Summons Issued For Tyler Hansen and Vince Ewing After On-Campus Altercation

According to CU Independent writer Cheng Sio, QB Tyler Hansen and S Vince Ewing were issued summons by the Boulder Police after a physical altercation early last Friday morning at a fraternity party. Police issued sophomore quarterback Hansen a physical harassment summons and Ewing assault in the third degree.

Ewing has been suspended indefinitely by coach Dan Hawkins and did not travel with the team to West Virginia. Hansen did make the trip but would probably not see action due to being redshirted this year. Hansen's role in the altercation was supposedly minor compared to Ewing. Hansen saw action last year as a true freshman in five games and was in a quarterback battle with Cody Hawkins this offseason for the starting job. The job was ultimately awarded to Cody Hawkins. Hansen has told offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau that he intends to redshirt this year rather than play sparingly and waste another year of eligibility.

Vince Ewing, a redshirt freshman safety, has played on the special teams unit this season. His only statistic on special teams has been one knock down or spring block. Both Hansen and Ewing were part of the 2008 signing class.

Here is what the article said about the altercation that took place last Friday morning:

According to the police report, Boulder police received a phone call at 1:31 a.m. Friday and were dispatched to the Kappa Sigma Fraternity located at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave.

The victim, Jesse Kornblum, a 21-year-old senior geography major, and witness Christopher Marshall, a 19-year-old freshman history major, were physically escorting Ewing out of the party because he attempted to strike an unknown person.

They were pushing Ewing from behind when Ewing turned and pushed Kornblum, who was hired as part of the security staff, back inside the house. Then Ewing struck Kornblum in the jaw with a closed right fist.

Hansen, who was leaving the party, saw Kornblum force Ewing out. Hansen returned to the scene and pushed Kornblum in an attempt to get him off Ewing. When both football players left, Kornblum called the police.

Shortly after police arrived, Kornblum identified Hansen as Hansen walked along 12th Street. Police called Hansen over and Hansen was apologetic and cooperative. He was issued the summons and was released.

As for Ewing, Hansen called his teammate twice in an attempt to get Ewing to turn himself in. Ewing refused to cooperate and both times, Hansen gave his cell phone to police. Ewing hung up before police could say a word.

Ewing was later spotted by an officer and denied guilt. Ewing was taken into custody and transported to the Hill Annex by police. He was issued his summons and then released.

In the report, Kornblum stated he will be pressing charges. Neither he nor Marshall could be reached for comment.

The Boulder District Attorney’s office said Wednesday no court dates have been set at this time.

Once again, this is only in the early stages of the process and neither Ewing or Hansen have been found guilty of any crimes.

I'm guessing Ewing's done for the year

maybe some sort of reprimand or extra wheelbarrow duty for Hansen. If this is all true, I, personally, would suspend Ewing for a couple of games and do nothing to Hansen, but God help them if the guys who got a hold of Sipili and Katoa get their teeth into this.

This story is full of Fail

I think I’m equally annoyed with all parties involved. CU probably has one of the douchiest Greek systems around and I would have imagined the players would have realized that by now.

I can’t believe the “hired security” is pressing charges against an underage student who had been drinking at a party that they let them into? Like I said Too much Fail to go around.

Surprising

but really, these things get so overblown. You’re liable to see at least 3 of these a night on the hill on weekends. I get these players need to be held to a higher standard, but come on, they’re 20 yr old kids. Id suspend ewing 2 games and it’s over

word

Let me lay it down for you:
Vince got drunk and acted the fool. Some dude who was hired for “security” got muscled up and assisted by a pledge by shuttling him out. vince took offense and punched the security guard. Hansen intervened trying to mitigate the mess. He pushes the security guard and sends Ewing away.

I’ve done security work. Getting thrown at is part of the job. Take it or leave it. It sucks, but you should expect it as security. Laying criminal charges is absurd. Dude, handle your job- you got the guy out. the end. That’s your job. If you can’t take it, then you’re terrible at security.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head here...

CU’s frats are a bunch of douches, sorry to all of you who were in one, but they suck ass now. I assure you that the frat boys probably either ganged up on the ball players, or were equally involved, but since the party was on their turf, they turn up as the good guys calling the cops. Exact same thing that happened with the dude who was found dead after a sigma nu party like 3 years ago. I also remember a certain fire bomb incident last year, but thats a story for another day…

Seriously though what are these players thinking going to frat parties anyways? Thats where Riar and I want to say Kai Maiva got in their fisticuffs. Its just a bad situation; bunch of people, most drunk, and both parties roll deep just adding to their confidence. Just stay away guys, just stay away…

Is it just me

or does anybody else find it strange that no one other than the CU student paper has run this story? The media is normally all over stuff like this. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad and I agree with you guys that it sounds like a case of frat douche bag behavior and the “security guard” being a punk, but still I think it’s odd.
