Dan Hawkins Wants An Extension

Kyle Ringo of the BDC is reporting that Dan Hawkins wants a contract extension to improve "stability and continuity" on the team. I don't want to editorialize too much but how can he possibly be serious? Can he really not see that as fans we need to see something on the field if he even wants to keep his job? He still has another three years left on his contract as it is. This just blows me a way and makes me really question where is head is at.

"In a meeting of head coaches in the Colorado athletic department earlier this summer, a senior staff member asked the Buffs` head football coach if there was one thing the department could do to help his program succeed this season, what would it be? Multiple sources in the room that day told the Camera Hawkins responded by saying the school could give him a contract extension."

Yeah, and Osama wants a nuke too

What reality is he living in? Not a good sign, our Head Coach is dillusional.

The Situation may have a longer career on MTV then Hawkins does in Boulder. I still think we are good for 8 wins…if you add the 3 from last season.

would love some logical talk from Hawk

wouldn’t hurt him to say it has been a tough four years, now going to year five, we need to win and win now.

But to say you want a contract extension when you have three years left on your remaining deal is pretty insane, to be frank. The fans want stability and continuity as well and it is called winning.

Add it to the list of things that Hawkins has said that makes you scratch your head. He better blow CSU out of the water after a comment like this. It better be 56 – 14 to back this statement up.

Really disappointing that he is this out of touch

Maybe this team comes together and wins 8 games (lets hope) but how confident can we as fans be in a guy who is this out of touch with reality. The fact that he can’t sense the frustration among fans and the administration is down right disturbing. I can’t believe he would think it let alone say it. Just amazing.

Unreal

Everyone in the country knows he should have been fired last year and now coming off a 3-9 season – he’s talking contract extension? Is he serious? Does he have any idea how lucky he is to have this job? He’s been a complete failure for 4 years and he wants a contract extension??? Hawk – do us all a favor and step down after the nebraska game. We don’t need this crap heading into the pac 12.

In all fairness it was a really stupid question too

It’s a week before the season and senior athletic department official asks Hawkins what they can do to help? Seems like we have a lot of incompetent folks in the athletic department. “Well, you can get us some more orange slices for halftime. that might help”
I’m trying to think, if I’m Hawkins in a closed door meeting how would I have answered that question.

by Tylersworld on Aug 26, 2010 5:23 PM MDT reply actions

He should be contemplating....

An answer that represents the team. Given the situation, he should be thinking about how to improve the team and invest in them, rather than himself.

“he should be thinking about how to improve the team and invest in them, rather than himself.”

Interesting? Is Dan Hawkins selfish? After seeing all the delay of game calls and disorganization vs CSU last season, I knew he was woefully incompetent. But I’ve never considered him a bad person.

But maybe he is selfish? His current contract takes him thru 7 years in Boulder. If he wants an extension, that would probably put him at a decade. It’s absurd Hawkins would be thinking that far ahead. How about focusing on today and this season you twit.

Denver: 32-32 until we're not.

meeting was actually in June

according to the Camera. That said, you’re right, he probably never thought the comment would be made public and the statement clearly wasn’t meant to be.

by mam2jd on Aug 26, 2010 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree - there is no "right" way to answer that question. He probably gave the most truthful answer.

He’s not going to get an extension, but if they didn’t want the answer, they shouldn’t have asked the question.

Since his job appears to be in jeapardy, I’m sure it makes it more difficult to recruit. An extension (even if it just spread the money out and left the buyout the same, it would be all about the perception) would help sell recruits that the staff they are being recruited by will still be there when they are sophmores and juniors.

by Texas Wahoo on Aug 27, 2010 9:25 AM MDT up reply actions

yeah, his answer wasn't wrong

and please remember that this wasn’t for public consumption. This whole thing seems to have been leaked as red meat for people to crap on Hawkins again right before the season. Here’s the thing- he’s the coach right now. I can’t root for his ouster, because I desperately want the team to succeed.

I agree with your comment 100%

The more telling thing to me was the Bohn said nothing….

Let’s just start the season already!

I wonder if anyone snorted coffee out their nose when he said that.

by DCJ on Aug 26, 2010 8:04 PM MDT reply actions

Hard to believe. I’ve tried to be a Hawk supporter….but this may be the last straw. How clueless can you be?!?

Let’s see how the team does this year. If you can believe all the pre-season hype, it may be that he’s building something special…..could this year be the return to relevance for CU football? Hawk has to prove it to me with the W-L column.

But geez, comments like this make you wonder…..how wacky is this guy?

by HBbuff on Aug 26, 2010 8:28 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

Well there goes all the optimism that had building in my mind for this team. Hawk just reminded how ridiculously insane he is. How can anybody expect to win with this idiot running things.

by lakebuff on Aug 27, 2010 8:47 AM MDT reply actions

what would have been REALLY interesting would have been if his answer was:

“well, you could buy me out.”

Glory glory Man United, AND the other MU, AAAAnd the Leafs. I think I need a drink now.

by Wan Ihite on Aug 28, 2010 4:30 PM MDT reply actions

When do we finish paying off Barnett? Once we finish paying him, we can buy out Hawkins. Can’t do it yet, I guess paying 3 head coaches at once would be too much.

by EShred on Aug 29, 2010 6:39 PM MDT reply actions

Why are we surprised at this?

If there is one thing I can say about this man – he’s consistent on his visions of grandeur (i.e delusions)
but it still made me want to hurl.
and people need more proof for his departure?
No need to waste any comment on bohn except can someone tally up the amount of money he has wasted/spent/given away/deterred in his time at CU? It’s astonishing- I’m still wondering how he is gainfully employed.
