Adam is reporting the we've asked Manaea to grayshirt
But he’s not too thrilled with the idea.

Just saw that
Kind of disappointing, he looks like a gamer. They must have some other hot prospects on the hook.

Have anything to do with grades?
GIVE UP- At some point, hanging in there just makes you look like an even bigger loser.
always possible, especially since teammate Web is an academic risk
but I tend to think not. He wouldn’t be asked to grayshirt if it was academcis, and he couldn’t really be angry about it, because he wouldn’t have a choice. And academic grayshirts usually come to light in the summer, when all of their grades and test scores come in.

Thought I saw where webb is no longer a commit
I know it was previously contingent on grade imrpovement? but it looks like that ship has sailed…
Manaea
is the top rated DB we have a verbal from. Grey Shirt? That is betting on the come, hope it works.

he always seemed like a really shaky commit to me anyway for some reason
if washington state ever gets around to offering him he’s probably gone.
A little off topic
Interesting article about the “Harvard of coaching”

Needless to say, it’s surprising to see CSU near the top of the list.
sucks that you can't click on a school and see who's on their list

not football recruiting, but still recruiting related:
I can see volleyball struggling to get elite west coast recruits going forward. We lost a top 50 player this year to Nebraska this year who had been committed for 2 years. She said it had a lot to do with Nebraska getting lots more fan support than us. Last night I watched the CIF-SS championship game, which was on cable. And it was absolutely packed to the rafters with fans. Packed. There were people watching from the walkway behind the endline. The students had cheers. At my high school, the fans basically consisted of parents and me. If we can’t generate some fan support, none of those players would consider CU. Hell, we’d be a step down.

When I was there there was a volunteer band that used to play at the volleyball games
but then one of the band directors got their fewwings hurt and it stopped
I'm going to post up a new disscussion board later w/updates
It’s getting annoying have to scroll down so much
Cal State All Star Game was today
CU recruits participating:
Shane Dillon
Samson Kafovalu
Davien Payne
plus a few guys we’re still recruiting to some degree:
Salamo Fiso
Kyle Kelley
Ray Ford
Dalis Bruce
maybe others
Not much to report really, but… it happened. Dillon didn’t play after getting injured in his last game. Kafovalu looked good at DE and got some time at FB. Payne got blown up by Aziz Shittu. THE END!

add Milo Jordan to "also being recruited"

I assume Dillons injury is not something to worry about?

correct
Not sure what it is, but he gave it a go in practice and just decided not to push it.
