Brooks: Buffs On Track, But Need Time To Refine - CUBuffs.com - Brook's articles always seem like 5 pounds in a 10 pound bag, but this one especially so. It covers Thursday's closed scrimmage, and has lots of good info.
CU conducted its second major scrimmage of fall camp on Thursday at Folsom Field. This one featured game conditions, and afterwards coaches were glad the season-opener isn't scheduled for another couple of weeks.
...In summing up Thursday's offensive highlights, Hawkins mentioned few turnovers and penalties, and productivity in "some clutch situations and on the goal line . . . I don't know what our stats were running the ball, but it looked pretty good."
...Junior quarterback Tyler Hansen's critique of the ground game: "I thought it was real good . . . we did some stuff with two tight ends, and it's nice to see that."
CU coaches looking for intangibles during scrimmage | The Denver Post — All Things Colorado Sports
CU coach Dan Hawkins said he will be looking for those "intangibles" today during the second scrimmage of August camp. "We’ve got to play a game, just get it going," Hawkins said, referring to the game-like format of this scrimmage. "Last week’s scrimmage was kind of situational. (This time) guys are just going to have to rally.

CU at Boulder running game highlights football scrimmage - The Denver Post
"It was fun. We had a good scrimmage, I think," junior tailback Rodney "Speedy" Stewart said. "It took us a while to get going. But once we got going, we got some good blocks. We got some good carries. "The holes were crazy," Stewart added. "Even against the No. 1 defense, there were some good holes."
Opponent Watch on Kansas and: The WAC is angry, and they're not afraid to show it. After the Jump.
The commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference says the remaining members aren't likely to make it easy on Fresno State and Nevada when the two schools leave for the Mountain West. Karl Benson says the Bulldogs and Wolf Pack are going to have to pay up on a departure fee and possibly stay in the WAC until 2012 because they didn't meet a deadline to get out of the league earlier. And don't expect any favors.
KU shakes up depth chart, names QB - Big 12 Blog - ESPN - Kansas picked their starting QB, a sophomore named Kale Pick. Another young quarterback for the Big 12 grinder, he beat out a redshirt freshman and a juco-transfer.

Competition heated in CU Buffs secondary - Buffzone
The numbers aren`t adding up in the Colorado secondary. Could it be defensive coaches plan to play nine or 10 defensive backs on a regular basis, or is it more likely the public praise young players are receiving from coaches is calculated to keep them coming back for more?
Buffs QB Hawkins: CU wins 'most important` - Buffzone
Cody Hawkins wants to be the starting quarterback at Colorado again this year, but is willing to watch games from the sidelines if it means the Buffs will win more often.

I didn't feel like being productive at work yesterday afternoon
So instead I watched video highlights from practice and the scrimmages on Buffs TV. I simply don’t see a way that we can be successful offensively if Hawkins is the QB. The arm strength just isn’t there, and the ball takes forever to get out of his hand. For us to be successful, we have to be able to stretch the field, and Hawkins can’t do it.
I can see why they may seem close in practice- Hawkins has fantastic footwork in the pocket, while Hansen’s is pretty sloppy. Hansen stares down and locks in on one receiver far, far too often (like, 100% of the time). Hawkins has much better mechanics. Hawkins throws a pretty accurate deep ball.
But there’s no way that translates to wins. It hasn’t for the last 3 years. His overriding problem has never been his grasp of the offense, or his intangibles, vision, or even decision making. It’s always been his physical limitations. And that hasn’t improved.
This constant equivocation and talk of razor sharp competitions is baffling. This isn’t a 6 year old soccer league where everyone needs equal playing time. Giving Hawkins half the first team snaps because he needs to stay “sharp” doesn’t pass the smell test. The ball simply takes too long to get from point A to point B for us to win football games. Hansen has earned his shot, for better or worse. So just name the damn starter.
Wow
Hartigan is #1 in front of West
Ahles is #1 in front of Beastley
Olotoye is listed at strong safety
Daniels is the #2 center (and still too small)
None of the freshmen show up on the TB depth chart, and damn- I still kind of wish Polk was still an RB
I would bet injuries would account for the first two names there
West and Beatty both missed time in Fall camp. I have no doubt that they will get significant playing time, if not their starting positions back soon. But then again, Ahles was right there with Beatty last season two.
Olatoye at SS is odd, because I’m not sure I saw him get any practice time there. I think it might be due to the fact that we have some pretty talented young Corners, but are a bit thin at safety (especially after Ewing was injured).
Daniels at the number 2 C spot means two things. Iltis is now a full-time LG and that Gus Handler is having issues. Handler was solidly the 3rd C after Iltis, but at some point in the Fall Daniels swooped in and bumped Handler to the 4th team.
Givens-Bakhtiari is going to be a tight race to the finish. They’re listed as “co-starters,” so that’s one we may not know til gametime.
And on the freshmen tailbacks: I’m sure we’ll see one of the big guys, but I think we’ll be OK in short-yardage stuff. We added some muscle in the blocking department by moving Bahr and Fernandez to Utility back. I’m not sure we absolutely need the freshmen this season.

do you REALLY think that we're thin at safety?
Safety seems loaded to me. Ussery has moved there, Ham has moved there, Pugh will be there next year, and Terrel Smith is on the come. I almost wish Polk were back at RB. Actually- I totally wish Polk was back at RB.

Maybe not in numbers
But definitely in quality. Yes, Smith looks good there, but nobody else really stuck out to me. Matt Meyer made a few plays here and there, as did Vince Ewing. But guys like Ham and Ussery were just moved there. Pugh can’t play this season, and it looked like he was getting most of his reps at corner. It makes sense (as it did with Burney) to have a guy who’s strong suit is coverage back there at Safety. If he can tackle (and it looked to me like Olatoye could tackle pretty well), then why not?
And I actually really like Polk at Safety. He’s the fastest safety we have, and he looks like he can be a big hitter. I think I like him at Safety rather than at RB. I’m OK with who we’ve got at RB (or at least I’m OK with Stewart and Hildreth).
PS I’ve really enjoyed and appreciated you contributions, insights and comments here at RR, Phil.

Also
Important to note that Orms is both the Nickelback, and the primary backup at the other safety position. So we don’t have quite as much quality depth there as other positions.

Oh, and Patterson and Richardson are listed in sweet Hawk love as co-starters at their own position
I think that’s great. I love our WR groupings. No sign of Darden (X?) or Canty (H?)
I agree.
That’s a pretty awesome two-deep there. I think Darden and Canty (who both looked good) not being in the top 3/4 isn’t a slight on them, but a statement about all the other guys we’ve got there. And we’ll see plenty of them down the road.

Also
I’m pretty sure the back of my head appears in that video.
I would’ve been sitting a few rows down from whoever took it in ’07. I was second or third row for that game, right in that section. I think I saw my backwards hat at the beginning.
Ohh the memories…

Uhmmm...
Did you mean 10 lbs in a 5 lbs sack? 5 lbs in a 10 lbs sack is kind of insulting. But I’m confused by the follow up sentence that the article is chalk full of details. My head is spinning…
Now that the season has begun, I think we need an official Twitter hashtag
I’ve been using #GoBuffs, but I’m open to suggestion. #RalphieReport seems like an option, but it’s long. Same for #ShouldertoShoulder. Cody Hawkins seems to like #colorado, which doesn’t seem specific enough.
talk amongst yourselves…
We're all doing just #buffs
