Buffaloes Thursday (3/18) Scrimmage Report
Bumped from the Fan Posts. Great scrimmage report, thanks for the write up! - JW
Firstly, Scotty McKnight went down with an apparent lower leg injury. I don't know the extent of it, so we'll see if it gets announced at some point. And now that the bad news is out of the way...
OK, onto the things people requested I watch:
Yes, some of the QBs have mustaches. Coach Hawk, Hansen and Hirchman, however, do not. Probably a good thing too...
Next, Tight Ends: Blocking-wise, Deehan and Walters seemed a bit stronger and stouter at the POA. Catching passes, Thornton and Evans looked superb. If those two guys can get a little bigger and stronger, they will both be impact players there. They were only asked to block a little, and neither one was awful, but they've both got some technique stuff to clean up. Running routes, however, they both looked pretty smooth and natural at catching the ball.
Orms in the secondary: He's the real deal. He was everywhere, and I only saw one pass completed on him. It looks like he's basically replaced C. Brown as the nickel corner. He filled in nicely against the run, and made it to the QB on a couple of blitzes. He's definitely not a huge guy, but he is a football player. He looks like he'll be hard to keep off the field.
Hildreth and the other backs: This was tough. The D was playing well, and there wasn't much running room. Hildreth, Nabors and Lockridge all looked okay, but they didn't run that much. Lockridge had one really impressive, explosive run, while Nabors and Hildreth were solid and made a couple of catches out of the backfield. Hildreth actually had a TD catch out of the slot. I'm looking forward to adding the new recruits to the mix this summer.
Punting (and kicking, while we're at it): Grossnickle is still struggling a bit with consistency, but he was mostly good. His first one was a bit weak, but the rest of them were either solid, or really impressive. He had one that just didn't seem to come down. More than half of the coverage team were at or past the returner by the time he fair-caught the ball, and it was of solid length, too. He's got a big leg, and I think he'll definitely be an improvement in the punting game. He also (I believe) went 4-4 in FGs and looked better there than Goodman and Kirkwood.
And now, on to the other stuff:
I love watching the battles in the trenches. It was interesting watching our lines battle it out. The defense was pretty regularly beating the offense, but I don't think that's necessarily a negative statement about our Offensive line. The defensive line looked really, really good. All of the guys down there were quick, active and using their hands well. In the run game, guys like Kasa and Pericak were standing up the guys that were blocking them. And the LBs were quite active. It looks like Sipili, Major, Ahles, Beatty, Rippy and Mahnke are the guys that are ahead right now. They all blitzed at various times, and all looked good in coverage (Major and an Int and Sipili had at least one big deflection). Webb is definitely a thumper who loves contact, and they brought him and Ahles in at Fullback a few times on offense.
And outside, we have a bunch of stuff to be excited about. Obviously our two starting corners are both as solid as they come. And the receivers that were running with the first team are fun to watch. Of course, this depends on Scotty's injury (they had him in the slot, where he's most effective) and whether Simas gets to see the field after his recent incident. Clemons should help us all sleep a little better at night. Will Jefferson also seems to make big plays whenever he's on the field. He's another guy that they'll have a hard time keeping on the sidelines. And speaking of receivers, Coach Prince definitely brings an energy to the sidelines that wasn't there before. He's got all the coaches yelling with him, too. Players seemed more excited and energetic at the scrimmage than any of the practices I attended last summer. And for down the road, Darden is a huge target. He made a couple of plays where he completely walled off defenders with his body to make a tough catch.
Behind J. Brown and Smith, are a bunch of athletic, pretty good looking guys. I know it's not a huge concern for this season, but I think we shouldn't worry about replacing them too much when it gets to be that time. Guys like Olatoye, Vigo, J. Hawkins and Moten all looked pretty good most of the time. They all got beat from time to time, but they all hit hard and made plays. I think they've all got bright futures. And at safety, the top two were Polk and Perkins. Both have good range, and only seem to be getting better.
And if you want to know anything else. Just ask. I'll probably start to forget it all in a couple of days, though, so ask quickly!

I don't know how it happened,
but with that moustache, we just retroactively won all the National championships of the last 4 years. In every sport.

Thanks David
Great writup – got me excited to see this group in action. I hope I can make it to one of the other scrimmages myself.
Thanks for the legwork
I was wondering about Prince myself. He seems to have a good idea of what he wants and how to handle his players.
I’ll be heading up for the Spring game to get a closer look.
Hawkins DOES have the mustache
It’s just so lame that you can’t see it from the stands. He’s grows a mustache like he coaches football.

I'm getting sucked back in....
Thanks for the writeup!
I'm not
sound like it went pretty bad from all the newspaper write-ups. Sounds like the o-line still can’t open any holes for the running backs or protect the QB. Cody throws 44 passes compared to 29 for Hansen. QB controversey starts anew. Just stick with Hansen and let him get comfortable with the 1st team guys!
My prediction is that Cody starts against CSU and throws about 50 passes for 150 yards because we can’t run the ball.
Thanks for the write up
I am discouraged that Cody is getting the bulk of the work at QB, WTF, I guess when the coah knows he can have a team suck ass and still have a job, he will start his son over anyone else. Dissappointing to say the least.

you ever think that maybe Cody is deserving those reps?
This is a completely ridiculous argument that ive been hearing for the better part of a few years now Im not the biggest Cody fan in the world either, but just think about it. When Cody started playing, they did a great job making sure everybody knows that its not Danny’s decision. I’m pretty sure that even if Dan was a corrupt coach who was making decisions solely on his sons behalf, his coaching staff, players, and responsibility to the fan base would make him start who was best. Skill trumps nepotism any day. And before you get off on “Cody has no skill,” think about 2007. That was his year, and we had promise with him, he could just be living up to said promise.
Sorry for going off on you, but two years of conspiracy theories over ulterior motives is too much.

And who makes the hiring and firing decisions around the rest of the staff?
Hawk lost all credibility when he brought cody here to Boulder to begin with. He put everyone including Cody in a no win position in probably the first display of his poor decision making. I don’t care how highly recruited Cody was out of high school it was a decision that common sense tells you shouldn’t have been made. While Hansen isn’t going to save our season it is his team now and he should be getting all of the first team snaps so he knows it and the rest of the team knows it.
After last season, I have given up on Cody having any future in this program
I understand it is not Cody fault, he shows up and competes to the best of his ability, the problem is his ability is severly limited and he has no upside. Hansen to me showed he at least deserves a shot at being the starter if nothing else because he has more upside and athletic ability. What annoys me is they prep Hawkins all last year to be the starter and he stinks it up and Hansen has to blow a red shirt trying to bail them out and looks bad because he didn’t get any reps in Spring Ball or in the season. Now it looks like this will be the same MO this season, spend all the time prepping Cody, sit Hansen to start the season, what for season to implode and then expect Hansen to come to the rescue with no reps. And then it somehow gives coach Hawkins a leg to stand on saying see, my son did just as crappy as Hansen, but I will fail to admit I spent no time getting Hansen ready to play or developing him as a QB.

QB play
The reason Cody had more throws is because he led longer drives. If you keep the drive alive you get more reps. The issue isn’t the coach it’s Hansen. If you went to the scrimmage it was preey obvious that Cody played just as well. It is also the first scrimmage of spring ball and a lot can happen betwen now and September.
I assumed as much
I know he led more TD drives. The numbers just worry me (and I know it’s just the first scrimmage). As a whole our QBs were 51 of 89 for (hold on to your hat) 361 yards. So, we can’t throw deep, we can’t run the ball, what can we do?
I don’t want to offend anyone, but I’m DONE with Cody. I don’t care if he throws a better looking ball or looks better in practice. He can’t stretch the field and he can’t make anything happen with his feet. He’s shown what he can do in games and he shouldn’t even be getting 1st team reps in practice. I’m not saying this is a fact, but just maybe the reason Hansen hasn’t excelled as much as we would of liked in games is that he’s worried he’s gonna get the quick hook, doesn’t get as many reps with the 1st team as a starter should, and is always having to look over his shoulder. Just my opinion, sorry. It would kill me if Cody ended up as starter again this year.

I agree
The bigger concern is neither QB can stretch the field. Although it was Cody who had a really nice 50 yd bomb to Jefferson for a TD. Hnasen has not seperated himself. I hope Hirschman can get in the mix by Fall. His arm looked extremely strong with the few reps he got.

appreciate the report
good stuff, keep it up.
Now we have spring break, but saw on the schedule there’s another scrimmage on April 2.
April 2 — 2:30 p.m. meetings, 4 p.m. scrimmage, pads
I think we are, unfortunately getting caught up in ridiculous arguments here
The biggest problem at QB right now, is that neither Hawkins or Hansen are really all that good. They both are serviceable, but that’s about it. Sure Hansen can make more plays with his feet, but that don’t make me sleep much better at night. I really don’t see too much of a difference between the two, each of them occasionally plays pretty well, but overall they are both entirely average.
I hate being honest with myself, but there it was.
I hope Hirschman can step up. He’s got a great, quick release and a powerful arm. I hope he can wrap his head around the playbook quickly.
DAG
For the most part I agree
but I still think that Hansen “brings a lot more to the table.” Whatever that means.
What’s sad is that we haven’t really recruited a stud QB since who, Detmer? Kordell? We thought Evans was gonna be the messiah but apparently he’s so much worse than Cody and Tyler that he didn’t even get a shot. Let’s hope Hirschman has some skills.
I would tend to agree with your assessment
But I just think we know what we have in Cody, he has hit his ceiling, I think Hansen can at least get better if he gets more reps, but when the coach insists on giving his son reps over Hansen, it makes me angry. Hansen, Hirshmen, or whoever is going to be the QB of the future needs as many reps as they can get, what I don’t get is giving reps to a player that won’t get any better.
