CU Buffs vs UGA Dawgs October 02
Hey Buff fans!
I’m a Georgia Bulldog fan/grad in ATL, and I’m planning to make the trip to Boulder with a bunch of my fellow slobbering, hairy Dawgs for our upcoming October 02 game. It should be a lot of fun for our fan base, and hopefully for your fans. UGA fans will give y’all a run for the money on the “party school” honors. I think the uniqueness of UGA playing in Boulder will encourage us to bring large numbers just like we did for the Arizona State game in 2008. The Sun Devil fans couldn’t believe how many of us made it out there, and we got along with them pretty well. FYI- Tell your barkeeps to load up on the bourbon because I think we drained Tempe out of the brown liquid. Seriously!
I’ve never been to the Denver area, much less to Boulder. Reviewing the maps of the Boulder/Denver area, it seems as if Boulder is pretty much an exburb, if not a suburb of Denver, so my question is where would you stay for roughly 3 days/4 nights? Should I stick with the big city, Denver, or get into the thick of things near the campus in Boulder proper? A UGA girl I know lived out there for a few years, and mentioned an area of Denver that had some acronym like SOHO in NYC but obviously in Denver. She said the area was a pretty cool place to hang.
Feel free to throw in any “must do” stuff while I’m out there, too. Red Rocks is close by, and is supposed to be pretty inspiring, right?
Also, how easy is it to score tixs outside of Folsom Field on game day in case I get boxed out with UGA’s tix office? Is scalping legal? There will probably be a decent demand for the CU/UGA game (54k seats right?) so what’s y’alls experience with tix prices for decent visiting teams that travel well? $50, $100, $200, $300 a pop?
Anyway, tell Ralphie that the Georgia fans really enjoyed his(?) visit to Athens in 2006. The camera flashes were popping all over the place, and the UGA fans were pretty hyped when Ralphie made his grand entrance. THAT was very cool…..little Uga was trembling with the BIG fella out on the field!
Thanks, and I’m looking forward to it!
Sic’ ‘em Dogs! Woof Woof.

Hey Buckhead, good to hear you will be making the trek to Boulder
I am sure you will get some responses from our group. Hopefully everyone chimes in.
You are right, Denver and Boulder are 35 – 45 minutes apart so not a big trek at all. You will definitely be able to take in both places over four days.
The area your friend was referring to is called LODO. It is the lower downtown area of Denver with a good amount of bars, restaurants and night life. It is definitely the area I would stay if I was coming into town and wanted the big city experience.
I assume a lot of Georgia fans will be staying at the Millennium Harvest House Hotel in Boulder. Very close to Folsom Field. Any area by Pearl Street Mall would be a good place to stay in Boulder as well. That is the outdoor mall that is always a tourist attraction for visiting fans. Tons of bars on this street as well. St. Julien Hotel is a $$$ hotel but is right in the Pearl Street area if you want to stay at a really nice hotel. You can visit Chautauqua Park in Boulder, you are close to the mountains, areas like Estes Park…it is hard not to tell you to stay in Boulder to take in the full experience because it really is a beautiful place.
You won’t be disappointed regardless of where you stay.
As for scalping, there are always people selling tickets outside of Folsom but like you said, it will be a high demand ticket. I don’t think you will pay over $150 a ticket but I wouldn’t expect to pay less than $100 for the Georgia game.

Be sure to stop by Cosmo’s Pizza or the Dark Horse there if you have time and want to eat somewhere nearby.
Cool......thanks1
We a have pretty cool restaurant/bar in the Virginia~Highlands area of ATL called the Dark Horse Tavern……that will be easy to remember! I hope……

Good greasy food to coat, eh?
What is it exactly….a big party palace with food? Several people have mentioned here, and by some Dog people on the Atlanta paper’s UGA sports blog who live out in the Denver area and go to some Buff games.
Thanks!

have you looked into the Boulder Outlook Hotel?
It’s right accross the highway from Folsom, very short walk. I’ve never stayed at any hotel in Boulder but it looks pretty nice from the outside. You’re smart to start early on this though, I don’t know the exact number of hotel rooms in the city or whatever but it always seemed to me that Boulder has very few hotels for a town of it’s size…

no problem
maybe it’s a half mile from Pearl St the actual street but “party central” is probably a mile or two. Still, you can’t go wrong there, very central location. Have a good time!

Party District on Pearl St.
What intersection is the epicenter of party area on Pearl?….I guess the Dark Horse that I’ve been hearing about is near there? Any must do bars or good restaurants? I’m sure there are some good BEEF steak houses there?
Is the Taxi system pretty decent out there?
Hey! I REALLY appreciate y’alls inputs….VERY helpful….thanks!

Pearl St
from 15th down to 11th (I think) is the Pearl Street pedestrian mall. Tons of bars and restaurants down there. Lots of Taxis hang out down on the north end (11th I guess).
The Dark Horse is in a completely different area, over by the Rodeway Inn Novabuff mentioned.

Steak houses
What are the top two primo steak houses in Boulder or other realy good grub? I think we will be taking out my buddy’s cousin who is in Grad School to some dinners. Gotta pay her back for the baby sitting I’m sure that will occur.

I don't know about steak houses
but if you’re looking to go somewhere high-end, I would definitely check out Flagstaff House. It’s on Flagstaff Mountain and overlooks town from about 600 feet up. Their menu changes daily depending on what they have fresh, and they have one of the best wine lists in the world.
Tagged a room at the the Boulder Outlook as well
I’m in business now….thanks man! Huge amount of Dog friends going so I will probably dump the Golden West on some friends, but still eat the breakfast buffet over there to have that good base on the tummy…ha ha!

hmm
it’s been a few years since I’ve lived in Boulder, I’m having trouble picturing the Rodeway in my mind, sorry. Between the Outlook and the Golden Buff I would probably pick the Outlook. It’s right accross from campus so it has nice views of that and the mountains. The Golden Buff is kind of a small old motor lodge-type place right in the middle of a bunch of shopping centers, but I’m sure the rooms are fine. My dad and I always had breakfast at the buffet there on sunday mornings, so I shouldn’t bad mouth it :-)
by nebraskasux on Feb 20, 2010 11:45 AM MST up reply actions
The Rodeway used to be the Broker Inn
I don’t know if it’s switched management, too. The Boulder Outlook is nice.
Thanks NoVABuff!
Looking forward to it………I hope y’all can make the game? UGA fans are very friendly, football crazed, and we like to have a ton of fun so it should be a blast! I hear there is not a bad seat in the house, and the stadium is supposed to be very scenic.

Thanks Irish!
Very informative….thank you! For some reason I’ve heard of Estes Park…I don’t know where, but it is sticking in my mind from somewhere. Good stuff on the hotels…danke! I need to find out where the UGA Alumni hotel is…I’ll post it when I find out, and let y’all tell me if it is cool or not.
I’m flying in with a couple from Miami, we are hooking in ATL, and then out to Den/Bould. We are then meeting a former UGA party bud of mine and his wife from Boston. He has a cousin who lives in Boulder…I think she goes to Grad school out there(?)….so we will have a “tour guide”, at least. We tend to get lost whenever we do these road trips. Oy! : )
It looks like Den Int. is on the NE side and Boulder is on the NW side so about a one hour drive or so?
From what you wrote Irish, I’m thinking Boulder should be ground zero for us. We like to really “feel” the experience of the game/campus. My friend that lived out there always talks about how amazingly beautiful that part of our country is. She also like Ft Collins, too(?)….
Again, thanks for the input….the more from the natives, the better!

Don't worry too much about going to Fort Collins
its a nice place but stick to Denver and Boulder if you have four days. I agree with agulhas78, hitting up the mountains on your stay especially in October would be worth it.
Estes Park is where the Stanley Hotel is where Stephen King’s, The Shining was inspired. That is probably where you heard of it.
From Denver International Airport to Boulder, it is about an hour drive.
I would take one night to hang out in LODO Denver. I think you will like it.

CU alum in GA
As a Buff in the ATL, I went to the Athens game … and Buckhead Bulldog is right, Ralphie (a she, by the way) stole the show from Uga … and the even-then-woeful Buffs almost stole the game from the Dawgs.
FWIW, Buckhead Bulldog, stay in Boulder, either at the UGA hotel for the weekend or at someplace within walking distance of the downtown Boulder mall. While you’re in town, take a few hours and hike to the top of Green Mountain and look down at the views into town. You’ll be glad you did….
You should DEFINITELY extend your stay to get up into the mountains for a few days or more. Early October is usually prime-time for golden Aspen leaves, so you’d be a fool to miss the show (if you have the time).
Here is an idea, CU alum in GA and Irish?
Just spoke to my friend who had lived out there, and she said her parents have a rental home in Silverthome near Breckenridge/Aspen that we could stay at. Looks like about 70mi from DIA, so I would guess about 40-50 to Boulder? So my thinking now is to expand from three days to maybe a 5-7 days. Use the Silverthorne house as a base camp, and then get a hotel down in Boulder for Fri-Sun. Like y’all said, she says that the Rockies are something to behold in late Sept/early Oct.
She said I NEED to hit LODO, as well.
Thanks!!!!!

Silverthorne to Boulder
Is more than a 50 minute drive… I’d plan on somewhere closer to 75-90 minutes, depending on traffic (I-70 can be a zoo) and how fast you like to drive. Keep in mind that the roads through the mountains — even the highways — are a bit more windy that you’ll find down on the plains. Plus, you’ll probably be looking out the window a lot, enjoying the view, and may not want to gun it.
Hope you have a great trip to Colorado!
by highlandsbuff on Feb 17, 2010 9:40 AM MST up reply actions
Dawg, you'll be happy you made a longer trip and used Silverthorne as a base camp ...
… because, whether you catch the aspen trees in all their golden glory or not, the drives you can take to get between Silverthorne and Boulder are gonna amaze you.
One of my favorite ones is on Colorado 9 North from Silverthorne, then East on US-40 almost to Granby, then East on US-34 through Rocky Mtn Nat’l Park (in parts, a/k/a Trail Ridge Road), and then South on Colorado 7 and Colorado 72 (part of what’s known as the Peak to Peak Highway – also a favorite of serious cyclists), to Nederland, then East on Colorado 119 (Boulder Canyon Drive).
If you can swing a convertible rental car, do it. A convertible sports car, all the better!
Nice......thanks!
The convert sounds like a good idea! So maybe a BMW to suck down those mountain roads, eh?
This is beginning to shape up nicely……Hey! With the trees changing colors, are y’all starting to get chilly that time of the year? As I’m sure your are aware, we will coming from a high humidity area, and it will still be toasty down here so I’m wondering if my system will get shocked with the dry air, cooler temps, higher elevation-lower oxygen. Should I start my training in August for this little jaunt : )

Agreed
Do Silverthorne for 2-3 nights, then Denver for Thurs/Fri nights, depending on the length of your trip and your willingness/ability to drink and then Boulder the day of the game. You don’t want to have to travel back to Denver after the game unless you have a sober driver.

That is why I’m planning so far in advance.

Buckhead Bulldog – take it from one who lives here, Oct 2 is a great time to be here! (though Breckenridge is quite a drive away) Have you checked out coloradodawgs.com yet? we have a great alumni TV watching crew that meets at a local bar just down from Coors Field. I’m trying to book a nice hotel near the stadium with a great view of the Flatirons for my Dad who’s coming into town from Gainesville. It’s gonna be rocking, with better weather and much better scenery than Tempe had!

Do us a favor Buckhead
and bring some of those hot southern girls with the accents with you. If you do that, you will have an invite to our tailgate next to the stadium on Franklin Field. As far as what you should do for nightlife in Denver it depends on what you are looking for. LODO is predominantly sports bars. If you are looking for a Buckhead/Midtown experience, stick to the Larimer Area and Market Street. If you need some specifics let me know and I will throw some options your way. I drink a lot, most CU fans have to these days. Looking forward to welcoming your fan base to Boulder.

Trust me my friend…..I’m rounding the posse up. : )
My UGA fieind who has the 2nd home in Silverthrone is loaded with hot sistas from UGA….she already said she was going, and she is the Queen of the crew….ahhhh yeah!!!

Georgia fans
It’s going to be a big weekend at CU. That’s the weekend we’re honoring the 20th anniversary 1990 national championship team. Coach Mac picked the Georgia game because it is symbolic of how CU played the nation’s toughest ranked schedule that year.
Should be a great time. That’s the game I’m looking forward to the most next season.
P.S. Y’all need to go home after the game and tell any Georgia preps you won’t have room to sign how great Boulder, Colorado is. Steer those prospects here instead of Tennessee and your other SEC rivals.

Perfect! Gives us another reason to slam GTech
We can say we are playing the REAL 1990 NC to our lil’ yellow jacket friends at GT. We will run with it and get a lot of misery mileage out of the Techsters.
That does sound like a big weekend, and I’m seeing tick prices going up. I better call in my favors if I get boxed by the AD Bulldog Club tix office from my Bulldog buddies who have more points than me and are not going.
No doubt on moving kids that we can’t sign outta the SEC…..we are surrounded by the enemy(SEC-UT, UF, uSC, Bama, Auburn, hell even LSU is picking off 5star ATL players and ACC- GT, Clemson, FSU,)and it would be nice not to have to compete against those kids.

who's charging this?
your athletic department? Those aren’t in the visitors section anyway? How do they even have those seats? Just wait until single game tickets go on sale at CUBuffs.com. It’ll be like 50 bucks then. That’s insane.
Not UGA AAssoc
It was from the website of my “go to” UGA/concert tix broker here in ATL…..I know they are trying to feed on fear. I just those prices were interesting.
Hey! Speaking of y’all’s stadium, what section do you place the vistor’s fans? I hope to score through the GEEF-Bulldog Club(donation/ticket) office but from what I’m hearing, alot of UGA fans are going……and we run on a point system. I may get blocked out so if I need to go outside and not scalp at the stadium then what section would you recommend?
