March madness/brackets/betting open thread??

I know this unfortunately has nothing to do with CU sports, but since this is the only sports blog I visit and I know a lot of you are following the tournament closely and like to place some bets I thoght maybe we could have an open thread discussing the tournament.

Maybe I'm posting this because I'm feeling so hot!  I bet on all 8 games today and I'm 6 for 6 so far, wish I would of parlayed!  Anyway, while I felt pretty good about today's games I don't see any games tomorrow I really love.  Anyone got any hot tips?

I think I like Mizzou -4 and Syracuse -2 tomorrow.  Maybe MSU -4 against USC as well.  Someone is bound to bring USC back to earth eventually, 4 points isn't that many...

Nice,

I went 8 – 8 yesterday in my pool with the big win being Purdue over Washington. All the rest I felt were locks.

That Gonzaga game was tight. It has been a good tournament if you only watched the late games. That Siena game was awesome as well.

Today, I need Kansas to lose and Wisconsin to win. I had FSU and West Virginia in the sweet sixteen but my other fourteen teams are still alive.

I personally like Cleveland State over Arizona today. Woodrow will tell you different because he is a closet Arizona lover but I am not impressed one big by Arizona (-3). I agree on Missouri. I think they will run Marquette out of the gym and I also like Pitt to respond like Memphis did yesterday.

Michigan State intrigues me as well as a team that should be 4 points better than USC but USC may just be athletic enough to stick with them

so much for my basketball knowledge

It looked good with about 7 minutes left. Now Pitt is in a fight and Arizona is pulling away

I was disappointed with the USC/ MSU line

I took USC anyway, but I thought it would be bigger. I’ve got Missouri as well.

Side note- did you guys see Purdue’s black uniforms? They looked great (except for the collar). Black letters on a black background with the lettering outlined in gold, and gold piping on the sides. My first thought was that they kind of looked like the guys from Tron, especially on the guys in tight undershirts with gold piping. I’d love to see us go with that style.

by Hallux Valgus on Mar 22, 2009 3:12 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I thought those looked cool as well

When I first turned on the game at first glance I thought Washington were the ones in the black. I think I’ve seen them wear all blacks too with black lettering surrounded by purple. Maybe not though…

Good stuff everybody

make sure you all post some more stuff before next round.

Of course I jinxed myself yesterday after my great start. I had Duke and Gonzaga and neither covered so there went my perfect day. At least the Gonzaga game was really exciting and Duke (a team I really like) beat Texas (a team I really hate), so it’s not all bad.

I’m perfect so far again today, I had Syracuse, KU, Arizona, and Xavier (Pitt was a push). Speaking of that, I’ve had 3 pushes so far (Also KU/ND-State and Duke/Binghampton), the odds makers are doing a good job I guess, I don’t remember ever having a push bet before this tournament… I’ve got Louisville, MSU, and Mizzou right now (looking OK, but again, probably just jinxed myself).

One thing, I find myself betting on the favorite about 90% of the time, those games always stick out to me when I’m picking games to bet on. I guess that’s just how my brain works, I think “oh, this team will win by more than that” not “I think this team will LOSE, but not by that much”. That’s too complicated :-) Well, good luck to everybody.

I think that's true for a lot of people

One bit of wisdom that I’ve gleaned from years of betting is: never ever bet on an underdog that you don’t think can win outright. That mantra has served me well, especially on college football. Right now, USC (+4) is down 2 despite not playing very well, so that’s okay. I had the line pegged at 6, so if MSU wins by 5, I’m gonna be pissed.

Also, never bet on a team of which you are a fan, but that isn’t really a problem for CU fans right now. Sad panda.

by Hallux Valgus on Mar 22, 2009 4:48 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh man, thats rough for you

I feel really lucky to of gotten that one, and REALLY lucky even to get the push with Mizzou. Man, Louisville hasn’t looked very strong, I’m done betting on them to cover large spreads.

by nebraskasux on Mar 22, 2009 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay, SWEET 16 TIME!

Good matchups. Maybe I’m just being a Big 12 homer but I really like OU -1 and I said to myself before the lines came out “I bet Michigan State is favored by 1 or 2 and if they are I’m taking Kansas” and sure enough they’re favored by 2 so I like KU +2. No offense to you buffzag, but I think UNC is gonna be way too much for your Zags, I like them -8.5. I also think UConn will handle Purdue, I like them -7. Although I probably won’t bet on this game as I can’t bet against Duke, if I was totally unbiased I would take Nova +2. Although I said Louisville had screwed me for the last time on my previous post I’m thinking they HAVE to play a good game at some point and Arizona shouldn’t have anywhere near the talent, right? I hate to do it but I’ll probably take Louisville -9.

So, what about the other games? Anybody got some good feelings on Pitt/Xav or Mizzou/Mem? I’m not sure what to think on those. Wow, this tournament has turned me into a complete gambling fiend.

by nebraskasux on Mar 24, 2009 6:07 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I really like Nova.

It’s hard for me to pick a lot of these games because I am so vested in all of them. Between allegiances (everyone knows I’m an OU homer and my bro goes to Zona) and my bracket (I have the Zags and Nova in the final four) I don’t feel like I can make any unbiased predictions.

Nova was my big sleeper in this tournament

That being said, I don’t see them making it past the Elite Eight.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on Mar 25, 2009 3:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

VILLANOVA!

I have them in the Final Four, but this tournament has proven that I know eff all about college b-ball, so take it with a grain of salt.

Fun fact- former top recruit Taylor King (Mater Dei of Santa Ana, CA) started at Duke but has since transferred to Nova. He is sitting out this year per NCAA rules.

by Hallux Valgus on Mar 26, 2009 8:10 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, everybody loves Nova

I’m proud of myself that I just left that game alone. In the past I would of bet on Duke even if I didn’t think it was a good bet :-)

Frick

Missouri is putting it on Memphis…

yeah, I have memphis too

also got the over, so hopefully I’ll break even on that game at least. Shoulda taken the under on the Duke/Nova game, I thought that was a good bet but for some reason I didn’t pull the trigger.

Speaking of Mizzou, I actually feel kind of good for them. No one really expected anything from them this year and they’ve had a great season.

by nebraskasux on Mar 26, 2009 9:19 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

definitely like their coach

and like their style…good for the Big 12 as well. If two of the big 12 teams could advance, it would be good for the conference.

I would love to know the ticket sales for the Arizona

games…I can never get a gauge on it but it certainly is sparse…I really want a regional final in Denver but feel that it will never happen because the size of the Pepsi Center might not be big enough. I have went to the last two opening rounds here and it is a blast…great basketball and not that expensive.

I don't think it will ever happen

Kroenke dumped the high school state championships in favor of the MWC tournament, and the CHSAA games got better attendance in Boulder than the MWC games got at Pepsi.

I was lucky enough to attend the Final Four at Mcnichols, and it was AMAZING. I’ve still got the SI about UNLV and DUKE and Loyola Marymount and the rest. It was one of the highlights of my sports life. I wish the NCAA would go back to playing basketball games in basketball arenas, but it’ll never happen.

by Hallux Valgus on Mar 26, 2009 9:21 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

it could maybe happen, sure would be sweet

ya think size is the only issue? Pespsi seats more than TD Banknorth and the FedEx Forum

by nebraskasux on Mar 26, 2009 9:26 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

no, I think attendance is the issue

Denver is a trek from most schools. I don’t think Kroenke will bid on it.

I'm in LA

and we’re getting Nova/ Duke. NCAAOD doesn’t work on my Mac.

by Hallux Valgus on Mar 26, 2009 9:23 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

we were getting the tiger game

but they just switched to Nova/Duke as the other one was getting a little out of hand

by nebraskasux on Mar 26, 2009 9:24 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's been a pretty great game

despite the score. Neither team can hit the three, so they’re both driving and running (Mostly Villanova). Those honkys from Duke can run!

My old man has Mizzou in the finals,

I laughed at him at the beginning. I am not laughing now

in my bracket I had mizzou going to the elite 8 but then losing to UConn

in fact, as I’m looking now my West region is still perfect (if Mizzou hangs on and wins). The other regions? Not so much…

I dislike UNC

so it would be nice to see the Zags knock them off, but since I bet on UNC that changes things a little… Go OU, KU, and Louisville!

money is good when it is this easy….now you can let the Zags win

yeah, I suppose I could do that as a personal favor to you and your brother

I’m sure that would make all the difference :-) but then I would need KU to win as well! That game is definitely lowest on my confidence list tonight.

by nebraskasux on Mar 27, 2009 7:12 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, Kansas killed what would be been an awesome 4 game parlay

they shoulda won that game, I’m pissed…

Anyway, sorry about Gonzaga guys, nothing to be ashamed of though, UNC is a damn good team. The Hansbrough/Griffin match-up is going to be awesome. They are two of the toughest and most talented college players that I can remeber.
