Possible head coaches and ADs
Sorry if something similar was already posted....
Seeing as a change at the top is inevitable (after this season or after next season) who do you think would be the ideal head coach and AD for Colorado?
Here's a list of the coaches that could be available:
2. Tommy Tuberville
3. Norm Chow
4. Dave Logan --radio personality/ HS head coach--
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Logan_%28American_football%29
5. Shawn Watson -- OC under Gary Barnett --
http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=224510
6. Gary Kubiak -- Houston Texans head coach
7. Charlie Strong -- Florida Defensive Coordinator-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Strong
8. Gus Malzahn -- Offensive Coordinator of Auburn
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gus_Malzahn
9. Eric Bieniemy
After researching these guys, it would be hard to argue with Gus Malzahn, Shawn Watson, or Tuberville.
With respect to ADs, I haven't heard of anything....does anyone know of possible candidates?

Kubiak?
I don’t think he would want to jump from NFL to a slumping College Football team. Of all them Strong would be my choice.

I don't know any off the top of my head, but whoever is running Utah would be a great canidate
I would also add Kyle Shanahan to that list (he is actually top on my list), I doubt Kubes would come, one he would have to be fired, and Texans are doing pretty well and two he is a native of Texas, so I think he would want to stay there in that area.

Shawn Watson!?!
I was mad enough about that old article on here that suggested he was a candidate. The guy bad-mouthed CU and he’s probably gonna be fired at NU after this season anyway. I demand you take him off the list! :-)
The whole Kubiak thing has long passed. He was talked about last time, but no chance any more.

Re: Watson
I didn’t hear that Watson bad mouthed CU, regardless what I heard, if he bad mouthed CU, that takes him out of the running…
I heard some one mention Gary Kubiak, so that’s why I threw him in the mix…I don’t think the Texans make the playoffs this year but I do think they get 9 or 10 wins…so Kubiak prolly stays in Texas.
Kyle Shanahan could be good, but I have a feeling that he wants to stay in the NFL.

Thoughts on Watson, etc
Regarding Watson, aside from the anemic Nebraska offense this year, I remember not liking the Watson offenses at Colorado. A little digging confirmed my recollection and shows why. When he was OC at CU from 2000 – 2005, here is how we ranked in total offense each of those years:
2000: 67th; 2001: 20th; 2002: 58th; 2003: 66th; 2004: 85th; 2005: 87th
So, no way to SW for CU HC.
I agree with the next guy who mentions Turner Gill. I also think Frank Solich could be good (he might relish the chance for revenge against Nebraska;)).
It’s going to be too expensive to replace Hawkins, and besides I think he deserves 1 more year. Not to say I’m happy with the state of the program. Some change is needed, but it is more likely to happen with the coordinators and / or position coaches. I think the OL coach has to go after taking what was supposed to be a better unit this year and going backwards.

Turner Gill anyone?
I think if were going to get a new coach it will have to be a guy like him, someone with huge upside whose done some, but not enough to warrant a massive salary. Im not 100% sure of the schools finaces, but im pretty sure were not gonna be able to pay 5+ of the people on that list the salaries that they would require to come here.

he was really sucessfull at boise state then things went wrong from him in asu. turner gill is a good choice and so is al golden of temple. 6 wins and counting at temple.

probably coaching pop warner somewhere in idaho
call me crazy, but I don’t see us hiring another boise state coach who has already failed somewhere else and was one of Dan’s mentors.

No, but there is one WAC coach that deserves a mention....
and that’s Pat Hill. He’s built a quality program that is competitive each and every year. And he’s doing it with a bunch of 2* recruits. His preseason schedule over the years shows that he can compete with the best teams in the country. A no nonsense football coach.

Gus Malzahn? Shawn Watson? Dave Logan?
To me Tubberville or Strong are really the two most legitimate ones on the list. Both coach / have coached in the talent rich SEC country and both have a fire in their belly to win. Malzahn came from Tulsa (and is still not yet proven), Shawn Watson doesn’t like the Buffs (and vice versa) and Dave Logan has no experience at the college level coaching. While Logan would bring “tradition” back to the program, “tradition” is not what we need – we need a hard nosed coach who can recruit from and have ties to TX, LA, MS, AL, GA, and FL.
Seriously, do ANY of you think Shanny wants to come back to the college level (where he has 10+ bosses over him)? I think after having it so good for so long with an owner like Bowlen and after having sucess in the NFL, he would never even consider coming to CU.
If we want to win, we have to spend money (money we may not have right now). We don’t need an up and comer, we don’t need another WAC coach and we don’t need a coach who only has recruiting ties to CA.
My vote’s for Tubberville

Even though I believe were stuck with Hawkins for 2010
Gary Patterson TCU….. Could he still recruit Texas as well here as back there? Probably not. But I bet he would get plenty of quality kids, not sure how well he would do recruiting else where.. He’s been a winner since taking over TCU not sure if he would be able to do it at Colorado. Only way to find out is hire him. He did turn down Minnesota to stay at TCU so he might not want to consider CU either.

I like him, but why would he leave
TCU is set up to be a player in the MWC conference and challenge for BCS at large bid every other year, in addition, I am guessing TCU being and old SWC school probably has a ton of money and could match anything CU can offer.

Patterson would come for the money
But I do not think CU will have the money to pay if they buy out Hawkins.
My guess is that Hawkins is back for at least one more year especially if CU manages to win a couple more down the stretch.
Keep Moving Forward.

I will throw another name in the mix
What about Rick Dennison, granted he has no ties to the program, but I think he will be a very good HC and he has a wealth of expereince, might be a cheap hire that gets good results like Tim Brewster at Minnasota.

why hasnt anyone said anything about promoting cabral?
hes been with the program since the national championship and has had many chances to be HC but turned it down elsewhere. why not promote him? hes gotta be big on tradition since hes been here so long. sounds like a good fit to me!

Would be a great hire, but I think he is holding out hope he will get a shot at ND
Also, while I think he has good connections in the midwest, not sure how that will translate to CU where you need to be able to get kids from CA and Texas to come here, most of the midwest kids generally saty close to home in the Big 12 or MAC, although we seem to have been somewhat successful in getting some Ohio kids recently.

If We Don't Have The Money For Tubberville
No one has mentioned Will Muschamp OR Major Applewhite.
While I’m not a fan of up and comer coaches, because it’s really a hit or miss deal, I think after Applewhite coaching for Alabama and Texas has the experience. Not to mention recruiting ties. I’ll state it again, I really think recruiting from the south is almost as important as hiring the right head coach. If Les Miles can produce winning seasons in the SEC, while barely breaking .500 while at OK State, that in itself is justification for trying to steal guys away from the south. Even in our heyday at CU we had a pipeline to the south (K. Stewart, S. Clavelle, ect ..). At some point we started recruiting less and less from the south and it’s hurt us in the long run.
by jwe1747 on Nov 9, 2009 8:31 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
never thought about major applewhite
according to wikipedia he is making 250k as the running backs coach at UT?
I don’t think Muschamp would leave as he is “head coach in waiting” and I’m not sure Tubberville would come this far west. Seems more likely he could hold out for the next ACC or SEC job
by NYCskibum on Nov 9, 2009 9:39 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Agree NYC
Muschamp is not going anywhere. I think I remember hearing that he is the highest paid assistant in CFB on a broadcast this year.
How about Jimbo Fisher? :-)
Keep Moving Forward.

Major or Muschamp would be huge
and it really doesn’t matter about Muschamp being the whole “head coach in waiting” thing. Mack isn’t leaving anytime soon. My only concern about either would be the fact that they both lack HC experience and it’s pretty much a guarantee that they would be looking to move back to Texas once Mack did retire, especially Major.
by mdk on Nov 9, 2009 1:14 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Muschamp has been guarenteed head coach of Texas when mack brown retires
so he’s not going anywhere

What about Venables from OU?
He’s got fire in his eyes and might want to take the next step. I know he would be persona non grata at OU for going to another Big 12 school, but we can presume he’d like a shot at being head honcho at a program with promise.

Many OU fans tend to think that he will be a better head coach than he is coordinator
He is a great recruiter as well.

Rumors around saying he is at the top of the list…… currently.

Any reason why
Stoops defense has gotten worse every year after his brother left for Arizona, I don’t see why Venables would be that goof of a fit, I rather we get someone that has some ties to the program or at least look at the Kyle Shanahan idea.

I wouldn't say it is incredible
Decent, but shut outs of Idaho State and Tulsa don’t impress me much. It just seems that it has been the defense that has let them down much of the past few years vesus previous years where it was the focus of the team and really how they won a lot of games (IMO), I know you follow OU much closer than I do.

Some other names
Harsin – OC at Boise St.
McCarney – DL coach at Florida, former HC at Iowa St.
Addazio – OC and Assistant HC at Florida
Gerry DiNardo – OC at Colorado during National Championship year. Former HC at Vandy, LSU, and Indiana. Last few years as HC were pretty bad, but before that had some good years at LSU (which had 6 straight losing seasons before he showed up). Also, he’s part of the Buff family.

There would be some potential there, for sure.
The guy has some terrific recruiting connections in Cali as well. The one thing you’d have to understand is that he’s about as East Tennessee as they come and Boulder is … not.

Sumlin - Houston HC
How about Kevin Sumlin, HC at University of Houston? He has ties to the Big 12 as he was OC at Oklahoma under Stoops, he’s young @ 45, he’s black, and he is not that highly paid, as coaches go. His 2009 salary is $700K, compared to $1.1M for Hawkins. Also, he is now coaching in non-BCS conference. Seems like it could be win-win. It’s only a matter of time until someone snaps him up.

There is a line of thought
That because so many of the skill position recruits are black that a black coach is better able to recruit these players. Not sure there is any truth in that at all. I think we can all agree that the best thing to help recruiting is winning games.

I am guessing he is hoping that Hawkins will somehow pull out a win at OKState and Nebraska, then he could say that the program is heading in the right direction and not get rid of his buddy, but I think he won’t do anything until he is forced, but I agree, they need to cut bait now and get someone in ASAP so that the recruits are kept on board.

I think he would consider it. It would be a lot easier for him to win in the Big12 North than sitting behind Texas and Oklahoma and even Okie State in the South. He put Texas Tech on the map so I can’t imagine they would ever let him go. He is already way out of our price range as it is.
