Iowa State Confronts The Reality Of Conference Expansion

ISU President Dr. Gregory Geoffory and Athletic Director Jamie Pollard have written a letter to their fan base regarding the news swirling about conference realignment.  Give these guys some credit, they aren't blowing smoke. They're being open and honest and telling their fan base the truth:

We believe the Big 12 Conference is the perfect fit for Iowa State University. We are committed to our membership in the Big 12, and we are optimistic that the conference will remain intact. However, we also recognize that the long-term viability of the Big 12 Conference is not in our control - it is in the hands of just a few of our fellow member institutions.

Iowa State and several other members of the Big 12 Conference are especially vulnerable under some of the re-alignment scenarios currently circulating, particularly one involving expansion of the Pac-10. We are doing everything in our power to represent the best interests of Iowa State in these discussions, but we also are sensitive to the huge uncertainty that has been created and recognize that the situation could evolve in directions that are not aligned with our interests.

I have faith in those two

to try and do what they can. You can criticize Pollard for the way he hires coaches and some things that he says, but, he very much knows what he wants to do as far as finances, and Geoffrey knows the place of athletics in all of this.

I certainly wasn't criticizing this move

I think it’s great that he was honest about the situation with the alum’s and fans. People aren’t stupid, they realize what’s going on and what the implications are and he isn’t trying to sugar coat it.

Tough situation for those schools

Feel bad for the fan bases and would hate to be on that side of the table.

I agree with you all

That reads like an athletic department/school administration that actually gives it’s fan base the facts w/o the excuses and that would be a refreshing change in Boulder. I do feel for those teams that might get left out but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves b/c it could very easily end up being CU left out if Bohn and the board of regents (wouldn’t be the first time these people screw up) don’t act appropriately.
