Continued, Discussion Board: Recruiting

Here is an updated list of players who have visited (or will visit) CU who remain uncommitted. Please add your knowledge in the comments below and I will continue to update this list.

Last Updated: 11:20 PM, January 16

Players are listed by highest Rivals/Scout/ESPN rating

TE Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick **** Scout Rivals Will Visit 1/13 Will choose between: Colorado, USC, UCLA, Oregon. Favorite: USC. He has been a "soft" USC commit since June. However, he apparently had an excellent CU visit...

CB Yuri Wright **** Ramsey, NJ, Rivals Scout Visited 12/10. Will choose between: Colorado, Michigan, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Georgia. Favorite: Unknown. The Yuri Wright sweepstakes has been like a soap opera. Many conflicting reports, including facebook/twitter controversy about his Colorado trip (see first discussion board). I don't feel great about this, however who knows at this point. Stay tuned.

OLB Deaysean Rippy **** McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, Rivals Scout Visited 12/3. Will choose between: Colorado, Pitt, West Virginia, Syracuse(?), Nebraska(?) Favorite: Unknown. Rumors are Colorado is recruiting this guy extremely hard. CU’s ace in the hole: His cousin is CU LB Doug Rippy. It's going to be a fight to the finish.

DE Luke Kaumatule **** Honolulu, HI Rivals Scout Will visit 1/27. Multiple offers. Will choose between: Colorado, Stanford, UCLA, Washington. Favorite: Stanford. He has been a Stanford commit since 9/2/11.

OLB Seth Jacobs **** Arroyo Grande, California Rivals Scout Will visit 1/20. Multiple offers. Will choose between: Colorado, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Arizona State, Arkansas. Favorite: Unknown. A few months ago this seemed like a long shot, however he is visiting which mean CU is at least in his Top 5.

CB Kenneth Crawley ****/*** Washington D.C. Rivals Visited 12/3. Will choose between: Colorado, Kansas, Georgia, and Michigan. Favorite: Unknown. De-committed from Tennessee 1/6. He has teammates DE De'Jon Wilson and DB John Walker are committed to CU.

DE Ewing Simmons *** Stockton, California Rivals Will visit 1/20. Will choose from: Multiple Pac 12 offers (unknown). Favorite: Unknown.

WR/CB Jonavaughn Williams *** San Juan Capistrano, California Rivals Visited 12/3. Will choose between: Colorado, Oregon State, San Diego State. Favorite: Colorado. Everything I have read points towards a CU commitment. However, Oregon State just offered and San Diego State seems to be hanging around. Teammate of CU prospect Keith Parker.

S Leo Thomas *** San Antonio, Texas Rivals Visited 12/3. Will choose between: Colorado, Arizona. Favorite: Colorado. Again, everything I have read points towards a CU commitment. He de-commited from Arizona after the coaching change.

FB Psalm Wooching *** Kailua Kona, HI Rivals Will Visit 1/27. Will choose between: Colorado, UCLA, Washington. Favorite: Unknown. Word is CU is really going after this guy, especially since FB Christian Powell went to UCLA. Wooching was originally a UCLA commit, I doubt they are in the running for his signature anymore.

Chris Solomon *** West Covina, California Rivals Scout Will visit 1/13. Will choose between: Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, Nevada. Favorite: Unknown.

CB/WR Jeffrey Hall ***/** La Place, Louisiana Rivals Scout Will visit 1/13. Will choose between: Colorado, Kansas State. Favorite: Colorado. One problem: Academics.

TE Trevor Stevens ***/** Friendswood, Texas Rivals Scout Visited 12/10. Does not hold a CU offer. Will choose between: Colorado, Boise State, Iowa State, Harvard, Brown, Cornell. Favorite: Unknown. He may be Ivy league bound. This guy seems very smart.

CB Ryan Lewis ** Sammamish, Washington, Scout Visited 12/17. Will choose between: Colorado, Utah. Favorite: Colorado…? Utah has jumped in late and he will visit the Utes in January. This is far from set in stone but Colorado did get to him first…

FB Keith Parker San Juan Capistrano, California Rivals Visited 12/3. Unrated. Still does not hold a scholarship offer from any school. Continue to keep an eye on this guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw a CU offer eventually, if not, he could be a “preferred walk-on.” Teammate of CU prospect Jonavaughn Williams.

WR Vincent Hobbs Mesquite, TX Scout Will visit 1/27. Does not hold a CU offer. Does hold offers from: Colorado State, Marshall, Memphis, New Mexico, ULM.

My Top 5

1. Yuri Wright – should start immediately if he’s really the 3rd best HS CB in the nation.
2. Wes Brown – 6’1", 200lbs, 4.5s in the 40. I would think he’d see significant playing time as this is a serious need position. Ranked 17th in the nation.
3. Kyle Kelley – Though we have a ton of D-Linemen coming in this class, the more the merrier & this kid could be the best of the bunch – ranked 13th in the country.
4. Rippy – Cabral has the skills to turn this guy into the next (insert former stud CU LB here). Having an Outland trophy candidate on D can single handedly get you 2-3 wins as it makes everyone around you better.
5. McNamera – I really like this guy and think he would become a Fauria-esque TE under Embree. I just think the other guys above would make a more significant impact immediately.

We should land 1 of these guys if Embree & Co. can recruit. If not, we’re likely stuck in shittsville aka Hawkinsland. If we land even 1, I’ll have some faith. However, Embree & co came in with unknowns in game-day coaching and knowns in being great recruiters. We better land at least 2. More than that, I’ll be very happy.

Great update

Man I am getting excited, haven’t been this excited since we had the Darrell Scott class, so hopefully this isn’t a jinx like that class was, but if we can get Rippy, Wright or Crawley, and McNamera, I will consider this class a huge success. Considering where this team finished this past year.

So far

I feel best about our chances for McNamera. His parents like us and his decision has come down to CU (Boulder, PAC12) or Oklahoma (Norman, Tornadoes). Like I said, I really like our chances!

I feel we have an OK shot at Wes Brown and Rippy. EB is recruiting Brown really hard and a good education is important to him. We have an ace in the hole by having Doug Rippy here, but it’s a tough call. I am also really hoping we flip Salamo Fiso (OV in Jan). That would be a very solid LB class if we got those two.

I feel less optimistic about Kyle Kelley and Yuri Wright. KK seems like a tough one to get from UA and OU is in on him too. Yuri is anybody’s guess. JE is recruiting him hard. I’d prefer Crawley to be honest, just based on character flaws I’ve already seen in Yuri.

Other top targets for me are: FB Powell, S Soloman, DB Bruce, OL Cybert, OL Brostek, WR Williams and LB Dozier

Those are all guys I think we have a decent shot at. If we can get a good chunk of them, this will certainly look like a solid class!

Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick

Embree wants to sign another TE. He was actively recruiting both McNamara and Cope-Fitzpatrick. Now that McNamara is gone, you would have to think Embree will go all out to get Cope-Fitzpatrick. He is a 4 star and will visit CU in January. The only problem: he remains a “soft” USC commit…

JCF or bust

JCF is a force. He could play TE or DE.

If not him, than leave TE alone. We already have Ray and Irwin.

by huckthefuskers on Dec 29, 2011 10:27 AM MST reply actions

I would really like JCF (obviously)

But you’re right, Ray and Irwin are on board. I like both of them a lot. I think Ray is going to be a very talented and productive receiving threat at TE, and I think he could develop into a pretty good blocker as well. And Irwin I think is going to be an excellent blocking TE with the hands to make Defenses regret leaving him uncovered. I really like that duo a lot and think that they’ll be solid Buffs, but JCF could come in and be a Pac 12 star from day 1.

JCF is pretty tight with USC

It would be a big upset if anyone lured him away, from what I’ve read at least.

Norgard and Kelly (from last year)

are early enrolees. Norgard will play fullback for the Buffs. Possibly that means the other FBs on the list weren’t gonna sign here? (or we didn’t want them?)

by nebraskasux on Dec 30, 2011 8:17 AM MST reply actions

Reading the article about Embree

He said he was heading to Hawaii, so I am guessing he will be talking to Wooching along with some of the other kids on the list, I would guess that maybe if they get depth at FB, that Norgard could get a look at LB instead of FB.

I can't imagine that we'd sign more than one FB

but of course I could be wrong. The article on buffzone today is the one that says he’ll be playing FB, did you see that?

by nebraskasux on Dec 30, 2011 8:32 AM MST up reply actions

True, I would agree

Maybe we are going back to the triple option, LOL, but you never know, I think if nothing else, Embree and staff want some size with these kids. Looking at alot of the PAC-12 teams we played, we definately looked small, I think Embree and Co want to get some guys who can beat up the rest of the PAC—12, if that means getting two bad ass FB rather than one, so be it.

This is interesting

Utah commit Kiha Sai was asked to greyshirt and now he has opened his recruitment. He is a 3 star OL, ranked the 5th best player in Hawaii. 6’4" 300 lbs. Apparently he has received interest from Colorado and Arizona but because he committed so long ago (April), he has no other offer besides Utah. I assume that will soon change. I’m always for OL depth.

I am guessing if Utah is asking him to grey shirt, maybe some academic problems

That being said, if that is the case, he may have the same issues at CU, but I agree that getting more depth and size on the OL is always nice.

update on Powell

Upland (Calif.) fullback Christian Powell was close to making his decision a week ago but picked up a local offer and will take his final official visit this coming weekend.

Powell plays both fullback and defensive tackle at Upland but is being recruited primarily as a fullback right now. He already has taken official visits to Colorado, Nebraska, Washington and Texas A&M and will take one more this week.

"I just got offered by UCLA last week," Powell said. "I was actually pretty close to committing to Colorado, but after UCLA offered, I decided to hold off, and I’m taking my final official visit there this weekend. I’m pretty excited, because UCLA is the local school, and my family really wants me to stay close to home.

by Lets Go on Jan 5, 2012 10:30 AM MST reply actions

Interesting on Powell.

He still doesn’t have an offer from us and he was ready to commit to us. UCLA has a soft verbal from FB Psalm Wooching, but he now has scheduled a visit to Boulder on 1/27.

Hmmmm

It seems */ TE Trevor Stevens (who visited last month) doesn’t hold an offer from us. Both Rivals and Scout were reporting he held an offer but I guess both sources have now changed that report. Could this mean Embree feels good about his chances with Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick? I’m pretty sure Embree mentioned he wanted to sign one more TE…

If I was to guess, Embree is going after another TE prospect unknown to us because all reports are saying Cope-Fitzpatrick is probably going to end up at USC.

With Price only being a freshman, and another 4 star QB being signed, i have to wonder what might have been so appealing about UW? Early playing time at QB is highly unlikely.

thats what I was saying too. I don’t really understand what the appeal of that is. You could come to Colorado or another Big Conference schools that lack some QB recruiting and be a star.

Things are about to get real

…real good or real bad. It sounds like many of the players on this list will decide in the next week. The first domino to fall will probably be Christian Powell and…I don’t like our odds now. He loved his trip to UCLA and his Mom wants him to go there too. We will soon see…

by BigXIITDOG on Jan 10, 2012 2:48 AM MST reply actions

Taylor McNamara loved his trip to Boulder and his parents wanted him to come here

and he ended up signing with OU, so maybe this actually plays into our favor!

The next domino hopefully

from that would be Psalm Wooching meeting with Embree in Hawaii and dropping his soft verbal to UCLA.

Others visiting as per Rivals Search

Colby Cyburt 3* OT on 1/20/12 (showing offers from 8 Pac-12 schools, Harvard!, and BC)
Chris Solomon 3* S on 1/13/12 (showing offers ASU, UofA and Nevada)
John Walker 0* CB on 1/20/12 (offers from KU, IU, NW). Seems like a Hawkins-type recruit from this list/ranking. Hope I’m wrong.

Not a big deal.

It’s already came out that Clay Norgard will be playing fullback. With all the players they are still going after and positions that need more depth, they probably shouldn’t use 2 scholarships in one class at that spot. I really liked Powell’s blocking, but Norgard will be our starting FB the next 4 years. Count on it.

Totally agree

Recruiting is going to be different for CU in the Pac12. Just having mountains with snow in the background and a cool college town isn’t going to cut it anymore. We used to out recruit schools like K-State and even Nebraska simply because Boulder wasn’t surrounded by corn for 500 miles. Now we’re up against schools that can offer sandy beaches…. and nightlife… and tan girls wearing bikinis on those sandy beaches…and…lots more bling

by Boulder-96 on Jan 13, 2012 10:04 PM MST up reply actions

next year will bring out the truth

If the coaches can really develop players we will be fine. I would rather have a 2 star athlete (but still have some speed), who has lots of potential unlocked by quality coaching. Some High School coaches just lack certain fundamental teachings. This complicates things on how much potential a player can really have with good coaching. So the rating system is just goofy. We need speed and continue to recruit speed on defense with pass heavy Pac 12. We should be fine if the coaches can deliver and unlock our recruits potential upon arriving on campus. That is why the DB’s in this class are very important, because they need to play right away. Wright and Crawley would be huge. Expect another 10 or more freshman to play next year right away.

by Lets Go on Jan 14, 2012 12:11 PM MST reply actions

no offense, but that’s the rationale offered by every program who lose out on highly rated recruits. Although there is some truth to that, a larger picture of recruiting shows that teams with consistently highly rated recruiting classes are also consistently highly rated in the polls that matter. Although the star system is certainly flawed, over the long haul, those 4 and 5 star kids matter. They are the true difference makers. Otherwise, no one would care about this crap.

And right now, we aren’t getting them. We can rationalize the reasons away all we want, but it isn’t a positive thing. It’s something we’ll always struggle with, because recruiting begins and ends with assistant coaches, and we can’t give them multi year contracts.

Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 14, 2012 1:09 PM MST up reply actions

Agree and disagree

I agree that in the long run getting more 4-5 star kids means more talent and ultimately better team. I think the philosophy is even though some of those kids don’t pan out, there is always a certain percentage that do pan out. And if I had to guess, my guess would be more likely to see a 4-5 star pan out, than a 0 or 1 star kid become all conference/all american. It does happen, but as you said more talent means more room for error, and at the end of the day more wins.

I disagree though on the multi year contract thing, unless that is something new at CU. We had an 8 -10 year run where we were consistently one of the top 20-25 football programs in the nation. We were attracting top college talent, beating other top programs for that talent, and then ushering that talent to the NFL. My understanding is we had the same contract rules back then.

Contracts, coaches, all that aside, bottom line in college football is winning. If you win you get attention from higher caliber players (see Boise State), and if you lose you don’t (see us). Our problem is we did not have a tradition to fall back on when we began to hit the skids in the early 2000’s (which in my opinoin didn’t really happen in earnest until intermural brotha took over). Teams like USC may be down here and there, but they will never be out because even when they stink they get elite talent.

I heard Bienemy say earlier this year that we are not competing with the top teams in our conference for recruits, we are recruiting against the teams directly above us. So we need to win against UA, ASU, UW, WSU, UCLA & OSU. His statement was we take one step up at a time. And it looks to me like we are doing that to a certain extent. Bottom line we win 6-8 games next year and give a good showing in a bowl, we will be in position to take another step. We win 2-5 games and this regime could be in some real trouble. Sorry for the epistle . . .

"We had an 8 -10 year run where we were consistently one of the top 20-25 football programs in the nation"

the no multi year contract law came into effect in the middle of that. And college football has drastically changed since then. There is no doubt that assistants are the best source of recruiting. There is no doubt that good recruits are important to winning. And there is no doubt that CU cannot keep the best assistants when it comes to contracts. It’s why Embree hired a staff full of people with ties to the program/ area. If they’re great recruiters, they’ll get hired away. It is what it is.

Winning will help, obviously, but Adrian Klemm is an outstanding recruiter. He got talent to SMU. Now he’s at Ucla. Those guys will always end up at schools that can give them the most security. We cannot do that.

I’m done arguing about Hawkins, so I won’t address that. The fact is- right now, this recruiting class is shit.

Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.

by dune1980r on Jan 16, 2012 8:54 AM MST up reply actions

I'm not sure

if moms are really against CU. But JCF’s mom shouldn’t be, besides being closer to home, there’s really no reason to attend USC over CU, and I’d argue that college is the absolute best time to spread your wings and get out from mom’s, dad’s, family’s shadow and go do what you want. If you don’t do it then, when will you?

With the beach, babes, and beer, you’re just as likely to become a moron at USC as you are at CU with mountains, babes, and bongs, so any “party school” argument is a wash. And though I have done absolutely zero empircal research to back this up, I would put the number of TE’s CU has put in the NFL over the last 25 years against the number of USC TE’s in the NFL. At least quality TEs. It should come down to, as with any recruit, the “f’it”. Does JCF like Embree, Bienemy, and the other coaches? If it’s a wash as compared to Kiffen, then having your position coach as the Head Coach must account for something.

by BuffulanceMan on Jan 16, 2012 9:30 AM MST up reply actions

No reason?

USC is academically head and shoulders above CU and probably has one of the most impressive networks of alumni anywhere in the world. They take care of their own like no other, especially in CA. Does the typical student athlete care? Maybe or maybe not, but for most that it is a pretty important selling point.

by NYCskibum on Jan 17, 2012 10:32 AM MST up reply actions

Great point

I heard that CU lacks the alumni connection of elite programs. From my experience, private schools generally “take care of their own” better than public school, so that makes sense that USC has one of the best alumni orgs. around.

I’d beg to differ on the academics, however. A complete guess here, but I’d guess that USC’s players and CU’s players receive similar educations at each school, depending on their level of academic interest. Regardless, maybe you’re just saying the USC brand is generally received better nationally academic-wise, than CU?

by BuffulanceMan on Jan 17, 2012 11:28 AM MST up reply actions

Branding

I can’t speak to whether the level of education is actually better or worse for the athletes or any other student. Like most things I’m sure its a result of whatever you are willing to put into it. But the USC brand is certainly viewed better in most fields than that of CU.

Actually

We aren’t very thin on the OL. We signed 5 OL last year (including Nembot).

We probably wont have a Sr starting on the OL next year at all and we have a bunch of Frosh and Sophomores.

We have some bad timing issues with the instate kids this year and Embo couldn’t sell them on immediate playing time.

We are incredibly thin at other positions (which is why we’re loading up at DL). Do your homework.

define "moral character"

Also, remember that these are cherry picked tweets, that’s not just a running stream. That first tweet was about his trip to Boulder, and I didn’t see anything wrong with it at all at the time. Nor do I think there’s anything wrong with it now. Here is a generic version of 90% of high school/ college athlete tweets:

Rise and grind
I would like to fornicate at the moment
man, I’m really hungry

Got home, watched the game. Great win.

Phil, I could go into detail for you if you really want me to define moral character, but I don’t think you really want to hear it. Jon, I don’t know where this kid lives and if he has two, one or no parents. What he is saying should not be considered acceptable. Yes you want him to come to Boulder, because he is a football star. I work with around 60 17 year old kids every day, so I’m not in the dark in how they act in today’s society. I am also a father of a 18 year old daughter at CU, and I would not want him around her as well. If it is true, I applaud Michigan for saying this is not someone we want representing our school.

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 19, 2012 9:20 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

what I am saying is

don’t try to judge moral character by some tweets. Teenagers are idiots. That’s something I know to be true, as the owner of a teenager. It’s all nonsense. Our players tweet some nonsense. Our recruits tweet some nonsense. It does not necessarily say a lot to their moral character. Yuri Wright may very well be an asshole, but it isn’t because of what he tweets. That’s all. I don’t care if he comes to Boulder. My 18 year old is trying to get into CU. He’s an honor student who has taken 3 or 4 AP classes, and he’s still an idiot. I remind him of this on a daily basis. But crude language is not necessarily indicative of the young man. I used to coach little league baseball, and all of those kids (save for mine) are now freshmen in college. They’re all idiots. They’re still good kids.

And I was an idiot when I was that age. And I did OK. A lot of our student/ athletes tweet similar shit. That doesn’t make them bad people. A lot of them are still going to be people we want our kids to grow up to be. I give you: Eric Bieniemy, who was banned from campus at one point.

Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.

Seriously

Thank goodness for Eric there was no twitter/facebook/ect when he was around. He would have gotten into a lot of trouble. I agree, teens are stupid, and should not be judged by each impulsive act in a vacume. Maybe getting dropped from Michigan (and ND) radar will humble him a bit. Not a lot of self aware 18 yr old stud athletes in our world today . . .

This should be an interesting one. But when you are tyring to catch up you do have to take some chances. We had several young men on our mid to late 80’s squads that were not choir boys.

I doubt it

he transferred at a really odd time. It was the middle of the season, so he’s still going to have to sit out another year. At that time, he’ll have 2 years of eligibility and won’t have played in a football game in 3 years. Gotta think we’ll have better options by that point (and if we don’t, Embree’s probably cooked already).

interesting new offer: 2013 QB Devante Kincade from Dallas Skyline

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Devante-Kincade-109745
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wlq-dNGjjU

Interesting for a few reasons. First, he’s a dual threat, and a true dual threat based on looking at his reel. He’s also not very tall (listed at 6’) and plays in a shotgun spread. He doesn’t appear fast or big enough to make a position change, so I’d guess he’s being recruited as a QB. He’s the polar opposite of Wood/ Dillon/ Burnette/ Dorman. He’s got kind of a long delivery that he’ll need to tighten up, but he makes some really impressive throws, even if they’re not necessarily the pro style throws you’d like to see. Nice zip, hit some really tight windows, and throws well on the run.

any thoughts, BigD?

Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 20, 2012 6:34 PM MST reply actions

also got to add, because I complain about it a lot:

That’s a really good highlight reel. It’s short, and it highlights him making good plays, not just showing giant plays where he might not have done much that was impressive. Looks like it was put together by 247 though, so that’s to be expected.

Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 20, 2012 6:41 PM MST up reply actions

Couple of thoughts

When southlake played them in the state semi finals, he was a terror on the defense as a dual threat, has an amazingly accurate arm, but as you said, the mechanics need to improve. Knowing he is a Jr, he will be dominate next year behind Skyline which is really becoming a power in Dallas.

So, i see 3 possibilities
1. Great athletes like this often covert to DB. The QB SLC played in the finals was a one man show who nearly single handedly won state. He committed to ATM as a DB.
2. Possibly we ARE looking for more of a dual threat in a couple of years? 2014-2015 would be his early seasons and we might be exploring the option of going that direction similar to what a lot of the PAC 12 is doing.
3. Not a stand alone reason, but getting known around and getting a pipeline into Skyline is a good thing to do for CU. Skyline generates a lot of D1 talent (Kennedy recruited their heavily for UT).

GIVE UP- At some point, hanging in there just makes you look like an even bigger loser.

by BuffnBigD on Jan 20, 2012 7:25 PM MST up reply actions

1) fair enough. His reel doesn’t show any DB work, so I can’t speak to that. I’ll take your word as gospel.
2) I dunno. I have no problem with recruiting a dual threat. This kid looks a lot like Hansen, frankly. It’s just not what we’ve been recruiting lately. But there’s no reason to change up based on the conference, because it changes who we’re recruiting against. Pac 12 has all kinds of different offenses now, so this will really get really interesting going forward.
3) I can definitely see this.

Look, I've already told Utah to suck it. There's no going back now.
