Why oh why did we change our schedule

If by some miracle we pull off WVU and end up doing decent in our North (trying to put all my views aside), we may come back to changing the scheduling definetly costing us a win.

Miami(OH) is currently 0-3 and has made ESPN's Bottom 10 at #2 right behind the mighty and powerful Western Kentucky.

Imagine if we didn't have the face the powerhouse that is Toledo (lost 38-0 to OSU) and could have faced Miami.  They didn't score a point until this last game

Their schedule

9/05 Kentucky 0-1 (0-0) L 42-0
9/12 @ No. 12 Boise State 0-2 (0-0) L 48-0
9/19 @ Western Michigan 0-3 (0-1) L 48-26

I think even BabyHawk could have put 27 on these guys, and maybe our D could have held them to 24.  I don't really care what happens the rest of this year unless the mood really starts to turn from some of the other guys.  I won't be able to see many games at all the rest of the way with me working Sat afternoons but that Toledo loss will stick with me for a long while about Hawks future.

This season would be completely different even with how bad we showed up for CSU, if we were 2-1 coming off a dominate game going to WVU.

Schedule

I wonder if it’s time to change our scheduling philosophy somewhat. I’m all for watching us play teams like Florida State, West Virginia & Georgia. I don’t want to go the way of K-State either, but we need to start scheduling a few more wins until our program is at a level where we can compete against these big boys. I thought this year was a great non-conference schedule for us to get off to a fast start only to shoot ourselves in the foot. Next year, we’re looking at Cal and Georgia on the non-conf schedule and may be two losses if we don’t make progress. Maybe going against teams like Nevada would be something to look at.

we can't afford it

Schools like Florida and Texas can schedule scrubs because they’ll still sell there 100k tickets and rake in huge profits. We can’t sell out anything but Nebraska. And tomato cans come for free. It takes a generous guarantee to get a crappy team to come to Boulder (because that’s how those schools fund their programs). It’s maybe 50/50 that those kinds of games break even at CU.

good points

I agree with what you’re saying, but we have gotten those schools in recent years with Montana State and Eastern Washington. We can’t go cream puff after cream puff because of money, and essentially paying a hefty sum for a win (and history shows that it isn’t a guarantee anyway, see Montana State), but why not look at a more creative way to schedule, such as agreeing to a 2 for 1, meaning we get you guys twice at home and you get us once in your place? A team like a Nevada, New Mexico State or a Tulsa may jump at the chance to host a BCS conference.

I'm all for it

If we can work up an economically viable solution. I’m the world’s biggest proponent of the annual CSU game, and I would be in favor of more games against Wyoming, Air Force, and Northern Colorado if it meant more asses in the seats.

But history shows that we need more ways to get CU fans to come to the games, period. And we don’t travel well. Even the ASU game a couple of years ago was only 2/3 full. If we can’t ell our fans on extremely dumb bleach blonds in jean skirts, then what can we sell them on? Cheap gambling in Reno? Whatever the hell there is to do in Tulsa?

It looked like Toledo didn’t sell out the game. Apparently, we are not a draw the same way no one is a draw in Boulder. That makes it terribly difficult to schedule mid-major games, because there is no incentive for either program.

I was at the Toledo game

The CU turnout was pathetic. I felt like I was at a high school game on a Friday night. Then again, that might have been because of the caliber of play. :)
