Pac-10 Might Be Texas Free After Rumors of Big 12 Staying Together With 10 Teams

Your thoughts?
The reference is to today's news that Texas appears (FOR NOW) to have finagled its way into controlling the Big12-2, by sharing the big bucks with A&M and OU, but not the others. So, in other words, the "Little 10" would be a trainwreck dominated by UT, heading towards disaster, because of the unequal treatment of the "little guys" by the big 3 in the South. Some are wondering if this was UT's goal all along, but needed Nebraska to jump off the train so it could happen....
Note that this appears to have been Texas' ploy hatched over the weekend to placate the Aggies, and thereby keep them (as always) under UT's domination. Lots of sad folks in Aggieland if this proves to be the outcome, for it seems the overwhelming majority of Aggies wanted to be in the SEC instead of with UT's "sips" (i.e., "tea-sippers").
For CU fans, of course, this would be a great thing, getting to join a Pac12, because with that comes all the actual conference road games and hosted games with Pac10 schools (plus likely Utah), instead of being relegated to a dustbowl pseudo-conference with the Arizona schools, TTU, UT, A&M, OU, and OSU....
However, will the Pac12 be content to stay at 12? As a fan, I hope so.
I wonder how much money CU was told to expect in a Pac16, and if it factored Pac12 finances into its plans? I hope it can afford the better-for-fans Pac12, and be able to compete in it.

I will say again...
The University of Texas has completely destroyed the Big XII Conference and reshaped it into a black hole it can rule with an iron fist
You do know that the Pac 10 does not share their revenues equally either, right?
USC actually gets a larger percentage of the TV money from the Pac 10 than Texas gets from the Big XII.
Do you know where I can look this information up? Thanks in advance.

Correct
however I think the distribution is a little more equitable than the Big XII’s model, and bowl revenues are split evenly (once travel costs are taken out for the participating team).
Good for any possible football success, bad for all the possible money
I like it a lot, as I love the Pac10 and I’m from Oakland, and now I can see Colorado actually play in the Pac10, not some weird amalgamation where we’d mostly be playing the same teams we were before for our conference.
Yes, I know - Texas Wahoo
… but as much as I don’t care for SC, I REALLY don’t care for the tea-sippers in Austin.
Besides that, CU in the Pac12 is just plain better for all concerned.
The Pac16 plan of two divisions that hardly would play anyone in the other division in football was just plain DUMB, and should never have been the plan. If a Pac12 ever goes to 16 teams, I’d hope it would ONLY be if absolutely necessary, and ONLY if pods of four teams were used, with CU in a pod with Utah, ASU, and UA.
Bottom line: CU was SO fortunate that the Texas pols tried to ram Baylor into the mix instead of CU, so that CU’s invite came ahead of any other. Whew!

"Besides that, CU in the Pac12 is just plain better for all concerned."
Although I like Colorado, and will be sad if we don’t play anymore, I tend to agree. Without CU leaving, there is no way the Big XII would have been able to sit down with TV executives before the contract is up in 2015. CU was the push that was needed to make this deal, and could have ended up netting everyone on both sides more money.
Honestly, I think the death of the Pac-16 has more to do with ESPN wanting to maintain their monopoly of college football, than Baylor exerting influence. If Beebe doesn’t get a phone call from a network saying we’ll give you 20-25 mill. The Super-conference arms race begins, and the four conferences that emerge own their networks, leaving ESPN on the outside.
Also, this means we pay a $10 million penalty to the new Big 12
The loss of the annual revenue Texas would have brought plus this penalty makes the deal a little less sweet but their is the point of still probably getting 15-18 million a year which would be double what we received in the Big 12 last year that will obviously help. And, as it has been mentioned, not being coupled with the Big 12 South in the Pac 10 also has its benefits.

CU's penalty - much less than $10 million?
See the TexAgs.com site for a discussion of this. Perhaps CU’s penalty would be much less than $10 million, because it (unlike NU) is not scheduled to be leaving the Big12 next year:

not really
The way the Big 12 bylaws read:
If you leave with at least 2 years notice your penalty is: 50% of the revenue that would be paid out to your school during those 2 years. In 2007, CU received 8 million from being in Big 12. Assuming that is relatively static that comes out to be 8-10 million per year so… about 8-10 million penalty.
For Nebraska they are purportedly giving 1 year notice. There are different ranges in penalties depending on when you leave…. 18 months to 24 months notice = 70% forfeiture. 12 months to 18 months = 80% forfeiture. 6 months to 12 months = 90% forfeiture. 0 Months to 6 months = 100% forfeiture.
So correct me if i'm wrong
Per Big XII bylaws
3.2 Effect of Giving Notice.
If a Member Insttuton gves proper Notce pursuant to Secton 3.1 (a "Wthdrawng Member"), then the Members agree that such wthdrawal would cause financial hardship to the remaining Member Institutions of the Conference, and that the financial consequences cannot be measured or estimated with certainty at this time. Therefore, n recognton of the oblgatons and responsbltes of each Member Insttuton to all other Member Insttutons of the Conference, each Member Insttuton agrees that the amount of revenue that would have been otherwse dstrbutable to a Wthdrawng Member pursuant to Section 2 herein for the final two (2) years of the Current Term or the then- current Additional Term, as the case may be, shall be reduced by fifty percent (50%), with the remander to be dstrbuted to the other Member Insttutons who are not Wthdrawng Members or Breaching Members (as defined below) as additional Conference revenues in accordance wth Secton 2 heren. The Member Insttutons agree that such reducton n the amount of revenues dstrbuted to a Wthdrawng Member s reasonable and shall be n the form of liquidated damages and not be construed as a penalty.
So we don’t “owe” any money correct? We just get half of what our pay out would have been for the next 2 years.

Correct, although some of the money may have been committed
What I don’t understand is aren’t we paying more in the two year deal?
Say we get $10 mill for ‘10 and ’11
50%=$10 mill
If we leave after ’10
80%=$8 mill
Why don’t we just leave after this year?
A&M at a Crossroads ...
Good post on TexAgs site, which sums up the sentiments of pro-SEC Aggies, and also illustrates the cultural divide between the Aggies and the Pac schools: http://www.texags.com/main/forum.reply.asp?topic_id=1640915&forum_id=5
Man I hope the Aggies leave for the SEC
And I also saw the Pac-10 is talking to Kansas now, while I am not a fan of having Kansas in the Pac-10 (I rather it was Utah), I still think it is not a done deal either way. But if Kansas or A&M leaves, I hope that the Pac-10 tells Texas to suck it and go rule it’s own idiotic conference. I also suspect that if A&M leaves for the SEC that Oklahoma may also bolt there (would make more sense) and therby screw Texas again. I am tired of their crap, and I really don’t want them in the PAC-10, they can go play the likes of Baylor and Rice every year, and I will gladly watch CU play in LA, AZ, Oregon or Seattle. I am really happy CU left this crap, let’s hope the other schools in the Big 12 get a brain and jump ship also.

Looks like there may be something to the Texas sticking with the Big XII story. Typical Texas, give me what I want or I’ll take my ball and leave . . . somewhere!
