Sticky Situation

As all of us already know, our Buffs lost to a under talented CSU Rams last night, 23-17. Dan Hawkins has taken a ton of heat for this and he deserves it. He put himself in a sticky situation and I'd be surprised if he can manage his way out.

1st mistake- Dan shouldn't have ever given Cody a scholarship. I understand it's family and he wanted his son to succeed, but he shouldn't bring family ties into work. It just starts too much drama. Dan of course wants Cody to start, have a winning record, win a bowl game or two, and maybe even make an NFL team's roster when it's all said and done. All of us know however that this is very doubtful. I don't believe Cody is suited well enough to be a college QB.

2nd mistake- Dan shouldn't have given Cody the starting job. I believe from last year that Tyler Hansen proved that he is better than Cody is. Cody has two things on his side though, his dad is the head coach, and he has more experience/ seniority. Cody isn't big enough to play college QB. He had happy feet last night and was afraid to throw the ball. He's just 5'11 and 190 lbs. And if you argue he is big enough, he definitely isn't TOUGH enough. Tyler Hansen on the other hand is 6'1 and 205 lbs. He's just a sophomore so he still has time to hit the weights. Hansen said he will agree to redshirt this season and won't play as long as Cody doesn't get hurt.

3rd mistake- Dan is losing recruits. Mainly who I'm talking about is former WR Josh Smith. Smith wasn't the most talented player, but he was our best receiving option and an extremely electric player. He transfered and said it was because he wanted to be closer to home and a school that had an art major. Bull Crap! He wanted to go to USC for football because he saw that CU was headed in the wrong direction.

4th and final mistake- Dan isn't using his running backs. The Buffs only ran the ball 16 times last night. That's pathetic. And to add to that Darrell Scott only had one carry. Let me repeat. Darrell Scott only had 1 carry! How do you recruit the Number 6 overall player and 1 RB nationally in 2008 and only give him one carry? He must really suck, or our coaching really sucks. I thought the Buffs were supposed to be a tough, run first team. I understand the Buffs were behind for most of the game, but still, you can't be that lopsided and win a football game. Maybe Hawk wanted to see Cody show off his arm. If that's the case, it's going to be a very long, underachieving season for our Buffs.

Granted, I must remind people that Hawk has had big upsets over #21 WVU last year at Folsom Field, 17-14 in OT. Also, in 2007 Hawk upset #3 OU 27-24.

Good post

Gotta disagree about one thing, I feel that the WVU win was blown way out of proportion. This was a 1-1 team that was coming off a game where they got their butts kicked by East Carolina. They were only #21 because they started the season ranked highly based on their success the previous year. It was an ugly game that we were lucky to win against a team in transition that had a really shaky coaching situation at the time. Remember that we didn’t even come remotely close to scoring in the final 55 minutes of the game!! (until the OT field goal) In my opinion the OU win is the ONLY big win Hawk has had in 3+ years, you can only live off that for so long.

Agreed

and Pat White got hurt in the second half. The Buffs defense did a good job at containing him while he was playing though. I was at the game and it was amazing. I only counted it as a big game because it was a big game atmosphere, and after all whether they deserved it or not, they were ranked #21 and had Pat White and Noel Devine.

At texas tech

I thought that was a good win as well but we are living out of the past and is sad we could only come up with one maybe two solid wins in Hawkins tenure at CU.

my feeling on Tech

(and don’t be offended any Tech fans who might see this) is that we SHOULD beat them. Yeah, they have had some good success lately but they don’t recruit any better than us and up till a year or two ago we were a way more prestigious program. The only thing special about them is the crazy offense they run and their mad-scientist coach (who is great, I‘m not bad-mouthing him). Just my opinion. They over-achieve and we under-achieve. Good for them. Sucky for us.

I agree with most, butin all fairness, Hawkins (Cody)

was a pretty high recruit coming out of High School, I am not mad about having him on scholarship, he actually performed well his freshman year, he just has not progressed, and I think that the program needs to get Hanson some time to see what they have, let Cody be a back-up and start learning to caoch, because he will never make any professional football roster (NFL, CFL, AFL, USFL, XFL).

"Fairness to Cody,

about being a pretty high recruit coming out of high school". Okay, BUT, that was 3 years ago, how much progress has he achieved since then? When you can’t run fast enough to scatter your own shit, you ain’t going to make it Pal, NFL,CFL,AFL, etc.!! Cody’s old man thinks he’s got it made, what’s the poor fool going to think when he has to start delivering pizza’s in Boulder on Sat. afternoons, instead of coaching? Huh? Wonder what kind of spin he’ll have on that situation.
