Who would you get to replace Hawkins, let the debate begin!

Wow, is all I can say to describe the game.  When I was watching, I kept thinking, this is a game that will get one guy fired and one guy a hefty contract extension.  I will admit, when Sonny Lubick was removed from CSU I was really disappointed in how it was handled and I figured Fairchild would be out in four years, boy was I wrong.  Conversely, when Hawkins was hired, I thought he would be a good fit for CU, that he would get a great offense going and the defense would again be dominate, I figured he would have a long career at CU, boy I was wrong again.

As I look at the three D-1 teams in Colorado, it is clear CU has the worst football coach of the three, hell he may be the worst football coach of any college team in Colorado.  What amazed me is when CSU was marching up and down the field all I could see was a look of deer in headlights in Hawkins.  No plan, no way to rally the troops, no fire, no passion, just a guy seeing his career as a D-I head coach ending.

I don’t think Bohn will fire Hawkins, it would be political suicide at this point, but I would expect that the boosters will have Bohn and Hawkins gone by the end of the season, unless CU some how pulls off a miracle and wins the Big 12 north.  But assuming that CU again has another disappointing season, I am guessing that we will be looking for a new head coach.  I would suggest getting rid of Hawkins now, so at least a new coach could be named before the end of the season and not lose out on recruiting time.  Which leads to some interesting candidates.

Dave Logan – This would take some brass stones by the AD to hire, but Logan would at least have the respect of the in-state kids.  His ties to CU and the state are obvious and I think he would bring back some prestige to the program.

Mike Shanahan – Wow, who would of thought of this being an option.  What is great would be that CU wouldn’t have to pay him anything much in his first two years, he gets to stay in state and get a paid retirement program.  You know he wants to coach again, the question is will he be willing to go to the college level.

Jon Gruden – Another big name coach, this may be a long shot, but CU seems like a good fit for someone with his character.  I am sure Gruden wants another crack at the NFL, but at the same time, he may want to look at building a dominating college program.

There are some obvious former CU stars like Hagen that may also be in line for a shot, but I think that CU needs to make a big name hire for the next coach.  If they could get someone like Shanahan or Gruden , even if it is for five years, I think it would be a tremendous boost.

That's an interesting idea

I just wonder what his ability to recruit would be, since he obviously hasn’t had much college coaching experience.

Would work long term

But who is going to be throwing and catching the ball for slinging the ball around.

by Rebel14 on Sep 6, 2009 11:47 PM MDT reply actions

Oh screw it

just make Cody coach (that provided me with my first smile of the day, thanks). He couldn’t be any worse and at least then he wouldn’t be playing QB (if you meant player/coach then I take back my vote).

A few good candidates out there imo

Tommy Tuberville- could CU pay him enough? Gotta figure other schools like Louisville or Maryland would love to get him.

Chris Petersen- I think he’s a much better coach than Hawk, but does CU have the balls to get a Boise guy again?

Mike Riley- Probably a lateral move at this point, unless CU offers him a lot more money.

Or gonna go with some mid major “hot name” who will probably just prolong the Buffs shittiness.

one more note

I really really really doubt a NFL guy like Shananhan or Gruden would come back to coach CU unless they throw up $2-3 mill/year.

The thing with Shanahan is he will be getting paid 7 mil a year regardless for the next three

years, so you can get him for free the first three years and then use that salary from the 1st three years to pay him 3 mil a year.

you are delusional

Neither Shanahan nor Gruden will coach at CU. No way in hell…

by Bowlbasaur on Sep 7, 2009 3:32 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah

thats the thing with Riley and Petersen (and pretty much any “name coaches” out there). We would have to shell out big time cash which we don’t have. It’s gonna have to be some up and comer that will sign for cheap.

by nebraskasux on Sep 7, 2009 12:26 AM MDT up reply actions

:(

definitley a hit and miss type thing, taking an unproven up and comer.
kinda like hawkins, who we thought was proven at boise.. but we plugged him into a bigtime school and look what happened :p

Brian Kelly?

Watching Cincy demolish Rutgers right now and wondering if Kelly would come to Boulder? Is it even an improvement for him at this point?

Remember Joe Glenn?

Give him a shot! He’s a great recruiter, coach and spokesman!

No solution right now

My take is obviously we can’t fire him in the middle of the season because there is not another great alternative. Wait the season out and maybe he can suprise us. With a night to sleep on it, Hawkins is not the guy he needs to be canned but right now there is no better solution. We can’t hire another coach while they are in the middle of their season, No, Mike Shanahan or Gruden is not coming to college let alone CU.Maybe a contender or a program that has competed lately but unfortunetly we haven’t.

by Rebel14 on Sep 7, 2009 1:01 PM MDT reply actions

I hate to say it

But I think we’re stuck, money-wise. I don’t think we can afford to buy his contract out, he just got an extension. Both he and Bohn gone at the end of the season? Well, I guess we’ll see.

I don’t think there’s any chance Shanahan would come to CU, nor Gruden. Again, it’s about the moolah, in that CU ain’t gots none.

Sadly, CU looks to be hosed for the next while, barring a miracle.

Hawkins just isn’t the guy. 4 years into the “Hawk Way”, and we lose to CSU at HOME. Boise hasn’t missed a beat. Quite clearly, we grabbed the wrong guy out of Boise.

by AllBroncsallday on Sep 7, 2009 4:09 PM MDT reply actions

Never stuck.

There is always a way to fire a coach. Rich boosters can make a coach go away. Pay his butt off at the end of the season and he’s gone.

Bohn will need to go first. They are tied together.

Clearly, CU cannot afford a big name coach. Therefore, it will need to be an upstart coach from a mid-major or a coordinator from a big time program. Look at assistants from USC, Ohio State, Florida, or LSU. Those coordinators would be dying to start their own program. You could do a lot worse as a first time coach. Great talent at RB and OL. Quarterback situation is dire and the defense is shaky. BTW—all of the assistants need to go.

Whoever mentioned Hagan as a possibility for the HC. Forget it. He may be the reason why Scott and Stewart were limited last night. We don’t know for sure.

by Champ24 on Sep 7, 2009 6:02 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

I would completely clean house, I’m not even sure I’d keep Cabral. Also agree about Hagan, he’s done nothing to warrant a HC job and a lot of the things he says to the media about his RBs really make me wonder about the relationship he has with those guys.

by nebraskasux on Sep 7, 2009 6:28 PM MDT up reply actions

What about Cabral?

I’m still too upset to put too much thought into the future of the Buffs, and I think the chances of Hawkins resigning or getting replaced anytime soon are about zilch. But IF we were in the hunt for a new coach at some point in the near future I would be surprised if Cabral’s name wasn’t on the list of candidates. The reality is that we don’t have the money to lure the likes of Shannahan, Gruden, or other big name coaches, and our lack of recent success will undoubtedly turn many others away. Hiring from within may be a necessity, and from that angle Cabral’s experience, deep commitment to the program, and ties back to the “golden years” of Buff football make him an obvious choice. He may not the be perfect choice, and it could turn out that he’s better suited to position coaching than being a head coach, but it’s hard to see how he’d be any worse than Dan Hawkins.

Oh, and we need to get Bienemy back on the sidelines, whether as a position coach or OC. The fire and enthusiasm he brought to the program is sorely missing.

by highlandsbuff on Sep 7, 2009 4:25 PM MDT reply actions

Bienemy as HC

That could be a possibility of a cheap and well known hire.

by Rebel14 on Sep 7, 2009 7:51 PM MDT reply actions

show us some character Dan

You have pretty much stolen money from the university for the last 3+ years. How about you actually do something for the program and resign so we dont have to pay your buyout. in that case, we may be able to afford someone worthwhile… i like Kelly from Cincy. Guy can coach and has a killer instinct… really i would take a coach with any kind of instincts right now.

by rckymtnbuff on Sep 7, 2009 8:13 PM MDT reply actions

Shanahan or Gruden

beyond the fact that i dont think either would dream of coming to CU, neither has shown they can coach college ball. that is a lot of recruiting trips – other than Carroll, I cant think of any lifelong pro coaches that have had success in college. get someone who shows they can win ( and more importantly recruit) at the major college level. That, or take a wildcard like Major Applewhite – He has proven he can coach offense and I wouldve played for that guy when he was a backup at Texas. Anybody who can show they have a pair. I actually like the idea of Bienamy if he can get some star coordinators

by rckymtnbuff on Sep 7, 2009 8:18 PM MDT reply actions

Bienemy:

I believe Bienemy is a position coach under Neuhisel at the current time. Eric would definitely bring spark and fire to the field, would/could show running backs how smash mouth football is played. As mentioned before on here, “possibility of a cheap hire”, remember, you “got/get” what you pay for!! Too bad Sparrow was given the extension on his contract, but just like Knee-hisel, slugs always leave a trail.

by 49 Fan on Sep 7, 2009 10:06 PM MDT reply actions

If Hawk goes, Bohn must go with him.

What exactly is Hawk’s buyout? Wonder if the added revenue from getting embarrassed in Denver instead would have helped..

Let’s pray csu was a fluke, though I cannot see how it could’ve been. If Dan drops a game to Toledo or Wyoming…the pitchforks will be out.

I wonder if lost ticket sales might start to even out with the cost of the buyout… I like Darian Hagan as at the very least an interim coach. He’s part of the family I feel would do things his own way, and we know he can recruit. Unless we get out own T. Boone Pickens, any good name coach is a dream.

by AndrewJay on Sep 7, 2009 10:38 PM MDT reply actions

Bienemy is with Vikings

Eric Bienemy is the RB coach with the Minnesota Vikings, coaching Adrian Peterson… He has the best run of RB coaching the past few years: Colorado, UCLA, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings… He would be the absolute best coach for this program… D Scott would be pumped… Move Hagan to QB coach, and run some form of the option with Hansen, and then Evans… 9 wins per year, with a stud running game… I think he would be here tomorrow if you asked him!!!

by Eldiabl0 on Sep 7, 2009 11:46 PM MDT reply actions

don't worry about candidates

there will be plenty of people lining up for a chance at the Colorado job.

Those who think people will look at the recent history and be turned off don’t understand the ego it takes to be a college head coach. Also, you have to remember that there are only 120 D-IA programs in the nation, and of those 120 programs, only a small group can realistically say they have a shot at the national title every single season, if they go undefeated. Colorado is one of those programs.

If y’all decide to fire Hawkins, you will be able to hire someone good. Brian Kelly would be an excellent choice, someone who would make other Big 12 programs sit up and take notice.
