Colorado Buffaloes Open as 17.0 Point Underdogs Against West Virginia
Just when I was breaking down scenarios of how the Buffs win this game, this nice 17 point gem comes through the wire.
Oklahoma Sooners open up as 6.5 point favorites over the Miami Hurricanes who's bubble was burst this past weekend by Virginia Tech. Loser of this game probably drifts into the abyss and I don't see the Sooners drifting away. I like the Sooners. I don't think Miami is a team that is built on leadership and I don't see them responding well after the Tech blowout.
Other early Big 12 lines:
Texas Tech (-38) vs. New Mexico - the Lobos will get the pay back for the Houston game.
Texas A&M (pick'em) vs. Arkansas - sort of interested in this game. A&M hasn't lost yet so this will be their first test of the year.
In other news around the Big 12, Baylor QB Robert Griffin has torn his ACL and will be out for the year. Tough news for one of the big playmakers in the Big 12.

Good god!
17 points??? We may be bad, but West Virginia is in the big east. No big east team should ever be favored in any football game. Do we not get any respect for beating them last year? Lines like that just make me hurt.

LOL, apparently someone watched our Toledo game
I am actually surprised WVU isn’t favored by at least 21, you normally get favored by at least 7 for being the home team provided it is considered and even matchup.

I thought if it opened +14 or more for the Buffs, I would take the points as well.
I’m just giving myself one more reason for my heart will be ripped out of my chest on Thursday, I suppose.

did you catch the Woelk article on buffzone? Basically comes down to we should except not being in the national picture because historically we haven’t been. I would be interested to hear your thoughts if you get a chance. Made me want to puke when I read it but I assume after the last few weeks he needs to do something to get back into Hawk’s inner circle.
Livid
I just got back from 650 miles in the car with my 5 and 2 year old, but reading this Woelk article pushed me over the top. I’m too tired to get into this tonight, but hope it will become a discussion point here.
This pisses me on a lot of levels…..
I can't speak for everyone
but I don’t think the expectation is for a top ten team year in and year out. But how about a top 50 team??? If he thinks what we have seen the last few years is acceptable by any standards than maybe its him who needs to make an adjustment.
agree, this was my initial thought on the subject...
no one here is expecting a top 10 team year in and year out. We understand that the Colorado Buffaloes are not in a recruiting hot bed and the facilities are not up to par, I get it, we all get it. Woelk is playing right along the party lines that this current administration is using. It is exactly what Mike Bohn and Dan Hawkins want him to say. Its all excuses and not enough “let’s get this sh*t done.” Do you think the University of Houston has Colorado money? Do you think Boise State has Colorado money, facilities and the great city that is Boulder? How about teams like Kansas, Utah, Missouri, BYU…all teams in our region who have similar to smaller athletic budgets as the University of Colorado but still get it done (don’t get me started on basketball either). Some people will say BYU, Boise State and Utah don’t play in the Big 12. Those three teams would wax us this year and it wouldn’t even be close. They also play in BCS bowl games and win conference championships. Common denominator in all three of those teams: great coaching, a good scheme that fits their players and in most cases, a good quarterback. Finding a quarterback and a motivating, strong X and O’s coach will cure a ton of issues. No one is asking for Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, USC results year in and year out. We are all reasonable but the University of Colorado can be a top 25 program and their is no excuse.
We need a coach and an athletic director who will preach that this sort of play, this sort of inept attitude is not acceptable and the excuses are not valid anymore. Until that time, people will find excuses like Woelk did. Yes, Woelk’s points are valid but we need a coach to say Neill Woelk is wrong. You either look at all the negatives, which there are plenty, but there are a ton of positives to this program as well. It is just like Dan Hawkins mentioning that Gary Barnett’s 2003, 2004, 2005 classes hardly were here when he came in. Well, 12 of your players coach Hawkins in 2007 aren’t on the team anymore. Three of your players in 2009’s class didn’t make it this year already. More excuses all over the place.
The excuses need to end and we need to find people who push the positives and who’s main goal is to win football games…I am starting to believe more and more that winning isn’t the main goal right now.

long story short, my response to Neill Woelk and his tempering our expectations story:
Is 7 or 8 wins too much to expect because most of us would have take that in a heart beat to start the year. That was 7 or 8 wins, not 10. Maybe he should have talked to Dan Hawkins about tempering expectations.
The Buffs should be 3 – 0. Is that too much to expect against no BCS teams? Buff fans are not unreasonable, they aren’t bad people like Dan Hawkins makes us out to be. We wanted 7 – 8 wins this year. That isn’t too much to expect. We wanted a bowl win. 50+ teams get into bowl games. Is that too much to ask?
No Buff fan has said Big 12 championship or bust.
I think Neill struggles to find stuff to write about sometimes and he waffles between being a fan and being an objective writer. I think he is bummed that the Buffs have struggled this year but a week ago, he said the Buffs performance was unacceptable. So he is playing both sides of the fence pretty well.

I just don't get it.
Growing up on the east coast the only reason CU even entered my mind as a possible college choice was seeing Boulder and CU on national TV almost weekly. using the football team as a marketing tool seems like a no brainer. Once you get kids to boulder its a no brainer. I have traveled enough to know that places like Columbia, Lawrence, Manhattan, Lincoln, Waco, Lubbock, SLC, Boise, Tulsa and on and on don’t hold a candle to Boulder as far as quality of life.
Isn’t it Bohn’s job to push this idea on the school? If not him than who? As you said above, I don’t need to win every game, but I do need to hear that we expect to win every game. When Hawk called for 10 wins and no excuses nobody was happier than I was, but watching him back off of that statement with excuse after excuse makes me sick. I want to feel like the commitment to excellence is there and unfortunately its beyond obvious that at this point it isn’t.
too many no brainers in there....
maybe its just that obvious?
He does bring up one point that I agree with...
Sellouts. It does piss me off that even when we having success, we never seem to be able to put people in the stands. I’ve never been able to figure out why even with a small stadium and a high alumni base it just doesn’t happen. Why does a team like aTm always sell out 90K plus when they have a consistantly weak team and is in the middle of nowhere? Because they have tradition, pride in their team, and its a blast to go to games there.
Maybe there are just too many Boulderites, alumni that would rather protest the injustice de jour than enjoy all that college football, friends, and a general good time has to offer.
Another knock on the job Bohn is doing
A couple of things.
I think the school has done a good job of sucking the enjoyment out of the games. Whether its the mediocre team on the field or stupid things like banning the halftime marshmallows in the student section. The Friday night Pearl street walk is great but I think the school can do a lot more. Hell, their are “defend the fort” billboards all over downtown Denver and I have yet to see anything besides a few 3 or 4 year old lamp post banners on 20th street for the buffs.
Additionally Colorado has an unusually high % of people moving in from out of state so the longstanding alumni roots aren’t here. For example in PA something like 1 of every 6 adults has spent time in the Penn State system so the local alumni base is outstanding. Its one of the downsides of CU taking in 40%+ of out of state students, a lot of them end up moving back out of state after graduation.
I'm sure no one cares
but here comes more pointless attendance analysis… Like you said, having tons of out of state alumni is a big issue, as are the local pro teams (as everybody knows). Take a typical home game (not including fans of the visiting team), I would venture a guess that 98% or more of the fans in the stadium are either students, alumni, or Boulder residents. Now take Texas for example. Obviously I don’t have the numbers but I would guess that 30 or 40% of the people in the stands are NOT students, alumni, or residents of Austin, but just “people from Texas who are fans of the longhorns.”
There aren’t people like that here. Kids growing up in Aurora for example who have parents with no connections to CU aren’t raised as CU fans. It just doesn’t happen. I lived in Boulder the first 23 years of my life but since leaving I hardly ever meet anyone or know anyone at work who is a die-hard CU fan but NOT a graduate of the school.
This is the only reason I'd be interested in having Logan as the head coach
I think he could significantly boost local interest in CU football amongst non-alumni/students and improve attendance, but of course if the team didn’t perform on the field that interest would quickly die down. And I’m not sure he’s the right guy from that standpoint.

it is true, we'll never be like NU, OU, or UT in this area
but I’ve never really thought that we’re as bad as everybody thinks either. I’ve been to about 50 CU games in my life and I don’t think there have ever been less than 40k in the stadium (not official numbers, actual bodies in the seats). Like Woelk says the Broncos are #1 and always will be but if we have a competitive team the students and the fans will be there and it will be loud.
I find it interesting looking at attendance numbers. Look at OSU, they have one of the best teams in their school’s history and they haven’t come close to selling out this year. I guarantee when Georgia comes to our place next year it will be packed (and we certainly won’t be ranked in the top 10 like OSU was). I know A&M has a huge stadium but they haven’t come close to selling out this year either. Miami hosts GT in a nationally televised battle of two top 20 teams and they get 45k in a 76k seat stadium. Anybody see the USC game yesterday? I don’t care what the box score says, there were probably 60k empty seats. I’m just saying, CU fan support isn’t THAT bad and it is total B.S. to say that it somehow prevents us from being a successful program (that isn’t intended at you, but Woelk’s column).
yep, the attendance thing is very much not a true indicator
even Texas has been criticized for not selling out games and having a weak home crowd that is quiet.
This is the most important thing in your post though:
but if we have a competitive team the students and the fans will be there and it will be loud.
The Ralphie Report - Go Buffs!...All Colorado Buffaloes on SBNation - http://www.ralphiereport.com/
Well, IMO, the biggest reason you don't see sellouts is that most of the
other places that is all there is to do, there is nothing else to do in Nebraska, Boise, etc.. than go to the game. Boulder is close enough to Denver that there are other entertainment options for people, and unfortunately for CU, people in Denver see it as a pain to drive up there to see a game, which is why I think you see the CU-CSU game always sell out in Denver. But look at USC and UCLA, they have a hard time selling out with schools in a larger metropolitian area, but again offer more entertainment options. USC sell out now because they are seen as a hot ticket, but prior to Pete Carrol they had a hard time even without having to compete with the NFL.

I think the "there is more to do" idea is slightly mistating it
I think the reason USC and UCLA traditionally have trouble selling out is not that there is so much to do in LA, but that the schools have done a poor job of building a local identity around the school. Austin and Columbus are large cities with most of the attractions that come with large cities, but they have been able to build a local identity that means that when you think of Austin, you probably think of the University of Texas. Perhaps the fact that Boulder and CU don’t seem to get along very well make that harder than it would otherwise be. Perhaps it would help if Boulder and Denver weren’t so tied together in most people’s minds, because Denver will never be associated with CU like it is with the Broncos.
Damn
We got some hate on my UM Canes from the ralphie boys….
How many of you watched the game which you had to online or just see the boxscore?
Mark it down for UM to cover at the minimum, if Bradford is out, UM will win.
Jacory is the leader that has brought back the U to the ACC relevance this yr and NC relevance next yr.
The Buffs……well lets just say thats one reason I’m a UM fan, to have a team that will have a NC shot in the next 3-4 yrs. I had such high hopes for this team, but after those first 2 games, I’m not sure if Hawk can ever win me back..
I had a little money on Miami
so that might be my problem! I hope Jacory Harris proves me wrong, he really impressed me in the first few weeks of the year.
We will see how Miami responds…they have a chance to show resilience this week.
In the past few years, this is a game Miami would lose big.

nah man don't worry
Unfortunately this team has lost me for this yr no matter what happens unless they start to win in the b12, so I’m almost following UM more at this pt.
Hope I don’t offend anyone with any comments, love to talk UM with you guys, all the UM boards there are no normal guys either FIRE SHANNON every other post or that he is god.
OU's D-line is better than Va Tech's.
Harris is going to have very little time. Can’t wait to go to that game.

I watched the whole game on espn360
because I had a bet on Miami too (damnit!). They didn’t look so good. But they looked impressive their first two games and Va Tech looked lame against NU, hence my bet. Who knows… My prediction is either OU will cover easily or Miami will win :-)

Love the prediction
Well you all will get to watch, Saturday night at 8 est nationally on ABC. If the weather is dry I give UM a great shot to make up for it.
Unfortunately I’m a moron and made a commitment to go up to Craig Colorado for a volunteer community project this weekend because i thought it was the UM/Florida A&M week not the sooners week.
I’m glad ill get to see the CU game but I’ll be back Tuesday on here to talk some trash about my canes if CU loses like I expect them to.
its all good guys, im just so depressed about our program right now
I have kinda taken Miami at 1A.
If that field is dry, NO doubt in my mind that UM wins 8/10. They are a high flying passing attack that ran into the perfect storm.
1. They practice at 5:30 in the morning so they didn’t have to cancel practice due to lightning so they hadn’t faced that weather. VT is a grind out power team which that weather played perfectly into.
2. Their ST sucks, I have been calling for their ST/TE coach’s head for a while now
3. I truly believe Jacory will win a NC at Miami either next yr or if he stays in Jan 2012
I really want to see how they bounce back as many people have pointed out their coach has a tendency in playing experience over talent. Lots of favoritism on D where the inexperienced guys aren’t playing. Anyone know where I have also heard this???
BEWARE

I am tempted to take WV. I mean if my team is gonna suck I might as well make some money off of it.
I will probably take WV in the first half -8. I feel like I’m selling my soul to the devil…
Where's the Spark?
Come on, where’s the fire. I came all the over here just to poke the coals, stir the embers and after one comment I’ve already got one “fan” jumping ship. Says alot……..
I heard we're wearing Auburn jerseys for the game Thursday.
Apparently Jarrett Brown can’t tell them apart from his own team.

what's the over/ under on anything good happening in west Virginia?
Randy Moss is from West Virginia. People in West Virginia right now are passed out on a porch somewhere next to a brown jug with XXX on the side while the latest killed possum roasts over a tire fire.
