Markques Simas Poised to Break Out?

Since we can sometimes be a little hard on Tim Griffin when he is a little bit off on the CU program, we also need to give some credit when he hits the nail on the head. Simas breaking out next year is vital to the success of a program that is begging for some playmakers to emerge (or at least some consistency out of Josh Smith) and we all need to cross our fingers and hope that he can keep his academics in order from here on out.

What is everyone hearing and what do you think?  Is Markques going to be eligible next year and if so will he be one of our top two receivers?

I think our best bet with Simas...

is to assume he will be ineligible. I am cautiously optimistic that he will play this year, but I think it’s better to go into spring practice with a keen eye on the development of other WRs and our TEs. It was very concerning that a kid who was redshirting couldn’t keep the grades above a 2.0. How is he going to absorb the playcalling, film sessions, pressure etc. and do well in class when he’s the top WR on the team? I think he could be the best pure WR since the late 1990s (DJ Hackett amongst others was solid but unspectacular whereas I think Simas has Michael Westbrook-like, game-changing talent) but I’ll believe it when I see it this fall. Nice to see some positive press for CU on ESPN though……Interesting that nothing was said of DScott. I like him having a big year under the radar this year vs. under the microscope like last season.

Simas

might be murder on opposing secondaries. I have heard a lot of good things about how he has “rededicated himself” and totally eaten up the Hawkins “balance approach”. This much is certain…he has the ability to be the best WR in the North, and all of our WR’s will benefit from a running game (assuming that happens next year (I believe it will)).

Welcome to the site Johnny

I think he can really shape our WR rotation. If he is eligible I’m not sure we don’t have the best WR unit in the North…

thats a great avatar johnny

what is that? Osborne saying “don’t run my team over with Ralphie”?

but yeah, Simas better be eligable this year. I want a healthy, good grade having, not getting arrested-type team this year so we can have our best players on the field. Is that too much to ask??

yeah that is an awesome avitar. well done

I think your right his “redirection” I dont know when or where i heard this, but i remember hearing that hes killing it in school right now.

If he is eligible its going to be awesome. If Db’s have to worry about getting torch by not only j-fly, but simas, and potentially simmons, this thing is going to go off next year. Even with our QB situation im stoaked for our offense, its going to be explosive and lay the pain on people.

Can't wait.

I was so mad last fall watching him in fall practice and him not being able to go. He has a ton of talent. I agree with BuffFiend87 that you just have to hope he has matured because it won’t work once he has to juggle athletics and academics.

I have a hard time counting on anyone this flaky

I’ll say that we need him to be a top producer, but I sure won’t expect him to be until he at least steps on the field. This is his third year, and if he had been handling his business, Celestine had stuck with the program, and Smith didn’t have the shoulder issues, none of us would have been looking at WR as such an important spot during recruiting. This is Simas’s shot. If he doesn’t produce, he’ll probably be passed up by the new kids. IF he does, then bully for us.

In my opinion, this year determines whether we look back at his potential in one of two categories:
Blake Mackey/ Phil Savoy/ Patrick Williams
or
DJ Hackett/ Michael Westbrook/ Mike Pritchard.

It’s all on him. Time to sink or swim.

Confidence

I’m kind of suprised at some of the skeptacism on his academics. From all the reports I’ve heard/seen, he’s really turned things around this year academically. For his sake, I hope these reports are true and that he has matured a little.

I’m betting on his contribution to the WR’s this year and think it will be a night and day difference between last year and this in the WR’s

+1

Totally agree. From what I’ve heard he’s hitting the books and ready to contribute. I’m expecting/hoping to see him make big contributions on the field next year.

reports?

what reports have you seen that could possibly give insight into his grades in the spring semester?

by BuffaloSoldier on Feb 28, 2009 8:50 AM MST up reply actions

complete speculation

any comments offered here can only be speculation. The kid hasn’t done a thing since he has been here. He hasn’t contributed in the classroom or on the football field. No one here can know whether he will be elegible next fall, its February. And no one here can know whether or not he would be able to break into the starting rotation even if he were to be elegible. Sorry to sound negative but looking to him as a source of inspiration or hope is silly at this point. We should focus on returning contributors.

This article

Says that Simas is in fact going to class. In fact the whole article is really just Simas talking about how Hawk will not take crap anymore, like being ineligible. I think its pretty clear in the article that there is a greater push by Markques to be eligible and do the right thing.

As for his skill, like Irish has said he was killing it in practice, so we can just hope he isn’t another Aric “wide right” Goodman, awesome in practice, then unsavory on Saturdays.
