Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Recruiting (Updated 1/28/11)

Recruiting by position:

QB   With the additions of 3 star Brent Burnette (Jr.) and 3 star Stevie Dorman (Fr.), it appears as though the position has been addressed for 2011. Burnette is already enrolled and should be in competition to start. Expect Dorman to redshirt.

RB   Running back looks to be well covered by the staff. 2 star Rashad Hall from North Carolina visited on 1/21 and committed two days later. He's listed at 6'0, 195lbs and could grow into a bruiser. His coach raved about his speed. Hall was offered by Oregon, Cal, and Washington State so even though his star rating is low, he must be a quality player. CU looks to be the favorite for 3 star Malcolm Creer from California. He visited on 1/21 and apparently really enjoyed the visit and the coaching staff. The main competition for him, Washington, received a commitment from 4 star Bishop Sankey yesterday and has yet to offer Creer. With Speedy coming back, RB seems to be a true team strength. The two possible additions both look to be quality backs. CU could bring in a true fullback, but don't be shocked if one of the LB commitments end up there, especially if Willingham commits.

WR     4 star Devin Lucien from California visited CU on 1/21. He looks to be taking one more visit to Miami before making his decision, which won't be until signing day. His finalists are CU, UCLA, Arizona State, and Miami. 3 star commit Nelson Spruce came in for a visit on 1/14. 4 star Michael Thomas and 3 star Patrick Onwuasor are guys from California that are still possibilities. 4 star jumbo receiver Junior Pomee from California has been offered a scholarship and may take a visit but nothing is scheduled yet. He has only visited Florida to this point, but has a nice list of offers including USC. The Buffs will probably add one or two more receivers to this class (plus Spruce), the question is who?

TE   Not really a need and fairly neglected on the recruiting front.

OL   Giant (rivals has him listed at 6'3, 357lbs!) 3 star Marcus Martin from California is visiting CU on 1/28. He has been a USC commit since 6/13/10. He's definitely big enough to play right away. The Buffs chances may have improved when 4 star Cyrus Hobbi committed to USC on 1/28. 3 star Paulay Asiata from Hawaii visited on 1/21 but he committed to Washington 3 days later. 3 star commit Marc Mustoe visited on 1/14 and 3 star commit Alex Kelley visited on 10/1/10.  A lot of O-linemen are leaving after 2011.

DL   3 star Juda Parker from Hawaii visited on 1/21. He was a difference maker in the Army All American game and appears to be a serious CU lean. He'll announce sometime after 1/28. 3 star Branden Jackson from Pennsylvania was scheduled to visit on 1/28, but no longer appears to be. 4 star DT Todd Peat from Arizona seems like nothing but a long shot at this point. We can use all the talent we can get on the D line and it's a little surprising that there have been no commitments to this point.

LB   CU has commitments from a trio of 3 star athletes. In the middle you have Brady Daigh from Mullen. The two outside guys are KT Tuumalo from Hawaii and Woodson Greer from California. Mullen's 4 star Leilon Willingham visited on 1/14. He has since decommitted from Texas A&M. CU is included in a long list of possibilities at this point including Michigan, Washington, Arizona State, and Central Florida. He looks to be a long shot and the position appears to be addressed, but picking up the top player in the state would make a huge statement about the future of the program. With Beatty and Sipili gone, the possibility of playing early is there for any of the LB recruits.

DB   3 star Sherrard Harrington from Washington DC committed to CU after visiting on 1/14. 2 star Gregory Henderson from California became CU's 10th commitment after visiting on 1/21. 2 star ATH Jermaine Clark visited on 1/21 and committed on 1/23. He was originally thought to be a RB, but rumors have him playing anwhere from RB, FB, LB, or S. He's under the impression that he's playing on the defensive side of the ball. My best guess is safety at his point. 4 star Stefan McClure from California committed to Cal on 1/27. I can't help but wonder if he wouldn't have committed to CU today if Ambrose would have been retained. 2 star Wake Forest commit Will Harlos from Texas has been offered and visited on 1/28. He is a bit of a S\LB tweener with great size (6'4, 200) with great speed. He was exposed to the coaching staff with film from his high school teammate, Stevie Dorman. Under the radar ATHs Kyle Washington from Arizona and Brandon Andrews from California are visiting on 1/28.

K    2 star prospect Will Oliver from California became the 13th commitment on 1/26. He is also visiting on 1/28. It was a bit surprising to see a scholarship used on a kicker, but considering the kicking game over the past couple of years, the Buffs could definitely use the help. He could play right away.

CU has 13 players committed up to this point. That means there will only be 2 or 3 more additions, but possibly more. CU looks to be putting together a class that contributes this coming year, on top of all the guys coming back. Not a bad job considering all the disatvantages this year. Next year should be even better. GO BUFFS!

you can add Kellen Jones to your LB list

Michigan commit (to RichRod) visiting this weekend. Same high school as Kirk Poston from last year’s class.
Also- WR Jafus Gaines, from Houston might be visiting. Being recruited by McGhee

I wonder what Austyn Carta-Samuels transferring from WY means for Adam Pittser

Gotta think that Christiansen will be fighting tooth and nail to keep him

by Phil Fraser on Jan 11, 2011 3:11 PM MST reply actions

I seriously think this hurt our chances.

Playing time seems to be a real deal closer this year. God knows that the QB for Christiansen could put up huge numbers. But then again, would you go to UW in Laramie or CU in Boulder???

by CUJCC on Jan 11, 2011 9:52 PM MST up reply actions

Not just cities

but think about television exposure? How many players are currently in the league from Wyoming vs. CU? I think if he has a chance to start at CU, which I think everyone here would argue he does then I think you have to roll the dice on the buffs.

by NYCskibum on Jan 12, 2011 5:42 AM MST up reply actions

Pittser is a tough call

Colorado is a bigger, better program than Wyoming, but if he stays there he can be “the man.”

I guess it boils down to whether or not he wants to compete for the position? If he has what it takes, he can come in and fight for a spot with the other guys. Or take the Wyoming spot and feel secure.

Jordan Perkins, RB Lodi CA 6' 180lbs

Soft commit to Stanford. Looking to take some visits after Harbaugh’s departure. He’s not that highly rated, but I’ll take anyone Harbaugh would target, and we know he’s got the grades. Get on the horn, Bieniemy!

How we play tonight against KState

will tell us whether the MU game was the MBB version of OU or not. I suspect its not but it’d be nice to see us push the Mildcats to know we can take down OSU.

And a lack of a solid RB really worries me. Would love to see some decent speed behind Speedy in case he goes down.

by BuffulanceMan on Jan 12, 2011 8:35 AM MST up reply actions

I know what you're saying but I don't like the OU comparison

OU was a closer to a fluke. We were behind most of the game caught a couple breaks and pulled out a win

Mizzou we led essentially all game and outplayed them. Alec Burks was the best player on the floor on saturday, not sure you could say that about any of the ’07 football team against OU.

by NYCskibum on Jan 12, 2011 9:12 AM MST up reply actions

considering our front line

and the rebounding margin against MU, I think there’s an argument to be made that, while maybe not a “fluke” per se, we enjoyed some advantages that we’re not likely to see on a game by game basis against the rest of the schedule.

I've read that he's heading to Montana.

1AA so he can possibly play right away. Just like Ochs.

hmm

my family up in missoula would be excited to hear that. I see nothing out there that really makes me think that’s true though…

by nebraskasux on Jan 13, 2011 5:55 PM MST up reply actions

yeah, but I think their source is just a grizzlies message board

and they admit there they don’t really know anything for sure. but hey, good for him if he does, it’s a nice place to play and go to school, and they have great fan support (for a FCS team). it always reminds me of a double-A version of Nebraska. It’s the only game in town. They had some other QB transfer from a FCS team after Ochs too, I think he was from Wazzu.

by nebraskasux on Jan 13, 2011 6:07 PM MST up reply actions

I'm a Montana boy.

I know first hand how huge the Grizz are (unfortunately). I’ve always referred to them as the Florida State of AA. The guy you are thinking about is Justin Roper who once played and started for Oregon.

by CUJCC on Jan 13, 2011 7:10 PM MST up reply actions

yeah, whats up with that?

ESPN is the only site that was still listing Duncan and Alex Lewis as commits. I guess Duncan is now gone, but did the new staff even want those 2 guys? Hadn’t heard anything.

by nebraskasux on Jan 13, 2011 7:43 AM MST up reply actions

Alex Lewis is a keeper.

Not only did Embree honor his scholarship, but he’s beefed up some too. I’m under the impression that Duncan grayshirted because of grades (would explain why Embree would pull his offer while actively recruiting receivers), but Lewis was greyshirted to get bigger and because of the number O linemen that are leaving after the 2011 season.

by CUJCC on Jan 13, 2011 5:04 PM MST up reply actions

did embree pull it?

like I said it was still up on ESPN’s recruiting page

by nebraskasux on Jan 13, 2011 5:51 PM MST up reply actions

yeah Embo definitely pulled the offer

right after he set Sherry free. Never seen anything posted as to why which leads to the speculation. Some of these sites are just late getting the news.ESPN with Duncan, Rivals is still listing DeVaughn Levy as a recruit looking to transfer to CU and he’s been dead for over a month. Sad story.

by mam2jd on Jan 13, 2011 8:26 PM MST up reply actions

are you sure?

Initial reports said that Embree maintained his offer (which was definitely the right thing to do, since he moved to CO and was taking classes @ Front Range), but then reports came that he had to find other options. I never saw a reason why. Leads me to believe that he still wouldn’t qualify and was eager to start playing. I know CU has a policy of not accepting JC transfers w/o an associate’s degree. Maybe it was determined that he would only qualify as that type of athlete, rather than as a high school recruit

by Phil Fraser on Jan 13, 2011 8:35 PM MST up reply actions

well we can never really know

but everyhting I read was that Duncan was told to look elsewhere as he didn’t fit into CU’s plans. Now, there could be alot of different ways to interpret that. Despite the anti-JC approach CU admin usually takes, they apparently have already accepted Burnette and, in the past CU has taken a few guys that couldn’t get in and stashed them at a JC only to bring them back into the fold later. If Duncan’s choice was go the JC route and try to qualify at CU later or pick another Div ! (non-AQ) school and play now, maybe he made that choice. Who knows.

No Nova, Pittser or McKinney?

We could use a QB recruit. Would rather have Sherry than nothing. We can’t get one high school QB commit? Either Wittek, Kessler, Starling or Turner are going to sit. It’s too bad two of them are going to be wasting some valuable time.

Pittser – Wyoming over CU? Really?

by Florida Buffalo on Jan 13, 2011 8:51 PM MST reply actions

He's probably gone.

Both rivals and scout are no longer showing that Pittser is coming to CU for a visit. Between ACS leaving UW and the sweet powers of the Throw It Deep Academy, we’re screwed. Embree must think the addition of Burnette will cover things until the 2012 class, a/k/a the we must get Cyler Miles class.

by CUJCC on Jan 13, 2011 9:25 PM MST reply actions

I'm not sure that's such a terrible thing

IF we offered (and we never offered), we’d be his best offer. As it is, WYOMING is his best offer. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement. I wouldn’t be surprised if Wyoming gave him a take it or leave it ultimatum. “Visit CU and we pull your offer.”

by Phil Fraser on Jan 13, 2011 9:34 PM MST up reply actions

I tend to agree with you.

Hansen has earned to be first on the depth chart right now, but if we have any faith in Hirschman or Burnette for that matter, it makes a ton of sense to go after the big time recruits for 2012 now instead of insisting on just adding a body. I’ve seen the light!

by CUJCC on Jan 13, 2011 9:40 PM MST up reply actions

we have a small class regardless

I’d rather use it on other positions where there’s obvious available talent (and immediate need), rather than burn one on a QB who is our last best option. In that case- it’s even WORSE that we jettisoned Sherry.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 13, 2011 9:54 PM MST up reply actions

We'll be ok.

We have the 3 true QBs and the combo platter of Justin Gorman, Josh Moten, and Harold Mobley (Embree said he’d let him try QB in the Camera soon after he was hired). Throw in a full year of recruiting and the lack of starter quality guys avilable now, and it just makes sense to focus on next year.

by CUJCC on Jan 13, 2011 10:07 PM MST up reply actions

Yikes!

Let’s face it none of the “combo platter” is going to start, ever. That leaves Hansen, Hirschman and a question mark in Burnette. I have always liked Hansen, but he still has a few issues that keep him from being an elite QB. Hirschman has not had the opportunity to prove himself, but does he fit the mold EB is looking for? I could be wrong, but I can’t believe Burnette is the future of Colorado football. I think it’s a need. How many LB’s are we in on? 4 – 5? We currently have at least a dozen on the roster. There has to be a least one QB we could land. What about Foreman? Heck, I would take NeuheIsel.

by Florida Buffalo on Jan 13, 2011 10:40 PM MST up reply actions

Cyler Miles . . . nice

He’d look GREAT in Black and Gold!

new qb commitment

This weekend and until the end of the month is going to be exciting. I am eager to see how solid our new coaching staff is at recruitment. We will know how influential they are on Monday. Let the commitments begin. I personally think we will steal some recruits from other schools. Boulder has a lot of potential. Look what one coach can do with Tad Boyle as an example. First time in history that the B Ball team won back to back against ranked opponents. Coaching is all about getting the players to believe and play at an optimal level. Go Buffs

by Lets Go on Jan 14, 2011 2:23 PM MST reply actions

from Scout recruiting guy:

“McKeesport (Pa.) four-star Branden Jackson will decide on Monday between UNC and Colorado for fifth and final official visit”

Neither programs appear on his list, but it’s not like we need to preserve visits. I believe that we started the new year with around 50 potential visits. Go get him!

Stanford

Just saw on ESPN that Stanford lost their OC, DC, and O-Line coach to Harbaugh and the 49ers.

Do you think that Embo would be able to convince any of those recruits to come to CU? Maybe the CO kid – Brendon Austin?

Nothing Set in Stone

That he’s still committed to ATM is not a shock. And who knows, maybe ATM will sign two 5* LBs in the next two weeks and Willingham will see the writing on the wall and decommit.

Regardless, that so many decent HS players are coming to Boulder before signing day means we’ll land a few more of them and have a nice class with or without Willingham – though it’d be a little nicer with him.

Holy Crap is Right

I’ve watched a lot of football and I’ve never seen someone do a one-handed cartwheel to avoid a tackle, not to mention running oversome and a nice spin move all in a single 50 yard TD option sweep.

That is a PLAYER.

by BuffulanceMan on Jan 20, 2011 8:25 AM MST up reply actions

I always enjoy

stealing recruits from Nebraska. Even if we don’t sign him this week.. as long as he doesn’t go to Lincoln, I’m happy. He seems like a very good downhill runner. On that video, there were a lot of runs that were 1 cut and he was gone. I think those players are much more effective than those who are all about jukes and spins and fancy footwork in HS. Reminds me a lot of Chris Brown or Bobby Purify.

Hopefully Bieniemy can talk him into coming to Boulder for good this weekend and cancelling his Washington trip. That would be ideal! Go Buffs!

I'm just guessing here...

but the Bleacher Report write up above indicates he just started playing football 3 years ago and only received limited carries in his Junior year (second year of playing) because the existing coaching staff ran a scheme that didn’t emphasize his role. An new incoming coach his Senior year witched the scheme to leverage Greer’s talents.

College recruiting is heavily based on performance during a players Junior year. As a result of the above, he wasn’t much to look at during his Junior year. Seems like this is a diamond in the rough kind of find.

Phil & NUsux correct me if I’m wrong.

by Buff-in-CA on Jan 20, 2011 10:30 AM MST up reply actions

yeah, that's right

Also, Pali isn’t a big football school. You’re more likely to get good tennis or volleyball players (or will.i.am) than football players. And his size/ speed combo isn’t anything that would necessarily jump out at you in a camp

This Creer kid's a player

a 2* sleeper. Good balance, extra gear and TOUGH! Look for EB to get him on board.
Wonder what’s the talent level he’s playing against? Looks like a MAN among boys. Haven’t seen a 2* this good since Rodney Stewart and we know he’s not any good . . .

by mam2jd on Jan 20, 2011 7:16 PM MST reply actions

not great

The only real top team they played was Vista Murrieta (the team Tyler Hansen’s dad coaches, incidentally) and they got their asses kicked. He had 9 carries for 54 yards

by Phil Fraser on Jan 20, 2011 7:26 PM MST up reply actions

That helps the perspective

but the kid does have some talent and you know EB will get every last ounce out of him. Problem is he’s still scheduled to take a trip to UW 1/28, unless EB locks him up.

by mam2jd on Jan 20, 2011 11:07 PM MST up reply actions

Only 18

Plenty of these guys don’t grow into their bodies or really mature until their first couple of years of college. Give him a red shirt year and I think he’ll be fine.

Looks like CA cornerback Gregory Henderson

is visiting this weekend. Know anything about him?

by NYCskibum on Jan 21, 2011 11:07 AM MST up reply actions

I do not

but Norco is where Toby Gerhardt’s dad coaches. So, um, yeah- I got nuthin’

Re UW

Me too but I must admit that they are recovering well from their 0-12 season

This weekend's visit

Last weekend it was great to take recruits to a winning Buff basketball game and let them see the fans go crazy in a full house. Does anyone know what the agenda will be when you don’t have that cornerstone event this weekend?

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 21, 2011 5:39 PM MST reply actions

Scout has Rashad Hall visiting this weekend

Rivals has Hall + Jermaine Clark. They’re RBs from the same school, which is weird.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 22, 2011 11:32 AM MST reply actions

word is

They’re recruiting Clark as an athlete (FB, S, etc) and Hall as an RB.

Willingham

Well here we go again! Bleacher is reporting that Willingham has de-committed from A&M, will now visit Michigan but that Colorado is back in the mix. Speaking of mix, is this one mixed up kid, who is advising him? He sounds either lost or is just “playing” the recruiting game. Well, Cabral go find out.

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 22, 2011 2:02 PM MST reply actions

Denver Pst had an article on him today

Nothing mentioned him de-committing but it did say he made the commitment before visiting College Station. Not the best decision. Harrington is apparently sending sending him daily texts trying to convince him to come to CU. Apparently the two became friends on their recruitment trip last weekend.

I wish he'd schedule one

about a half hour in CS should seal the deal for “anywhere but aTm.” Still 4 LBs from such a small class would be interesting. Maybe Brady Daigh can play FB

by Phil Fraser on Jan 23, 2011 1:17 PM MST up reply actions

and Branden Jacksen still to visit

I don’t even consider LB to be that big of need, honestly

by Phil Fraser on Jan 23, 2011 1:29 PM MST up reply actions

Possibly moving a couple?

Maybe Jackson and Tuumalo to DE? Don’t know but that would help with the DL and get some extra speed on the field. Just a thought.

by BuffinCuse on Jan 23, 2011 1:37 PM MST up reply actions

i assume that would be the case

LB is a great spot to pull a FB from, and DE isn’t an immediate need, so we could easily afford a redshirt year (regardless of what happens with Juda Parker). Having seen Greer play several times, I think he could even project at safety.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 23, 2011 1:48 PM MST up reply actions

Willingham

Yes he did de-commit on Wednesday and A&M is out of the running. He is looking for a school and coaches that will “make him a better man.” I would think that Coaches Embree and Cabral et al. would fit that bill. Go get him and establish that the top Colorado kids go to Colorado.

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 23, 2011 12:51 PM MST reply actions

Rumor has it that we might have gotten 3 commits out of this weekend

which includes Juda Parker. I have not seen anything official yet just message board stuff. Joel Klatt did mention this week that there are several impressive commits that have not made their announcements public. Take this all with a grain of salt.

well Henderson is one, Parker would be 2

That would leave one for either Asiata or Lucien, hopefully (and hopefully Lucien)

by Phil Fraser on Jan 23, 2011 2:19 PM MST up reply actions

Package Deal?

Parker and Asiata are best friends, he’s probably the best guess. Still hoping for Lucien as well.

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 23, 2011 3:30 PM MST reply actions

Parker and Asiata

I have the sense that Parker will come to CU and is hoping that his great friend Asiata will come also. For Asiata it is a toss up between us and UW but he knows Parker will not go that way. Still hopeful on Lucien, we’ll see.

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 23, 2011 4:31 PM MST reply actions

UW?

I have to think that we have the upper hand over UW with Hawaiian’s given our coaching staff connections. Does UW have a significant Hawaiian contact on their staff?

by Buff-in-CA on Jan 24, 2011 7:33 AM MST up reply actions

We got the two from NC

Welcome Hall and Clark to the Black & Gold

Also, Marcus Martin, former USC commit is visiting next weekend….

by NYCskibum on Jan 23, 2011 8:39 PM MST reply actions

I am not a math major but....

Seems for a small class of up to 15 we may be throwing out offers/getting commits at a little bit of a high rate. Rivals has us at 12 but we also have a grey shirt from last year. Plus waiting on Parker, Asiata, Lucien, Martin, the two mentioned above and maybe a couple of more (Willingham at least). Could we already be out on Lucien, Asiata (academics), maybe some others?

by BuffinCuse on Jan 23, 2011 9:12 PM MST reply actions

the grey shirt counts toward last year's class

As can anyone enrolling early. Isn’t the JC QB an early enrollee? If so- count him towards last year’s class

by Phil Fraser on Jan 24, 2011 7:56 AM MST up reply actions

Why?

The amount of players you sign each year is determined by how many players you already have on scholarship.

by HUFset on Jan 24, 2011 8:27 AM MST up reply actions

actually, I misspoke

That only matters when running up against the 25 man annual limit. Not the 85 total. So you’re right- it doesn’t matter.

by Phil Fraser on Jan 24, 2011 8:34 AM MST up reply actions

He's excited about CU

Liked:
- All the coaches (Embree, Bien, Kennedy)
- The campus (that the stadium is right there)
- That CU WANTED him and not just needs him
- that CU was one of the first to offer him

Was going to announce on 1/30 but will push back to signing day. Still going to visit Miami for 5th visit despite getting a recent CAL offer. Kentucky no longer in the mix. ASU, CU, UCLA and Miami still in the mix. Wants to play early.

Seems like a well spoken kid who is having a hard time with a tough decision (or playing his cards close).

by SFBuff on Jan 24, 2011 6:08 PM MST up reply actions

The stadium comment

must have been in comparison to UCLA (took a visit there his previous weekend). FWIW, ASU has a similar stadium situation, not sure about Miami. Not sure about Cal either as I didn’t go to the game this year.

Sounds like a chance, though. Maybe 30%?

Carzell Vickers

Does anyone know what happened with us and Carzell Vickers? He was Berglund’s top target at Valor, we gave him an offer and that was it. He has no trips planned anywhere and is a 3 star recruit in our backyard. Is this someone who has fallen through the cracks as we hope for Lucien?

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 24, 2011 6:05 PM MST reply actions

Bumped this back to the top

Keep it up! We appreciate it.

Rumor has it...

Leilon silently committed last night. Juda Parker is also believed to be on board soon since he just got back from a school retreat. Lucien is saying that Bobby Kennedy is the best WR coach he knows and that they have a close bond.

by HUFset on Jan 28, 2011 1:49 PM MST reply actions

I hope you are right.

Willingham would be huge. Parker is almost a must get at this point. Lucien could be starting. These three guys would be a great way to close.

by CUJCC on Jan 28, 2011 3:21 PM MST up reply actions

+1

A Lucien and Richardson tandem would be huge.

Rumor has it?

Where did you get your “rumor has it” ? I would love to get Willingham, as it sends a message that the best Colorado kids go to Colorado. But “silently committed last night”? What does that mean?

by Roaring Fork Buff on Jan 28, 2011 6:43 PM MST reply actions

I wouldn't unnecessarily.....

Question the inside sources some on this board have. I’m not saying i know anything at all about HUF’s claims, but we’ve done some nice sleuthing here before….
