RB Demetrius Sumler Is Leaving the Football Program
SUMLER LEAVING: Tailback Demetrius Sumler will not return for his senior season. Sumler met with Hawkins on Monday and informed the CU coach of his decision. Hawkins called Sumler, of San Diego, "a great kid . . . we wish him luck in whatever he pursues." Sumler told Athletic Media Relations Director Dave Plati he intends to graduate in May, then try and enroll in a graduate program whose school might need an experienced running back.

paging Mr. Scott
“Mr. Darrell Scott. White courtesy phone”
Saw your pics on Facebook of what looked like a great Mexico vacation with your girl over Christmas. Despite a few extra LBs, you’ve cleared your head, and the tread is like new. 2008 and 09 is water under the bridge.
Cmon back D. Hawk has no choice but to play you now.
Please?

Definite loss
Didn’t see ths one coming… :(
He was getting playing time and certainly had playing time coming this year, so a little confused on his reasons??? I’m sure we’ll have plenty of “fed up with Hawkins and the coaching staff” speculation, but I think some of his reasons might be unrelated to the state of the program. Is he seriously wanting to play somewhere else for his one remaining year of eligibility?
Or I could be completely wrong, and its ALL about not wanting to be in the Program anymore..
Crap
this isn't the end of the world
not to disparage a kid that’s played hard for colorado, but my guess is he saw the writing on the wall. he’s not going to get much playing time. quite frankly he should be third on the depth chart at best next year.
good luck to him wherever he ends up.
He's a good player.
And if he wants to try to use his last year of eligibility to help him get into grad school, good for him. You have to agree that this is the right decision for him, all things considered.
I’m sure he wishes he got more looks last year and could end his Buffs career on a better note, but these things happen.
Good luck, Demetrius.
Go Buffs.

I don't understand this AT ALL
you guys are saying maybe he was mad that he wasn’t getting more time on the field but I was always shocked that he got as much PT as he did! If Darrel Scott can’t find a decent football program that wants him Summler sure as hell won’t be able to! Besides, he’ll be a 5th year senior, right? He could only play at a 1-AA program anyway, and how many 1-AA schools have graduate programs on par with CU? (I’m sure there are a couple, but not many)
This makes NO sense whatsoever from a logic standpoint (just like Smith and Scott). This is now the 3rd prominent player who apparently hates being a Buff SO MUCH that they’ve just walked away from playing time with a Big 12 school into the complete unknown (Smith apparently has landed on his feet but we’ll see what happens). What the HELL is going on up there?
You really don't know what's going on?
It’s called people running a program into the ground. It’s called saying one thing about accountability and doing another. It’s about not being clear headed enough not to play your own son in front of a clearly better athlete. It’s about not removing players who are underperforming and playing the best player available for God knows what reason. It’s about not changing position coaches who FAIL. It’s about 16-33. It’s about no road wins since 2007. It’s about no Big XII N road wins ever under this coach. It’s about Dan Hawkins. THAT’s what it’s about.

I'm pretty sure if he graduates in May
he won’t have to sit out a year to transfer to another I-A school. I think it is some wierd loop hole the NCAA has. I think this comes up every now and then and the kid doesn’t have to sit out.
Im pretty sure that that loophole went away a few years ago.

not according to CUBuffs.com
If Sumler graduates in May he can play another season at a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school as a graduate student without having to sit out a transfer year.

Weird.
I thought after the kid transferred from Utah to Florida they got rid of it. Oh well.

He's put in his four years at CU and is graduating on time
In a time when basketball players are leaving school to go pro after a year, having someone leave with a year of eligibility left to work towards a graduate degree is a breath of fresh air.

that's all great
really, I mean that, but the guy still wants to play football and he could of at least started on his graduate degree for free here! I’m not mad at Summler for leaving, I’m mad about whatever is going on in the football program that is causing players to make these ridiculous decisions.
Last year
we were thin at WR and loaded at RB going into the season. This year we are loaded at WR and thin at RB. Amazing how quickly things change. I hope Speedy can stay healthy because as much as I think Lochridge has potential, I don’t think he is an every down back. We really need someone for short yardage situations. The door is still open Mister Jones.
Good luck, the titanic will miss you

Parker Orms?
We’ve recruited a couple of players recently who were stellar running backs in high school. The two that come to mind first are Ray Polk and Parker Orms. Both are now listed as DBs. Polk already saw playing time at DB last year and seems to be maturing nicely at that position. Since Orms hasn’t played, I imagine he is less entrenched at DB. What about moving him over to running back if we’re really too thin there?
With respect to the Demetrius Sumler decision, I wouldn’t draw any conclusions about it reflecting a poor opinion of the program. My guess is that he still harbors dreams of playing at the next level and the only way that will possibly happen is if he actually gets more opportunities to carry the ball, and that isn’t likely with Stewart clearly being the #1 back.
Best of luck Demetrius and thanks. We enjoyed watching you.
Polk
Ray is the obvious choice to cross back over but I remember someone asking him back in the fall about coming back to the O after Dscott left and he was like LMAO. He was a very high prospect in that class but I like where he is.
Orms may be the sleeper and if he’s put on any bulk could be a nice grind the clock guy (God, I hope we have an opportunity again someday to grind the clock) and has nice quicks (4.4 -40) and can break some tackles.
The other guy that we have to consider in the mix now is 6’0" – 195 Josh Moten who enters a crowded QB field but was a big time dual threat QB in high school. He was actually Steve Sarkesian’s first verbal when he took the UW job before committing to CU last fall.
Scout Inc has Mullen’s Adonis Ameen-Moore as listing CU and Alabama as his only two schools right now. I personally think this guy could be just what the doctor ordered in black and gold.
Shouldn't count on true freshman and recruits to solve depth problem next year
From what I’ve read, Ameen-Moore is great and he looks like a stud. But being Class of 2011, I don’t think he enters into this discussion. Same thing with Moten. He may be spectacular coming in and could surprise, but it will still be his first year. I just hate to put our eggs into the future recruit or true freshman basket. I think the solution (if there’s really a problem) has to come from somebody who’s already on the team. At least Orms has a year under his belt practicing with the team and getting familiar with the system. If we’re talking about recruits and freshman, Tony Jones looks great.
I remember a long time ago, we had a pretty solid, but by no means spectacular, running back by the name of Lamont Warren. He went to the NFL early and everyone thought he was crazy because his stock wasn’t that high. Turns out, his previously unheard-of backup was Rashaan Salaam. I think Warren saw the writing on the wall when none of the fans did (It actually turned out well for Warren, as he had a decent pro career with the Colts). This probably isn’t a similar situation, but hey, I can always dream…
I wonder if this may entice Mister Jones back to CU
You never know, I hope he has a change of heart.

This hurts
In the Boulder Daily Camera’s article about Sumler departure one commentator struck a cord with me, supposedly he talked with Sumler during Thanksgiving break at a bar on Pearl St. This person wrote that, when asked about what was going on with Dan Hawkins, Sumler replied “f**k him!”. So much for the zen stuff working in Boulder
I wish Sumler well, and am glad that he got a degree, but what is Hawkins doing?
On a positive note, Mister Jones we need you! Come back to your dream school! Same to Spond, we need you too! Come to Boulder, you’ll love it!
by CleBUFFS on Jan 14, 2010 6:51 PM MST via mobile reply actions
Spond is long gone.
And there are emerging questions as to whether M. Jones could qualify academically at CU. I pray that he has a change of heart between now and signing day and puts on that CU cap, but there is that potential hurdle out there with academics.
That is too bad
