University of Colorado Football Release - Devin Head, Josh Smith and Ryan Wallace Will Not Return to the Team
More to come on it but I thought I would get it out there first.
G Devin Head won't return to the team along with WR Josh Smith and TE Ryan Wallace. Head started games the past two years for the Buffs on the offensive line. Head was going to be the only senior on the offensive line. He was deemed academically ineligible.
Devin Head was currently listed as the backup left guard on the depth chart behind Ethan Adkins. Guard competition this spring did not include Blake Behrens, Max Tuioti-Mariner and Shawn Daniels due to injury. Sione Tau also fits in to the mix at guard, a position the Buffs should be fine at. It is safe to say four spots on the line are filled and this guard position is the only truly open, with plenty of guys ready to fill it.
Hawkins also announced several roster moves, as seven players won’t return this fall to the team for assorted reasons. Two are lettermen, senior offensive guard Devin Head and junior wide receiver/return specialist Josh Smith. Head, who played in 27 career games with 17 starts, is academically ineligible, with Smith is looking to transfer, likely to a school in California, where he told Hawkins he could work on furthering both his music (singing and production) and football careers. Smith set CU records for kickoff returns (50) and yards (1,286) and caught 52 passes for 838 yards (16.1 per) and three touchdowns in two seasons.
Redshirt freshman tight end Ryan Wallace sought his release to transfer closer to his Bowling Green, Ky., home, with sophomore Lynn Katoa likely to transfer to a junior college. Three walk-ons also won’t be back, junior fullback Matt Burgner, freshman wide receiver Marion Brown and junior offensive lineman Evan Eastburn.

OK, we can live with it
Devin Head is academically ineligible-gone…. I wonder how this will effect our academic (I forget the 3-letter accronym) requirements, I don’t imagine it does it any good…. How do you get to be a 5th year Sr and then become academically ineligible?
Bob Foster- sounds like a good coach and good person. I’m scratching my head on bringing him in for 1 year???

Hmm
Reading his bio, he doesn’t sound like a guy who would have academic problems…
“He owned a 3.2 grade point average as a prep in earning scholar-athlete honors. He lettered in academics several times and was on the honor roll all four years in high school. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America until he was 18, as he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He grows his hair out so he can donate it to "Locks For Love," a program to provide wigs for those undergoing chemotherapy. He does it in honor of Donna Logan, the wife of his high school coach, who died of breast cancer in the summer of 2007.
Good luck Devin…
All the news lately is still better than the Freshman CB for FL who got tased by the police this weekend….

I'm pretty sure he was in the car with
Ethan Adkins when Adkins got popped for a DUI last year, so though he may be a smart cat, he might not have great judgment all the time, which may translate to class.
Well thats not as bad as i would have hoped, Its nice to have depth on the line, but i dont think that he will be that huge of a hit.

Not sure if I expected better or worse
Regardless, this leaves me scratching my head.

I am much more disappointed in hearing about Smith than I am about Head
Both are good players, both have starting roles on this team but in regards to Head, he is part of a unit that is deep at offensive line. What hurts most about Head is he was a senior, had experience and may have been a solidifying guy in the locker room. He was also a Gary Barnett recruit, not to speculate but that may mean something. I sure hope he graduates and doesn’t waste it all.
As for Smith, different story. He is a playmaker and is part of a unit that is thin. Regardless of his wide receiver production in years past, he was a best playmaker and figured to be a key role on this team if the Buffs were going to make the jump in 2009. Not saying the Buffs won’t win without Smith but his maturation and growth would have helped immensely.

good grief
what the hell is going on over here?
Was talking to a friend today who reads CN – what I told him about Smith was – “They run play-action, and he’s that guy you just throw the ball up in the air to – and he runs under it, gets it, and he’s gone.”
Big loss.

Markques Simas will be that guy now who is the deep route player but I agree
you don’t lose almost 2,000 yards of all purpose yards and feel good about it. We have one receiver who has caught a pass ever in Division One football. Not the best feeling right now.

Really sorry to see Josh Smith leaving—here’s a guy who literally gave his nuts for the team in game action.. As other Buff fans have noted—you win with playmakers, something CU has sorely lacked in recent years.
