Darrell Scott Attempting To Return To Colorado?

Vic Lombardi has tweeted that Darrell Scott is speaking with Dan Hawkins about returning to the University of Colorado and the CU football team. Personally, I'm apprehensive about the whole situation, but with the thin numbers at running back I would be willing to welcome him back if Coach Hawk feels like he is committed to the team and working himself into shape.

Just got confirmation: Darrell Scott wants back in. The former Buff is talking to Hawk about rejoining the Buffs. I guess he gets a mulligan

** Update - 2/9 2:30 PM **  -  Kyle Ringo is reporting that Darrell has proclaimed this report to be untrue.

Scott told the Camera today he has no plans to return to the program he chose to leave in early November.

"Nope, not at all," Scott said when asked if there was any truth to the station's report. "It is a lie. I don't plan on coming back."

I think they should put it to a vote

If his teammates want him back on the team then it’s fine with me. But what an embarrassing situation for Darrell. Mr. 5-star number 1 recruit has to come back to CU with his tail between his legs because no one else wants him? I would still love to see him turn into the star we all thought he would be, but I have a feeling it will just be more of the same (two carries a game, Hagan on his case more than ever, bad feelings all around).

This is surprising to say the least

I don’t know why he doesn’t look at another non-BCS school, I am sure SDSU would welcome him or someone like that. I just think there would be a lot of bad feelings brought up as soon as things went south.

I think he tried SDSU

and they didn’t want him either. At least I think I remember hearing that.

Remember back when the whole falling out occurred?

There was a comment made by both Scott and Hagan along the lines of the situation getting blown out of proportion and that there was a lot of “He said, She said.” So maybe it really was just a big misunderstanding.

Hopefully things get worked out. It would be nice to add some depth to the backfield.

Yeah we all saw that interview with Hagan

after D Scott left. He looked like he was not a guy who was treated well. So if Hagan is on board, welcome back Mr Scott.

Mixed feelings err, thoughts (man, I sound like a woman talking about feelings!)

Don’t know what to think here…. On one hand we are thin at RB from an experience point of view, and a part of me wants everybody to hug and get back to the awesome recruit he was supposed to be.

ON the other hand, what kind of message would this send to others in the Program about quitting when you don’t like it knowing Hawk will take you back? What about the other recruits we just signed?

Like Nebraskasux said, I’d want to know how the other players (who stuck it out) on the team feel about it. What has changed for Darrell, is he more focused? Is he going to bolt again???

Should be an interesting few weeks.

I will hand it to him, it must take some cojones to go ask Dan for re-instatement

Wow

Hopefully this experience is completely humbling. He went from being a highly sought after, top recruit, to a nothing that not even non-BCS schools wanted. I really hope that this will force him to work harder……

agreed, the only way I want him back is if he earns it

he needs to earn his scholarship again, redshirt next year and prove that he a) is physically ready to perform b) is mentally ready by knowing the playbook and dedicating himself in the film room.

It would make for one heck of a story if he went on to a successful NFL career after this.

Will be interesting to see if Hagan lets him back in.

I'm hopeful

If all those ifs come true, this may be exactly what Scott needed to really take the next step and live up to his potential. A humbled, re-focused, hardworking Scott plus a RB coach who’s no longer hesitant to criticize his #1 recruit may be what’s needed to make this situation work.

Redshirt

I think is the minimum mandatory “sentence” that he must serve if he comes back.

by BuffulanceMan on Feb 9, 2010 7:36 AM MST up reply actions

The Hawk must win now.

Right now the football program is in bunker mentality. If Scott wants to come back and Hawk thinks he can help get W’s he will be playing next year.

I think we are getting ahead of ourselves also…These reports are from anonymous sources. Let’s just say there’s alot of things that need to happen before D. Scott sees the field in black and gold again.

by MinnesotaBuff1 on Feb 9, 2010 9:52 AM MST up reply actions

WOW!

I am not sure if this is great news or somehow just another let down. I think we are all a bit apprehensive about this. I am sure Dan will make the right decision.
Also, I am a bit perplexed about D. Scott not being able to find another school that will take hime. I would think somebody out there is in need of a RB with his talent, ability.
Is is possible for a school to blacklist a guy? Something seems very odd to me about that.

by AlaBuff on Feb 8, 2010 8:19 PM MST reply actions

Look at his track record though

He had 2 mediocre (at best) years, has had injury and work ethic problems and would have to sit a year.

There an’t be very many teams that would want to take that gamble with a scholarship and I don’t think CU released him to very many schools that he wanted to go to

I'm all for his return

As many have already said, he has learned (hopefully) that being a five star recruit doesn’t mean anything unless you put in the work. If the coaches and team are fine with it, than I saw welcome back! We could sure use his reps in the backfield.
Would he have to redshirt? Probably could make up spring classes during the summer.

It can't get much worse....

Can we count him towards this years recruiting class?

by Boo Yah! on Feb 8, 2010 8:33 PM MST reply actions

He's got to dedicate himself to...

working hard and showing everyone that the hype from two years ago was not misplaced. I hope he does, cause we can use him…..but only if he works his ass off and shows the team that he deserves to be given a second chance. He obviously has the natural talent, but I’ll take a Scotty McNight anyday over the Darrell Scott we’ve seen so far. Hopefully he can turn things around….

by HBbuff on Feb 8, 2010 8:47 PM MST reply actions

I pretty much agree with the rest of the comments

I’d like to see him come back, but he needs to earn his way back somehow and make it up to his teammates for leaving them mid-season.

by NoVABuff on Feb 8, 2010 9:12 PM MST reply actions

Sexy but....

Let’s put this in perspective:

Say in your younger days, you were lucky enough to land some dates with the hottest girl in school, knowing that you had obviously “outkicked the coverage.” Things were ok, but not great between you and one day, she up and says, “You know what? I’m breaking up with you. I’m out!”

You are devistated for a few weeks knowing that she is seeking greener pastures and another school with some all-state guy named Rick. But when Rick and his other stud friends don’t find her as hot as maybe you did, she texts you and says, “I was wrong. I still want you,” it’s very tempting. Afterall, she was hot as hell at one point.

But really, wouldn’t your boys lose all respect for you if you let her back in, depsite how she treated you?

No doubt, I’d love to have DScott be the five star sexy guy we landed two years ago. But he’s not, and I don’t think he ever will be. And what message does Hawk send his team if he lets him back in, scholarship in tow, when Kendrick Celestine has to walk on and earn his spot back after very similar circumstances, albeit much less public. I hope Hawk maintains his integrity and is consistent in how he handles these – no doubt he will.

Depends how good the sex was....

And with Darrell it wasn’t that great. Wait a second… that came out wrong!

Look, at this point I’m welcoming him back with open arms. We need the talent and hopefully this experience has opened his eyes to the fact that your decisions and your conduct have repricusions. I am certain that other programs looking to potentially bring him in contacted Hawk and Hagan to ask about him. And, I am certain they were honest with those programs about Darrell’s work ethic and the way he decided to leave the team. That likely explains why no other BCS (or any other) program were interested in him.

Welcome back Darrell. Hopefully you learned a lesson in all of this and are willing to bear down.

by Buff-in-CA on Feb 9, 2010 7:28 AM MST up reply actions

Gotta agree with you.

I think everyone hopes that he will be that big sexy running back that he was touted to be out of HS, but I just don’t think this kid has it. He will never able to reach expectations or even get close. It would be a slap in the face Celestine who left because he had a kid to take care of in Louisianna I think. Celestine wanted back because he knew he made a mistake and the best thing he could have done for his kid was stay and get an education. Scott wants back because nobody wanted him. Hawkins will have to tread lightly regarding this decision.

We don't know the whole story

In fact, we don’t know half of the whole story.

I’m willing to sit back and let the players and coaches sort it out. If they take DS back, then I won’t second guess their decision. It will be up to him to show his fans and his detractors that it was the right decision.

Life Changer

Maybe its just me but I feel like we are always hearing these uplifting stories of young athletes going through adversity and becoming better people for it. Now its not that simple in any case. Some of these athletes bring the adversity into their own lives while others are thrust into adversity overcoming non-the-less. Case in point, Celestine who had a child in La and admittedly immature. He then grew up a little saw the folly of his ways and he asked to return. Now the hope is that having been put through the rigorous process of working to pay one’s own tuition and going to class and putting in time with the team. With Scott, like JustmyOp said, we don’t know what happened. We don’t know if any of the coaches are partially responsible or if this is purely caused by Scott’s overall lack of maturity. That being said, I too have no problem with second chances and would encourage Hawk to accept him back on the team provided several things. Hawkins needs to be sure the Scott truly wants to be a Buff again and make the TEAM better, therefore, he needs to be willing to watch film, extra conditioning, be a good teammate. Then based on the facts of what transpired and who is to blame Hawk can set the conditions necessary for his reinstatement. Lets all hope that Scott embraces any opportunity given to him and we are one day talking about his story of overcoming adversity. Go Buffs!

Scott told the Camera it will NOT happen

I have a feeling this is the last anyone will hear of Darrell Scott. He may just fade away and be a “whatever happened to” trivia question someday.

— he can’t keep grades up if not enrolled.

— hard to stay in shape without trainer and facility – not impossible, but if you weren’t motivated when you had a pass to Dal Ward … ?

- hard to compete with a new crop of younger, fitter, more exciting backs every recruiting class - and remind coaches you are “all that” when you didn’t show it at the last school you attended.

Hey, Darrell, sorry to hear it. But it’s your choide.
Best of luck to you.

hahaha, I thought you were trying to be ironic

It was actually a pretty well placed strikeout if you were trying to be funny.

That being said, and assuming this is true, I wouldn’t be surprised if we never hear Darrell Scott’s name ever again either. This is a Rhett Bomar situation in my mind; the guy has compromised his talent with his mistakes and now he’s about to be a nobody. C’est la vie.

thanks for tip on dashes

This was the second time yesterday that the RalphieReport made me look smarter than I am.

The other instance was after I prepared a heartfelt, lengthy essay on my insightful and witty reasons comparing Kendrick Celestine to Darrell Scott, drawing parallels and pointing out differences and concluding that we should accept Darrell back with the certain conditions, similar to those that were set for KC. I said that DS would have to show he understood what happened, take blame for his part in what went wrong and prove he was mature enough that he would give 100% to the program if given a second chance. That young men becoming adults make mistakes and get bad advice and have too many friends whispering in their ears, and considering all that, Darrell should get an opportunity to rectify the situation, now that he had come to his sense and wanted, really wanted, to be a buff.

But SBNation would not let me post the fanshot. I tried like six times and gave up. Technical errors.
By the time I was at a different computer and browesr, the “it was a lie” version of the news was posted and I was glad for the technical errors that wouldn’t allow me to post earlier.

Luckily, as it turned out. It would have been the stupidest thing on the board today and for some time.
