Thursday Buff Bites - Coach Jeff Bzdelik Interviews With the Minnesota Timberwolves

Colorado_mediumRocky Mountain Independent " CU coach Bzdelik interviews for T-wolves job
This just in, CU basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik has confirmed that he interviewed with the Minnesota Timberwolves about their open Head Coaching position. I wouldn't be too worried about him going anywhere just yet but it is a little unsettling.

Colorado_mediumWoelk: CU no stranger to cost-cutting measures : Boulder Daily Camera
The University of Colorado certainly isn't immune to our current economic climate. A look at some of the cost saving measures being taken:

Reduced media guide costs by the sports information department.

Eliminated some unneeded telephone land lines, and instituted cell phone efficiency guidelines.

Reduced marketing costs by bartering for some advertising and other marketing items.

Reduced size of travel parties.

Capped hotel costs, lowered per diems for meals and lowered rental car allowances.

Made sure that virtually every room on road trips will be double occupancy.

Taken advantage of lower costs for off-peak air travel times.

Undertaken review of existing staff levels, with the possibility of reduction.

Colorado_mediumGo Mountain West, young Buffs
Read the whole article BEFORE you freak out like I did. But if (and only if) the Mountain West became a BCS conference would the Buffs be better suited there? I don't think so but it's an interesting thought to ponder.

Colorado_mediumBuff Moyd impresses in switch from RB to WR : Boulder Daily Camera
Hearing about Wide Receiver success is some of the best possible news I could get right now. Let' s hope that we here more and more once fall practice begins.

"Kevin Moyd has been doing real good since he switched to receiver from running back," Hansen said. "He's made a lot of progress. He's been making catches, running good routes. He looks like he's been doing it for a couple years now." Moyd moved to wide receiver during spring practices after spending his first four years in the program as a running back. The team needed help at wide receiver where only three scholarship players were available during the spring, so Moyd and fellow running back Corey Nabors began practicing there.

Colorado_mediumSome other great Big 12 moments that almost made my list - Big 12 - ESPN
Tim Griffin has listed (in no apparent order) his Big 12 moments that didn't make the cut. Here are the ones that involve the Buffs:

7. Colorado fans littering the field with debris in 2005 as the Buffaloes were blown out at home by Nebraska, 30-3.

8. Mason Crosby's four field goals, including a school-record 60-yarder and another from 54 yards that provided the margin in a 19-14 victory over Iowa State in 2004.

16. The "Saturday Night Massacre" after Frank Solich is fired in 2003 after the Cornhuskers' 31-22 victory over Colorado the previous day. 21. Colorado's late comeback to beat Wyoming 20-19 in 1998, featuring a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Ben Kelly late in the fourth quarter and Jeremy Aldrich's game-winning field goal with 3 seconds left.

Colorado_mediumB.G. Brooks Joining CUBuffs.com - CUBuffs.com
Former Rocky Mountain News writer B.G. Brooks is going to work for CUBuffs.com.

Brooks, 62, had covered the CU athletics scene since 1987, most notably football and men’s and women’s basketball. He wrote thousands of stories until the paper went out of business this past April, leaving over 200 employees scrambling for new employment. He has now found a home with the school he reported on for over two decades.

Colorado_mediumQ&A with Kansas Jayhawks quarterback Todd Reesing - ESPN
Bruce Feldman has a quick interview with Kansas Quarterback Todd Reesing. Not gonna lie, I really like Reesing.

The MWC article makes me want to puke

Have we fallen that far? A national championship in 1990, big 12 champs in 2001?? And now we should be getting psyched up to play CSU on rivalry weekend? A game in which the Buffs win 75% of the time already?

While I think it would be great to schedule some early season games against a BYU, Utah or TCU, no matter how he spins it suggesting we join the MWC is an insult to the program. I’m not sure what I’m more upset with the article or some of the comments? Suggesting we would be a mid tier team in the MWC? I hope we drop 50 on both CSU and WY this year.

I will give him credit, some of the facilities do need a major upgrade, but joining the MWC isn’t going to do it., and what good are they if it means joining a lesser conference anyway.

Agree 100%

Plus, while the Big 12 can’t compete with the Big 10 or Pac 10 in terms of television markets, the Mountain West would be a BIG step down.

Knudson nonsense

This is nothing new from Knudson, he has been pushing this for years, dating back to his early days with KFAN and its predecessors. He is a jealous lamb alum/fan and is trying desperately to establish CSU parity with CU. Given that, is it credible that he is actually looking out for CU’s athletic interests? I think not. He is simply gold-and-green with envy that CU has a long afffiliation with the upper eschelons of college football. CSU can’t achieve parity with CU on the field or in the budget area and Knudson knows it.
MWC likely won’t achieve BCS automatic qual status with the current formula, despite adding TCU to the conference for that specific purpose. The only reason this is an issue is the fall of the CU program during the Barnett years – his fault or not. Hawk is turning things around so domination of the series should quell Knudson. However, it is disturbing that CSU has a better indoor facility – financed through bonds in partnership with the city of FC. CU supporters need to get off their collective a**. Further, it is disturbing that we play CSU more often than we play OU, UT, OSU, does that bother anyone else?

The same thing happened with Bzdelik last offseason...

their was talks of him going to Chicago, we will see but it doesn’t sound like the formalist of interviews.

I sure hope it isnt that serious

If BZ jumps ship, and with no basketball center, i think we would be able to pretty much call it a day for the next 5 years for CU basketball. That would be pretty poor. Dont leave us Bzdelik

I'm not so sure

I think it may be a good thing if CU may want to look at getting Larry Brown to replace him. It is something that has been discussed previously, but I think if you could give Larry a place where he can coach kids and be the undisputed king, and he loves Colorado, I think you could put CU basketball back on the map in three years. Tons of kids would want to come here to get to play and learn from Larry Brown.

Larry Brown would be sweet

but would he really want to come here? I have a hard time believing that any big name coach would take on a program with not a lot of history, and sadly not the greatest fan base there is. That being said can i throw bob knights name into the ring? I mean, he wont do it, but we would sell seats…

If you don't mind...

…being on probation when he leaves, he’d probably be a great coach.

I'm by knows means a real CU basketball fan, or any basketball fan...

On one hand I’m impressed we have a coach that is getting these kinds of interviews, on the other what exactly has he done to deserve them?

by NYCskibum on Jul 16, 2009 6:14 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you can say that about half of the recycled NBA coaches

in the league…they just keep churning out the same coaches. I would be shocked if Bzdelik saw the value of going to Minnesota. That team is so young, he would probably be out in three years. Good young core but very young.

he could make as much money in those 3 years as he would in 6 here

And, based on the way we’ve been playing, it’s not exactly like he’d be jumping from North Carolina. He’ll be lucky if he lasts 3 years here

but...

after 3 years in MN he would probably never coach again, anywhere for that matter

by NYCskibum on Jul 17, 2009 1:07 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I am not surprised he is looking

But I think Minnesota would be hard pressed to hire him, he really rubs NBA players the wrong way and he may be a good teacher of the game, but I think that he has a hard time connecting to NBA guys, so I doubt he would be the long term answer in Minnesota. But I agree, money wise, he would make a lot more there.

Griffin's list overall...

…isn’t bad, but I just can’t get over how he can rank UT’s 2005 national title No. 1 while ranking OU’s 2000 national title…No. 47? Not disagreeing with the ranking for UT 2005, but that seems awfully low for the only other outright national title in Big 12 history.

Especially when OU was bigger underdogs than UT was

and they held a very good offense to 0 points.

I'm guessing it's because he's ranking the "moments"

The ending of the Rose Bowl is what makes it such an amazing moment. I don’t remember what the best moment of the OU game would be (although it would probably be the national championship crowning).

move to the MWC?

That is just plain stupid. Yes, the Mountain West has had a couple of good years & teams but these things are cyclical and soon they will be back among the mid major confreneces. Right now the Big Ten is down and the SEC is up, but in a couple of years things will reverse – it always happens. The Big East I’m not so sure about though…
If CU were to go to any new conference it should be the Pac-10. I’d actually welcome that move b/c I think we would fit much better in that conference (plus better places to visit) and the only problem I can see is that we don’t have enough sports that match.

Mark Knudson

Is a raging ram-loving idiot. That column sucked. It was so obvious that he hates CU, there was no way I could take his thoughts seriously. What a joke.
