What will it take for Hawkns to keep his job?
I am just curious what everyones opinion is on what Hawkins has to do to keep his job. My heart tells me nothing short of a big 12 title because he has set fire, as he would put it, to a once proud program. My mind tells be he has to get to 8 wins to secure his job for another year. Let me know what you all think through the comments or the poll.

Let's be honest with ourselves...
If Hawk goes 6-6, no vicious blowouts and loses a bowl game valiantly he will absolutely be back because of money issues, particularly if we have to stay in the Big 12 for another year…..Bohn isn’t going anywhere and maybe he shouldn’t be. I’m not happy with the results of Hawkins so far but the rest of CU’s programs seem headed in a better direction than when he took over Tharp’s mess…I’m not too worried about recruitment. We always finish stronger than we start in recruiting. Frankly, i think some of the lower rated classes of the past two years are producing overall better players for CU. Simas, Scott, etc. of the first few years haven’t lived up to expectations or got into trouble with the law. If the Buffs can get on any kind of roll this season, I think we will be solid in recruitment. I also think we haeve a better chance of landing in-state talent this year than last simply because it seems the recruits are more open to stay in-state for college and haven’t committed too early for us to gain traction.
I think 6-6 is a little low
but you may be right becasue of the financials. If a couple of the those losses are embarassing no shows like we have had under Hawkins 6 wins won’t be enough.
Depends on when we move to PAC 12
If we are going next season he needs 8 wins, if we are in fact staying until 2012 then he may be able to stay with 6 but I think that is far from a given. Too much excitement and opportunity around the move to go in with a losing record and hawk
If we are in every game, that'll be a big plus for Hawkins job stability
But we can’t be close in every game and then lose them all. Even if we’re competitive, 5 wins or less and he’s definitely gone. 6 or 7 wins, but big, blowout losses may mean that he’s gone, though I could see him staying if we’re in every single game (especially the Cal, UGA and Nebraska games). 8 and up he stays.

I think 6-6 is my nightmare scenario
If we go 9-3 again, there will be plenty of consensus to dump him. If we go 9-3, we’ll have plenty of consensus to keep him. If we go 6-6, the fans will be split, the administration will be split, the players will be in limbo…
Pro- hey, it’s a 100% improvement
Con- yeah, right back to where we were year two.
If he goes- Players will transfer, probably young guys who contributed mightily to that improvement. We’ll lose recruits (Berglund, for one) without a good enough record (and likely without a big name coach, given our finances) to make up for it…
If he stays- NONE of the fans are excited, even the ones who supported keeping him. Our cash flow situation gets worse, we probably still don’t attract a top flight recruiting class, we might lose young coaches…
nightmare

I feel exactly the same way
as hard as it might be we should probably either root for a great season or a horrible one
oops- obviously I meant 3-9 in the very first god damn line.
jeez, I’m an idiot

kind of Disagree
I think if they clip the hawk then Bohn has to make a splashy hire going into the PAC 12. Just way too much at stake to go half ass into this conference switch. I’m not so sure about the number of transfers either. Anyone who is committing now is doing it because they want to play at CU, not because of Dan Hawkins. You’re always going to get some but my guess is it won’t be until after the player decides hw won;t be fitting in (insert coaches name here) scheme. Hopefully none of this will be an issue…..but ho knows.
Now the fun part. What big name coaches are likely available out there that might be interested anyway?
Les Miles
Mike Leach
Lloyd Carr
Also anybody that commits this early is usually a 50/50 bet on if they stay committed to their original choice.
I don’t know about having to make a big splash with a new coach. I for one want to see someone with Buff ties be the next head coach and that sees this as their dream job. That is in a perfect world of course, my second choice would be a high level Pac-10 assistant to get us rolling right a way in the conference switch.
I like your first pick
Where it’s the job someone wants to keep for the next 10 years, instead of seeing it as a stepping-stone to someplace else.
Damn
I just re-read that and realized what a sad commentary it is on college football that I consider a long-term coach as sticking around for 10 years or so.
I don’t care who it is, I just want us to win, and win well (i’m looking at you USC/UF/FSU/Miami/Bama)
It'll be in the Buff Bites
Bit Phil diStefano says a “good bowl game” is his goal, and that likely means 8-ish wins.
I would hope that it is at least 8 wins
But seeing the adminstration work, I am guessing that anything over 4 wins will keep him around.

Bohn isn’t going anywhere and maybe he shouldn’t be
I am glad to hear someone say that because Bohn has done a lot of good things for the department. He can’t coach the players to wins, but he has actually managed to keep the attendance and interest in the football program high during a time when we have absolutely sucked. And like you mentioned, he has tried to improve the basketball programs too, despite the fact that we have always been severely handicapped financially no matter who the athletic director is.
As a fan I think I Hawk needs to win the North and win at least 8-9 games to prove that he has the program going in the right direction. If he can win the Cal game that will look good on him for the Pac 10 switch. But unfortunately the financial situation that has already been mentioned probably means he goes 6-6, keeps his job, regresses next season and then gets fired. If he loses to Nebraska or CSU he better win all the other games.
I watched the rerun of the 2000 Husker game in Lincoln a few weeks ago, when Barnett went for 2 in the final minute a la Tom Osborne’s gamble against Miami in the Orange Bowl. When the Buffs made it you knew he was making a statement not only to Nebraska’s players but their fans. We ended up choking, and on the sideline you could see Barnett about to lose it, you could see how bad he wanted that game. A few years later when the Huskers had Callahan and weren’t running the option anymore, Barnett actually had Klatt running through the Husker D on option plays in the 04 game. That was the kind of thing I loved about Barnett, he understood the importance of the Nebraska game from being here in the 80s when the Huskers were always beating us down. It wasn’t this, “Every game is important” crap that we are hearing now. And he didn’t just want to beat Nebraska, he wanted to embarass them and their fans. We’ve got to see that kind of fire from Hawk, I don’t care if this is the last time we play Nebraska. If I were Hawkins, I’d be picking a fight with USC already. That’s the way it’s done.
Sorry for the rambling posts but man I guess opening day has my blood flowing. Let’s kick CSU’s ass today!
